Tomeuntil Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Hello,I need your help- I got this error from the log. I think it's the main reason my torrents won't download. I have Windows XP SP1 and I didn't find a firewall when I checked. How do I fix the problem?Thx.
Ultima Posted December 13, 2007 Report Posted December 13, 2007 The error is entirely innocuous anyway. If you really need to get rid of it, disable the firewall integration option in µTorrent's Preferences > Connection, or upgrade to SP2.
anakin66 Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 I'm getting the same error with every torrent using Windows XP SP 2 on an intel based system (slightly different hexidecimal code). Utorrent is included in the windows firewall list of exceptions, and it is checked off to be added to the list of exceptions under options. Is this an indication of a problem. Again, it says it with every torrent in the logger entry.
anakin66 Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Yes, every single one. They all say: [17:29:34] Error opening Windows firewall:0x800706D9. I assume the numbers in the square brackets are the time the error occurred, and if so, the time is the same for each torrent running, and the error only ocurs once in the logger for each torrent. That being said, I have noticed this error before. I wonder if it happens when I first log on, or restart my system, and utorrent is being slowed down by AVG antivirus updates, or something like that.To be honest, since updating to version 1.7.7 of utorrent, my speeds have increased, so unless this indicates a problem (and I would think an error with my firewall would), it's just a matter of curiosity, more than a serious concern. Of course, if it does indicate a problem, and my speeds could be better, well that would be even better.
Ultima Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 I'm not understanding what you mean by the fact that it shows the error for every torrent. µTorrent only shows the error once per session when it fails to add the exception to Windows Firewall. It doesn't try to add a rule for each torrent you have loaded...If it happens on startup, then it's normal. µTorrent starts up too quickly -- faster than Windows Firewall did. Unless Windows Firewall is being a problem for you (in that it's blocking µTorrent), the error message is innocuous, and can be ignored.
anakin66 Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Well, that is the problem then. I checked again this morning, and the error occurs when my computer started. What I meant when I said that it appears for each torrent is that if I click on a torrent, then click the logger tab at the bottom of the window, the error appears regardless of which torrent I choose. As you say, if this is simply because utorrent starts faster than the firewall program, it's no big deal. It is strange that the message would be "error starting Windows firewall", since that makes it sound like utorrent is trying to start the firewall, when obviously the firewall is set to start on its own. Of course, by clicking the utorrent option to include utorrent in the list of Windows firewall exceptions, perhaps it does try to access Windows Firewall each time utorrent starts. I see said the grasshopper.Regardless that's just semantics. The main thing is it doesn't indicate a problem. Thanks for the explanation.
Ultima Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 It actually says "Error opening Windows Firewall", which is somewhat different µTorrent displays that error because it is having trouble opening some communication path with Windows Firewall to make sure that an exception was added. In that context, the error does make sense, since Windows Firewall hasn't yet started up (so it can't respond to any API calls)
anakin66 Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Yup, that makes sense. It also complicates first guy's question, giving him a new problem, namely that the error in the logger tab doesn't have anything to do with why his torrents won't download.
Clint_johnston Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 I've been getting the same error message. But the problem I've noticed has been a general slowdown of my torrents. They were going pretty fast, but now I'm getting the error message and my speed has gone to pot. It's going ok, but I would like super speed again. I'll try the advice you gave the first poster about adjusting my preferences.
