xbeakerx Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 i got an email the other day:Subject: IMMEDIATE RESPONSE REQUIRED - SERVICE INTERRUPTION IMMINENT ******Dear Valued Clearwire CustomerWe have recently noticed a problem with your account and the Internet traffic on your Clearwire connection that is negatively impacting other Clearwire customers in your area. This particular issue is most likely caused by a virus on your computer. Please contact us as soon as possible at 888 - 253 -2794 and ask for extension ***** or **** so we can help resolve the problem.Thank you for your prompt attentionI called clearwire to find out the problem was and ended up getting bitched at cause i was using up all the upload and download speed in my area with torrents. they knew i was downloading and uploading torrents because of my speed. he then told me that they have a 3 strike rule on torrent downloaders and that i have a 1 gig upload limit per month and exceeded that in one week(i love Top Gear). he said that the 2nd strike will be another talk and then 3rd strike would be disconnect and byebye. so i asked him what can i do to fix this and continue to download torrents. he then told me that he would suggest downloading for only 2-3 hours a day(i was laughing at him under my breath). so watch out and be prepared for this email. thanks for taking the time for reading this.Patrick Quinn
jewelisheaven Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 Nice of them to let you know when you signed up, eh? :/ You know the way to keep this from being an issue is to setup the Scheduler to accomodate your bandwidth / time usage. Calculating 1 GiB.. or better make it GB to be safe... divide by 30 for per day upload, then see when you would like to use the 1/30th of a GB in the day. As far as downloading, they didn't bother to tell you WHAT constitutes a strike did they? Thanks for the input, xbeakerx I vote for a sticky, or a cross-link in the ISPs which interfere thread.
Switeck Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 Even heavy use of online games might push over the 1 GB/month upload limit. What a piece of shit ISP!It better be not much more than dial-up costs!
xbeakerx Posted December 28, 2007 Author Report Posted December 28, 2007 thanks. yeah i've already done Scheduling but it still pissed me off. clearwire also told me that most other highspeed ISPs also restrict your upload so you can watch out for that being that torrents are becoming more and more popular these days. i think they have been restricted my upload and downloads the last couple days cause my speeds are getting bad. i'm going to call them tomorrow and give them a bitching of my own. i hope these posts are help someone to understand and better educate them on ISP tyrant that is Clearwire. did i mention that i'm now stuck in a 2 year contract. EDIT:its costing me about 40 bucks a month after the three month special.(1 month free next 2 months 14.95 including the 4.99 rental charge for the modem)
jewelisheaven Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I would try for most of the month doing all the gaming / voip / non-torrenting you can... and if they give you another notice... really let them have it because "normal usage" should not impede people who don't actively fileshare. I mean, c'mon sure if they don't want to pay for the bandwidth give the information up front for pete'sake. This is the age of the internet where they don't even have to ADVERTISE it, just putting it on their service/plans page is enough legally (I think, not sure about laws in your country). I hear you about the contract... though if they nowhere did state the limitations until after the notice you may be able to get out of it due to "consumer protection" laws, so I would seriously look into that avenue.
