uTorrent & BitComet banned on private tracker

Yesterday the following userwide pm msg was sent to all members of a private torrent site announcing that BitComet has been banned.

=========================

The BitComet torrent client will no longer be permitted on ***Torrents effective December 08, 2005 at 16:00 GMT

This is due to the fact that BitComet disregards the "private flag" and attempts to contact peers on DHT based "trackerless" networks if the torrent is available on such a network. This is a security concern for ***torrents.org.

This is a logic flaw in BitComet and has been recorded on BitComet's forums numerous times. You can verify this by searching in the BitComet forum "BitComet Bugs & Feature Requests" for the term "private" or by viewing this specific topic: http://www.p2pforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=17442.

The proper way to handle the "private flag" is described nicely by Azureus's wiki:

http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/Secure_Torrents

"upon seeing this flag set, (Azureus) will disable any sort of external peer exchange for that torrent; meaning only peers given out by the tracker will be used"

***Torrents recommends using uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com) or Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net) as they both handle the private flag as described above.

Do not complain to ***Torrents staff about this decision; we will make no exceptions. Should the author of BitComet change his clients handling of the private flag in future versions we may revisit the decision at that time.

=============

And now uTorrent is telling me "Failure: Your client is banned". The site has not made any announcements on why uTorrent has been banned yet though.
