uTorrent causes webpages to load MEGA slow (started yesterday)

Hello,

I've been using uTorrent a long time.

Checking port 1720 on <ip>

OK! Port 1720 is open and accepting connections.

As you can see the port is forwarded properly.

Although, starting yesterday. I had a giant batch of around 15torrents running at high speeds.

And since then websites have been loading mega slow when I open uTorrent. At the moment I have 4torrents running at a total of 30kb/s download (My internet is 8Mbps/1Mbps).

Although once a website "loads" finally. (For example once it took 4-5minutes to load the uTorrent Forum) the whole utorrent.com domain runs fast with no problems.

I'd like to know what happened and what I can do to fix this problem (as these loading speeds are horrible.)

Restarting the computer fixes it, I can browse websites fast like I normally should. Yet immediatly upon opening uTorrent everything goes horrible.

I want to be able to torrent and surf the internet at the same time again :(

Vista x64 Service Pack 1

uTorrent 1.7.5 Latest Stable

Using mIRC I just get tons of Software caused Connection Aborts.

Thanks,

-SonicSam

edit: Changing a setting restarts the "4-5minute loading" of websites. For example I wanted to change my speed from the Speed Guide of uTorrent. Changing it caused me to wait another 4-5minutes so I could Edit this post to say this.

PS: I have not changed any settings from when it was working to when it broke. I did "try" to change settings such as the half open connections to try and fix it. But nothing worked so I reverted it all :P

I've heard of this causing 100% cpu usage and slow response on other programs:

O23 - Service: ##Id_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762## (Bonjour Service) - Apple Computer, Inc. - C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe

All the (file missing) messages suggests a VERY messed-up computer, but I think that's just the version of HijackThis! that you're using cannot properly locate/link files in Vista.

Posted

Switeck:

@ "O23": It's not that, that has nothing to do with my Internet Browser Loading times. (For example right now, uTorrent is closed and browsing the internet is fast

@ "Missing files" = HijackThis! just sucks with Vista x64. All those files are in there proper folders in x64 :)

edit: Upon reading this thread (http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=33653) if it's any concern to anyone I have a Core2Quad Q6600 Processor.

Switeck: I have followed everything inside the "SLOW/INTERRUPTED INTERNET CONNECTION OR OFFLINE TRACKERS while µTorrent is running" section of that Troubleshooter with no Success.

NOTE: This does not affect other PC's on the network, the 3 other PC's browse the internet fine

Torrents inside uTorrent are still running at how they should. 300-400kb/s :) which is good. And no that does not cause the loading errors in browsing because I've had speeds like that the past few months and they are perfectly fine. Like I said this started yesterday that download makes my browsing "frozen" :(

As for the extra information you may need.

He mentions it because the general issue (for people who don't run / understand the Speed Guide (Ctrl-G) properly) is to set upload to unlimited or higher than even possible theoretically (thinking 256 kibps == xx/2Mbit) or choking the connection (manually setting it at kibps /8 = KiBps).

jewelisheaven: Ah alright, just making sure :).

Just confirming Switeck's question, yet it is running at the limit I set :P.

As for the actual problem anything else I can try? This is getting annoying considering I don't know whats wrong :(.

Thanks for all the current help you have given by the way :)

edit: I just reopened uTorrent deleted my old settings, started fresh. And it still did it. I restarted for a final time and see that _right_ now it's working. I'll let you know in the morning if it randomly solved itself!!!!!!!!!

Guessing wrong is important, even though it makes me look like an idiot or seems like I'm insulting your intelligence. Confirming stuff for us vastly simplifies what possible problems you might have. And it's best to do the "easy" troubleshooting first, if it's not time-consuming.

I ask about uploading because EVEN when people set upload speed correctly, there's ISP throttling to worry about...bad networking problems...and even viruses and trojans potentially using the upload bandwidth up. Any of those can throw your computer out of whack. Downloading is variable, but uploading on a torrent with lots of peers and you're a seed...should be running very near whatever limit you set, assuming your computer+connection is up to the task.

It seems yours is, but something else is still amiss.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty well stumped.

A corrupted settings file due to multiple version upgrades or system crashes (power outages at key moments when the settings files are open can do it)...sounds like as good a reason as any for your problems.

But I'm a pessimist...On the thorny problems, a solution is seldom found...even the problem's CAUSE is rarely ever discovered. Or if the problem's cause is found, it's not something we can likely fix. And in this case that would mean possible hostile ISP interference of BitTorrent/line-in-general when BitTorrent traffic is sensed. And I can safely say Rogers STILL throttles BitTorrent and no doubt a whole lot more. But whether it's the (main?) cause of this problem...I don't know. I have heard of many types of anti-file-sharing tricks ISPs do, one of which is to cripple the entire line when file sharing traffic (above a certain threshold or any at all) is sensed.

Posted

At the moment everything seems to be fixed. I am enjoying downloading while browsing the internet once again :D!.

