rofflwaffle Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 So here's the deal. I'm not running behind the nVidia firewall, no security programs running, no nero running. When I start utorrent, PC usage spikes to 100% and stays there until I can shut it down. It's not taking up too much ram, just the normal amount.Any ideas?PC is AMD 64 3500+ 1 gig of ram 1 80gb main hdd and one 750gb storage drive.Hijack this log.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 8:26:35 PM, on 12/13/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\AutoDetector\monitor.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exeC:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXEC:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\PnkBstrA.exeC:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\StarWind\StarWindService.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXEC:\Program Files\Xfire\Xfire.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Media Player Classic\mplayerc.exeC:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - jewelisheaven Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 Well barring these stupid EA "background" processes... indeed, you look clean. To get a little background, when did you start noticing this behaviour? Also have you changed any software recently? What I would like for you to do is download Process Explorer and paste the DLL list for your utorrent process in another post. site page and the default view for the lower pane is DLL mode (Ctrl-D)Any dlls linked into the process outside of the \system32 directory should not be there, in my experience. Is there a reason you mention "until i can shut it down"? Does the computer stop or slow down responding when uT uses 100% of the CPU? Generally uT starts in normal priority which means shell applications and Windows Task Manager would be un-affected by the usage spike.

Does the computer stop or slow down responding when uT uses 100% of the CPU? Generally uT starts in normal priority which means shell applications and Windows Task Manager would be un-affected by the usage spike.Indeed. uT starts, and remains, in normal priority. However, all normal and shell apps, including task manager, barely function. Let me grab a fresh copy of process explorer and post the results. Thanks for your help.Well, I can't make another post without the board telling me I'm double posting. So here's hoping you see this is updated. Here's what process explorer picked up on uTorrentProcess: utorrent.exe Pid: 4004Name Description Company Name VersionACTIVEDS.dll ADs Router Layer DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180adsldpc.dll ADs LDAP Provider C DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180ADVAPI32.dll Advanced Windows 32 Base API Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180ATL.DLL ATL Module for Windows XP (Unicode) Microsoft Corporation 3.05.2284.0000AVIFIL32.dll Microsoft AVI File support library Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180CLBCATQ.DLL Microsoft Corporation 2001.12.4414.0312COMCTL32.dll User Experience Controls Library Microsoft Corporation 6.00.2900.2982comdlg32.dll Common Dialogs DLL Microsoft Corporation 6.00.2900.2180COMRes.dll Microsoft Corporation 2001.12.4414.0258ctagent.dll ctagent Creative Technology Ltd 1.00.0000.0008ctype.nls DNSAPI.dll DNS Client API DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2938GDI32.dll GDI Client DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.3159hnetcfg.dll Home Networking Configuration Manager Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180IMM32.DLL Windows XP IMM32 API Client DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180Iphlpapi.dll IP Helper API Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2912kernel32.dll Windows NT BASE API Client DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.3119locale.nls mdnsNSP.dll Bonjour Namespace Provider Apple Computer, Inc. 1.00.0003.0001MPRAPI.dll Windows NT MP Router Administration DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180MSACM32.dll Microsoft ACM Audio Filter Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180MSCTF.dll MSCTF Server DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2809msctfime.ime Microsoft Text Frame Work Service IME Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180MSIMG32.dll GDIEXT Client DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180mslbui.dll LangageBar Add In Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180MSVCR71.DLL Microsoft® C Runtime Library Microsoft Corporation 7.10.3052.0004msvcrt.dll Windows NT CRT DLL Microsoft Corporation 7.00.2600.2180MSVFW32.dll Microsoft Video for Windows DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180mswsock.dll Microsoft Windows Sockets 2.0 Service Provider Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180NETAPI32.dll Net Win32 API DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2976ntdll.dll NT Layer DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180ole32.dll Microsoft OLE for Windows Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2948oleaut32.dll Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.3139rasadhlp.dll Remote Access AutoDial Helper Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2938RPCRT4.dll Remote Procedure Call Runtime Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.3173rtutils.dll Routing Utilities Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180SAMLIB.dll SAM Library DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180SETUPAPI.dll Windows Setup API Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2938SHELL32.dll Windows Shell Common Dll Microsoft Corporation 6.00.2900.3241SHLWAPI.dll Shell Light-weight Utility Library Microsoft Corporation 6.00.2900.3157sortkey.nls sorttbls.nls unicode.nls USER32.dll Windows XP USER API Client DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.3099utorrent.exe UxTheme.dll Microsoft UxTheme Library Microsoft Corporation 6.00.2900.2845VERSION.dll Version Checking and File Installation Libraries Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180WINMM.dll MCI API DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180winrnr.dll LDAP RnR Provider DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180WLDAP32.dll Win32 LDAP API DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180WS2_32.dll Windows Socket 2.0 32-Bit DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180WS2HELP.dll Windows Socket 2.0 Helper for Windows NT Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180wshtcpip.dll Windows Sockets Helper DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180WSOCK32.dll Windows Socket 32-Bit DLL Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180xfire_toucan_29183.dll Xfire Toucan DLL Xfire Inc. 0.00.0000.0000
jewelisheaven Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 That is indeed a vanilla XP. :/The only extra DLLs inserted are Xfire and that Apple BonJour thing. While this is at 100% are ANY torrents showing as "checking" status? That's all I can think of currently
Firon Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 Look at what's using CPU on Process Explorer. Is it actually the ut process?
