Peter12 Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 Hi,I have looked every where on connection problems concerning µTorrent and thank God I found this forum. When I bought my Dell PC about half a year ago, I dowloaded µTorrent like I always do, on new PC's. I always used to have Windows XP, but on the Dell PC Vista was included. Even though the versions of µTorrent weren't completely ready for Vista I never experienced problems with the program nor did it show any connection problems.About a week ago, I reset my PC. With the Dell computers you can do this by pressing F8 when booting up and aply the factory image: resseting your pc and removing all data. When all that was done, I of course downloaded µTorrent again. However this time things did not go as smoothly as they did about 6 months ago.First off: the µTorrent constantly crashed (before it never did on any of my PC's and especially on this PC). I solved this by the affinaty setting mentioned on this forum; although I do not understand why the application would suddenly crash and not respond on the exact same PC, after a resset.Seceond of all, µTorrent will not download anything. I added torrents and nothing will start to download. I even added torrents from different websites (i.e. mininova, bitsoup, torrentspy etc. etc.) but nothing starts to download, only the uploading works and µTorrent also does that to the maximum of my internet connection 40 kb/s uploading. In addation to that when the µTorrent application is active nothing is wrong with surfing the web, everything just goes smoothly as ever. But when I ' start' a torrent the internet connection doesn' t work. I cannot even go to my routers homepage: 192.168...... etc. My question is: how to solve the last issue and possibly the first too, without having to reset the affinity all the time!I hope I have provided you with all the infromation nessacery to come up with some sort of a solution. It seems to me something is blocking all (attempts of) connections by µTorrent. Many thanks in advance, and I will be happy with all the replies and possible solution for this situation is just driving me crazy!P.S. I have already looked at the firewalls, antivirus etc.etc., and they are all allowing connections from µTorrent...
jewelisheaven Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 Would you be surprised to learn the "restore image" included isn't always the same as what ships out the factory door? On two Dell PCs I have purchased they even forgot to hide the restore partition, AND split up the 80 GB hard drive into TWO 40 gig ones, which was inconvenient. The affinity setting is a result of uT and the hardware not getting along when trying to work on multiple cores. If the affinity setting fixed it, there is no work around that I know of. As far as the settings not working, are you sure you re-setup everything the same in uT? I'm not sure but I think the Vista internet crawl is also covered in Ultima's Ultimate Troubleshooting How-To... Since you have read through some things I would also take a look at the logs produced from HiJackThis and Process Explorer yourself, OR paste them here to see if there are known / suspected / confirmed incompatible programs installed.Concluding, welcome to the forum and a happy new year to you
Peter12 Posted December 31, 2007 Author Report Posted December 31, 2007 Thanks for the reply. A happy new year to you too! Yeah I geuss you are right about the image. It probably isn't perfect, hence the (sometimes) slow responce time of several applications plus µTorrent uses the affinaty settings. Apart from that everything seems to be normal. And I'll live with having to configure the affinity setting. The connection part is more irritating!I have never heard of Process Explorer, but here is my HiJackThis file:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 14:07:38, on 31-12-2007Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16575)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exeC:\Windows\sttray.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\IAAnotif.exeC:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exeC:\Windows\System32\CTHELPER.EXEC:\Windows\System32\CTXFIHLP.EXEC:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exeC:\Windows\System32\CTXFISPI.EXEC:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnscfg.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeC:\Program Files\Google\HiJackThis.exeR1 - 6730 bytesP.S. Why McAfee has several exe' s running is a complete mistery for me, for I uninstalled it... N.B. first I thought it was McAfee blocking my internet connection because I always use Norton, but when I uninstalled it, the problem was still there... but now I see that there are several McAfee exe's still running?!?
ajones81 Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 Those McAfee remnants could be causing problems. (I hate stupid programs that can't even remove themselves properly!) See if there's a removal tool on McAfee's site, or else you might have to delve into the registry etc.You can also try disabling all McAfee-related services etc. using Msconfig. One last suggestion - if you go for a reformat etc., along with the personal data that you backup, remember to also backup uTorrent's settings dir. and any loaded torrents.
Peter12 Posted January 1, 2008 Author Report Posted January 1, 2008 Thanks for all the replies. I downloaded the McAfee removal tool. First ran it normally in Vista, then I reboted and ran it as 'administrator' and reboted. Made another HiJack this file and no more McAfee exe' s runnig in the background! I started µTorrent, et voila! It started to download immediately. Infact it is downloading right now whilst I am typing this messege! So if anyone else is experiencing connection problems try removing McAfee antivirus if you use it... It worked for me!Anyway this is a good start of 2008. Happy new year, and thanks for the help!
ajones81 Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 Glad you got it to work. What sort of CPU do you have (2/4 core)? Can you try testing it now with the processor affinity turned off and see if that works. It may have been only McAfee, in which case you should probably let uTorrent access any core it/Windows sees fit.
Peter12 Posted January 1, 2008 Author Report Posted January 1, 2008 My processor type is Intel Dual Core e6420, 2,13Ghz. Okay, I turned the affinity thing off, and everything seems to be working fine now. It can use both cores now. I geuss we'll just have to wait a little longer to see if it works fully, but I'll keep you posted.
winderdes Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 hi guys, why do so many utorrent users complete downloading files, only to find they wont play with windows media player or get message after attempting to playback the file,u need this player or that player or media player doesnt support these codecs, frustrating to get the files done then not able to play em,please help.
DreadWingKnight Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 winderdes, don't thread hijackespecially not with something that is off topic for these forums.
