David12345 Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 First off I apologise if my problem has been answered in a past thread and would greatly appreciate any link to that thread. My problem is basically whenever I try to download something using Utorrent my Netgear WG111v2 wireless adapter keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting me to my router (which is a Motorola SBG900). Everything else seems to be fine except for this problem, I.e there is a green tick down the bottom and my manual port forwarding is all correct. This disconnecting and reconnecting also only happens when I am downloading using Utorrent and is fine when I'm not downloading, that is I don't disconnect when I have Utorrent running as long as I am not downloading. Rebooting the computer and my modem has no effect and limiting the number of global connections to 100 also doesn't work. Therefore I welcome any solution and thanks in advance for reading my post.
jewelisheaven Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 You are overloading your connection with concurrent connections. If you paste / upload a picture of your Speed Guide (Ctrl-G) settings for verification I would probably tell you to lower it. Consumer class hardware cannot handle many connections, as well as many ISPs use said concurrent connections to automatically throttle your connection (both RoadRunner and Comcast do this in the USA). Anything over 200 is asking for trouble with either or both of the problems. Many people here will tell you 20 per torrent is the maximum under most circumstances. Also Ultima's amazing Troubleshooting How-To may give you ideas.
David12345 Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 Unfortunately I don't think that is the case, first off this problem did not occur until recently (a day or so) and as I have stated I have already tried lowering my global connection slots to no avail.Since I have no idea about uploading (*edit* I'm talking about uploading pictures onto the forums for clarification) I will write my speed specs here.Upload Limit: 30kb/sUpload Slots: 4Connections: 20Connections (global): 100 (have also tried lowering it to 50 but no success there either)Max active downloads: 3Max active torrents: 3I also have the encryption box ticked at the bottom.I currently have Telstra as my ISP and they usually provide pretty good service.
jewelisheaven Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 I'm sorry I didn't see your already-tried-100. It is possible you simply have crappy QoS in your current setup. If it is not the ISP doing the resetting of the connection, there may be interference or something dampening the signal :/ I don't know what to say about the problem being acute other than.. something changed :/ Whether you can figure out what the deciding factor was depends upon being able to isolate variable after variable. Since you know what you have done to your setup recently, is there any change you have made which could contribute to your connection being more unreliable?
David12345 Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 The timeline of this problem went something like this.. Monday : Working.. Tuesday: Working.. Wednesday: Something brokeSorry for being so vague but I really can't think of anything I did that could cause something like this to happen.. I usually never tamper with settings (Not much of a computer person) so I don't know what went wrong, it was only around about a span of 12-14 hours where my Utorrent went from working to broken. Also I'm not very learned in computer slang what is QoS? Sorry for asking =\
jewelisheaven Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 I do not have any experience with wireless setups so I am afraid I cannot ask specifics. I'm sorry I didn't even address your current settings. Currently you have up to 12 upload slots for 30 KiBps which is acceptable but on the low range in my opinion. Connections per torrent is good @ 20. Have you tried only running a torrent from http://www.slackware.com/torrents/ or http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ to see whether you can still download at your expected speeds. You may have been put on a different line / quota from your ISP for excessive usage.QoS is an acronym for quality of service, a procedure many devices allow to keep "high priority" internet traffic moving at peak speeds, at the detriment to all other traffic. Many people consider high-priority traffic to include gaming and voip, and specifically not include streaming media and filesharing traffic.
David12345 Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 My internet connection is far from capped for this month, so my disconnecting as a result of slower speeds isn't the problem. I should also mention that my internet connection is fine and stable as long as i'm not torrenting. Also quality of service shouldn't be the problem as my disconnection issue still happens when I have no other programs running.Sorry for this issue being so troublesome >_<*Update*I have tried everything in Ultima's "Slow/Interrupted Internet Connection or Offline Trackers", unfortunately none of these strategies worked. I have also tried using different bit torrent clients with the same result. In regards to torrent speed, after using various speed checks my average torrent downloading speed is around 300kb/s, therefore I do not think this problem is a result of my internet speed.I would be happy to provide my computer specifications and a proccess log if asked. Any suggestions/solutions to this problem is greatly welcomed.
conship Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 I have exactly the same problem using Netgear 834G V3 Modem Router.I am about to disable the firewall in the router and/or put an exception rule in place for utorrent. Will let you know if this helps in my case.
David12345 Posted January 4, 2008 Author Report Posted January 4, 2008 Ok it seems as though this problem doesn't happen as long as I don't have the port Utorrent is running on forwarded. Hopefully this gives someone a clue as to what the source of my problem is, because downloading without a port forwarded is terribly slow .
jewelisheaven Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 Well it indicates the number of connections is overloading the router... as firewalled peers will never connect to each-other, and being unfirewalled allows incoming connections :/. Please go through Ultima's How-To and pay attention to the limited settings you should employ, reducing the half-open connections, maximum connections, disable DHT, disable LPD, and turn off resolving IPs to hostnames. What specifically do you need to cycle (turn off/on) when the internet freezes you mention its not the computer or the modem, have you tried the router?
