Recommended Posts

I am having a problem when downloading torrent files with utorrent. My computer is freezing when i downlaod large torretn files of 2GB or more, with a piece size of 4MB if the hash pieces are smaller like 64KB or 128KB the computer wont freeze. by freeze i do mean the entire computer locks up keyboard and mouse and I am forced to hard restart the computer by pushing the button on my case. It only happens with the larger files that i specified and i am running a:

AMD X2 4200+

Windows XP SP2

3GB RAM

System thank you for any and all help you can give i appreciate the time you have taken to assist.

RAM spec is nice, but Are you overriding any of the Ctrl-P -> Advanced -> Disk Cache settings?

Do you notice any system slowdown prior to the "freeze". Have you tried killing utorrent's process through Windows Task Manager or another 3rd party tool to see if you can relaunch it without having to reboot?

Generally this freezing is caused by conflicts with programs holding open files uT needs to operate. If you wouldn't mind downloading, running, and pasting a HiJackThis log below it would be great :D

i have not hcanged any settings in the advanced disk cache there is no system slowdown prior to the freeze and i am unable to kill the process as my system is completely locked up keyboard does not work nor does the mouse the computer does not respond to any requests at all. Gotta wonder whether those Seagate processes are even needed...

Um, have you updated your chipset/motherboard drivers? The AMD X2 motherboards were once known to have problematic drivers.

Final idea... Start > Run > devmgmt.msc

Check the properties for the primary/secondary IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to see if any of the devices' current transfer mode are in PIO.

Ultima:

All current transfer modes in are set for DMA if available and the current transfer modes for both controllers are Ultra DMA modes 2 or 6

Drivers have been updated through ULI on the Nvidia page.

would it matter if it seems to happen mostly when saving to the drive thats on the SATA controller? That doesnt limit it but seems to be more frequent when saving the files on the SATA drive.

Well the problem can be either hardware or software. With hardware it's usually drivers. With software it's usually chain-of-events or hooking into the normal process of windows working which causes this. This is of course if it's not something obvious like being listed on the Incompatible Software section of the FAQ or some real-time scanner which does not except uTorrent's settings directory or your download directory.

To check the first possibility of software incompatibility could you go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ and download process explorer. It will allow you to export the list of hooked DLLs into uTorrent's process. Note this will only work if it is linking into it. If it is trying to hold open your files downloading, to verify you can temporarily enable the "append !ut" under Ctrl-P -> Downloads to see if that stops uT main GUI from freezing.

Back to the process for exporting the DLL list, open Procexp.exe, enable the lower pane (Ctrl-L), switch to DLL mode (Ctrl-D) and save-as (Ctrl-A).

Pasting the log will show exactly what is being loaded, as well showing a process heirarchy of the running processes. That feature is also helpful if there is a rogue or spontaneous process outside of where it would normally be expected.

jewel:

I have always had the append option checked i just prefer it that way. So i cannot test that variable.

as for sysinternal the info is below thank you both for your time and patience. jus tto make sure it is only with torrents that have piece size's of 1.00MB or larger other than that i have no problems. It wouldnt be such an issue if it didnt take like 3 months to d/l a file because of the computer halting.

First thanks for bearing with me. Yea :/ Bad news, it's time to start uninstalling "extra" processes if your networking hardware drivers are updated. There is an incompatibility with at least one of the processes you have running right now.

The first one I would look at is your dlink range booster, followed by TVersity media center, and the seagate processes... If you don't want to uninstall them outright, it's going to take tweaking advanced settings which can "monitor" live processes, or traffic, or files on your hard drive. :/ To specifically find out what is causing the problem you can systematically start unchecking or uninstalling things along the lines I mentioned above *found under the program's advanced features*. Generally speaking Anti-Virus Live Scanners don't cause problems because they don't try to write to files... but others such as media indexers (are you sure Tversity doesn't do any background tagging or looking at all files?), or networking QoS systems , or bad networking drivers... have all been diagnosed as problems in the past.

This would be so much easier if uT crashed at least :(

NOTE: all of this is assuming Firon wasn't correct in stating that your hardware is starting to die.