My Global: 450

Max per Torrent: 150

Thats what I have it set to now to prove it was not that causing it. See, much higher.

Regardless thanks jewelisheaven and Switeck for all the help you have given. I appreciate it :)

I'm having almost exactly the same problems as SonicSam. I updated to 1.7.7 on Thursday night and I started noticing this on Saturday. It started driving me crazy that I've gone through two routers, changed all the settings in uTorrent that is recommended in the forums. I even uninstalled and reinstalled my network drivers, updated my mobo drivers and done about everything in between.

The problem only occurs when uTorrent is running and the connection on my PC is completely nerfed to the point where it won't improve until uTorrent has been closed.

My ISP is Time Warner which is known to packet shape, however they don't do it in my region and I've never noticed it. I also doubt that it is them because I've had difficulty reaching my router's config web interface.

I'm going to go about deleting and reinstalling uTorrent as a last hope. It's truly strange because it just started out of the blue.

Posted

Maybe, you missed the part where I said I changed all the settings that is recommended on the forums with no success.

My configuration is an Linksys RT31P2 Phone Router that is connected to a Surfboard Cable Modem. I have my parts forwarded to port number 30001, but I always changed it to port 50001 in case there was a conflict. I was green with my ports open on uTorrent.

I figured that maybe it was my Router, but I switched it out with another one, a Linksys BEFSR41 V3. The problem persisted and I still web browser was slow when uTorrent was running, even with no torrents active.

I thought that maybe it was my nVidia Network Port, which has problems with nvappfilter.dll. I reinstalled my drivers and updated them to the latest. That was not the issue.

I have a similar problem where sometimes the websites will load slowly, but once I'm on a domain it will a tad better. I wouldn't say that it takes 4-5 mins to load, but more like 20-30 seconds. I have however had my router's web configuration page time out of me numerous times, on both routers.

As was mentioned, it didn't effect other PCs on the network and it didn't seem to effect non-http traffic because I was still able to transfer files via ftp to other computers at decent speeds.

I know I have to throttle upload otherwise it was kill my connection, however it would do this even if no torrents were in queue and just the program itself was running.

My original settings were as followed:

Max Connections: 400

Max Per Torrent: 100

I lowerd them down to the following having read tips on the forum:

Max Connections: 200

Max Per Torrent: 50

It seemed to improve the connection a little bit so I lowered it down to 100 / 50, but didn't improve it any further.

I changed the following settings in the configuration following the guidelines in the forum. I changed them to the 2nd number after no improvement was noticed.

net.max_halfopen 6 / net.max_halfopen 4

bt.connect_speed 8 / bt.connect_speed 8

None of this seemed to work. I've ran a ping test while uTorrent was both on and off and it didn't seem to change the ping times.

As was mentioned by SonicSam, I've also been disconnected on IRC and it seems my connection gets progressively worse the longer I run uTorrent. It will get better gradually as uTorrent is off and back to normal speeds.

The NVidia firewall (forceware somesuch in add/remove programs) is complete garbage. Uninstall it. If you don't want to do that first OK, turn off DHT first. The rest of your HJT log looks fine, no extra services. What's sabnzb? What does setpoint do? ...

Something is overloading your hardware... whether it's a combination of software or bad software added to extra features enabled in uT which cause problems with the hardware, you need to keep turning things off to figure out what DOES get it running again... :/

The nvidia firewall was removed before that post, so whatever is running is just graphics card related. SetPoint is for my Logitech MX518. I know it's a piece of shit, but when I uninstall it my mouse goes crazy so I need those drivers. SABnzbd is a news reader and I've had that both turned on and off.

However, it seems to have gone away by completely deleting everything related to uTorrent on my computer and starting fresh. It somewhat makes sense because I updated to uTorrent 1.7.7 on Thursday and it started on Saturday.

Here I got the same problem.

Accord to my experience, I guess the reason is like following:

When you open too many torrent and each torrent has too many connections, you will push lots of session table entries into your network card device and router. If you are using cable, you slots for browsing is quite limited if your router doesn't support QoS or the QoS is not set correctly. It is not because of your bandwidth to been used up, it is might because the device just can't process the web browsing package less frequently.

I have found several softwares might interfere with utorrent - it is highly likely for my special case. The msn messenger, for example, will cause the uTorrent out of response. I have not if there is a port confliction because I have a torrent in download. So I just shut the msn messenger. The other, I guess I saw it from the hijack this log, is the Warrock. Warrock uses a range of port for the communication -- the torrent style.

I'm presuming you have NOD32 or ESS? Do this to fix...

Right click ESS or NOD32 in system tray

Select Advanced Setup

Goto Antivirus and antispyware > Web access protection > HTTP > Web browsers in the tree

Find uTorrent in the selection window on the right

Put a red cross in the box next to it

Coincidently, this is also useful for Windows Live Messenger and any other application you may be having troubles with

Click OK and exit

Hey presto, she be working ;)