rofflwaffle Posted December 14, 2007 Author Report Posted December 14, 2007 link for size I guess.http://i18.tinypic.com/8es8md4.pnguTorrent only appears to be using 1.2 - 2% of the cpu.
jewelisheaven Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 EEK! Hardware Interrupts.Yea, that's a pisser to diagnose. I could always diagnose it with some special thread in firefox when it happened to me.
DreadWingKnight Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 And my first thought is that the hard drive has lapsed into PIO mode or something like that.
tomh Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 If you have IDE hdd(s) right click My Computer > Properties. Go to Hardware > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Click on the '+' sign next to it and then right click on the Primary or Secondary IDE channel (depending on which one your hdd(s) are connected to) option and select Properties > Advanced Settings. In the Advanced Settings tab, there is an entry labeled Transfer Mode. Check if it says DMA if available. If its ok I can only recommend you to update your drivers and other disk IO related programs such as cd burning software. Are you sure you use all programs listed or some of them just stays on your system? Try to get rid of some if you do not use them. (Creative cd detector, hp lightscribe process, etc...)
DreadWingKnight Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 , there is an entry labeled Transfer Mode. Check if it says DMA if available. This isn't enough. Even if it's set to "DMA if Available" it will still lapse into PIO for the current transfer mode.Don't try to argue this, it has happened to my own machines multiple times. The "Current transfer mode" box (which is offset from the "Transfer Mode" drop-down) will list the CURRENT transfer mode. If it's PIO for either device, uninstall the IDE channel in device manager and reboot.
tomh Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 True. Happened to me too, just quickly quoted this text for help but yes, the device should be uninstalled if the current mode won't show DMA.
santaftw Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Hello I have a similiar problem, i get 100% disk overload, and was reading up on topics here, and saw process explorer and d/l it 2 see what it told me I also have over 95% cpu usuage, not from hardware interupts, but from idle, and have sata drive, here is link: http://www.dataphone.se/~danni/ut.jpgCan that have something to do with my disk overload ?
ajones81 Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 @santaftw: Please stick to your original thread and refrain from thread hijacking.Re. the System idle Process 'hogging' 94.62% of your CPU, see here (http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000873.html) and here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_idle_process).
santaftw Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Sorry, didnt really know i was hijackin anything, tought it was fitting in here, i dunno, im here for help aint I ? Sorry for any inconvince doh
rofflwaffle Posted December 15, 2007 Author Report Posted December 15, 2007 Thanks for the help all. Nothing is working, but I'm sure if I play with it enough I can figure it out. Thanks anyway.
ajones81 Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 @rofflwaffle: Since it happens only when uTorrent is running (not with other torrent programs?), and uTorrent itself is not hogging the CPU, the culprit has to be faulty H/w drivers or the H/w itself (HDD, router, even RAM etc.) that the program interacts with or impacts. I guess you'll have to check them out one by one and I don't suppose it's gonna be easy... :/P.S. See if the event log shows any errors.