I'm sorry I can't give definite answers in this arena.

well it shouldnt be a hardware issue as the board and hard drives are new as of 2 months ago. as for the seagate process they have been uninstalled. and the probelm still exists so i will move on to my range booster software. than tversity from there. should i just use the uninstall features that come with the programs or is there other advanced removal features that i should use?

tversity and rangeboost program have been uninstalled. i hadta reinstall the drivers though so that i can have inet capabilities as when i uninstalled the software the drivers were removed also was a pain getting drivers though i couldnt find the install disk and had no internet lol. As i said though i have uninstalled the tversity software and rangeboost software and removed all seaggate softwar as well as the processes that were in teh hijackthis log. I am going to restart now and try to see if it will freeze. Are these avast services okay to have?

!!! GRRR. So I'm guessing 1 hour is ALOT of time compared to what you're used to.

Hey I have a simpler fix for the next group of tasks. Start -> Run -> msconfig

Untick all of the programs in the Run-on-windows-startup folder.

I'm sorry about making you lose internet :( That was short sightedness on my part.

WHOOPS... doesn't exist on XP lol. Uhm, GRR my brain is fried right now. I forget the program that comes with windows which allows you to toggle those options.

The key i'm talking about is "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run". You can just edit the path by prepending ';' to the beginning.. that is if someone else doesn't remind me of the program I was thinking of. (I know about regedit, but that's a potentially CRIPPLING way to break your computer, so it's only recommended for those not faint-of-heart)

Have I mentioned thank you for your patience ;)

EDIT: Wait... doesn't XP come with wireless zero configuration? Is there a specific reason you're using Dlink's network software instead of built into windows?

i since am using the windows zero utility i have only installed the drivers needed to run the card not the software. also its not when i am downloading in parts, sorry i wasn't clear i am referring to the hash checks basically. when u look on the bottom of the general tab of a torrent it says hash pieces *** x 1.00MB or 512K or 4.00MB etc.

example:

Pieces: 867 x 4.00MB

The Freeze only occurs if i am downloading a torrent with the pieces equaling 4MB or more.

It certainly does come with XP. But not with anything earlier (win2k etc).

I had the exact same problem as the OP, but it was all fixed after I got rid of Zone Alarm.

Even tried other BT clients, but no luck.

Looking at the huge list of what he's running on his computer, there are endless opportunities there for a conflict.

I hope you forgive me... I tried it on all THREE XP computers I had up RDP at the time, and NONE knew about msconfig. I guess my slipstreamed minimal installs stripped it out ><

That's the thing about freezing escalation.. If it's obviously incompatible -> Possibly incompatible -> injecting into uT's process -> Disabling software which affects internet one by one.. verifying uT works -> re-enabling software you want to keep, slowly paring the list of suspect processes down.

Yep. Win2K didn't have it but Win9x/ME certainly did. :)

Hmm... If the advanced disk cache settings haven't been touched, I wonder what it is that's causing a freeze only when piece size is >= 4 MB?

@CJM1682: I suppose you've tried reinstalling uTorrent after a (backup and) complete uninstall+reboot? Or else can you try running a standalone encapsulated copy of 1.7.5 and 1.8 and see if either one solves your problem?

Jewel: As for the making a torrent im not really familiar with the process of making one otherwise i would if you would liek to give me a simple instruction to make one for you to try i would do so or if you would liek to look for one thats fine also up to you. but like i said its only torrents with hash sizes of 4.00MB per piece. so that comes out to be torrents of 3GB or more. Is there a way to uninstall utorrent and keep my torrent list i would like as much as possible not to lose my torrents.

Hmm, indeed, with nothing but that, it still freezes. :( I'm stumped if it's an incompatibility

Backing up/restoring is covered in the FAQ, but I have mentioned a process I use here.

As for making a torrent, under the general tab of that torrent which you experience the crashes on, it says 'created time' ... does it list what created the application right next-to it? To create a torrent in uT (which doesn't support > 4 MiB piecesize) check out http://utorrent.com/torrent.php
