eXeel Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Hey,Great program Couldn't find info on this, though. I mark a download in uT, choose Files, and there is a column with # of pieces. Is that how many people has that piece, or?Want to know which files to DL to help out with sharing it faster If it doesn't mean how many has that part of the file, is there another way for me to check what part needs seeding the most?
jewelisheaven Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 The protocol handles piece distribution. If you have 100% of a torrent, just seeding it (or initial-seeding it if you want to conserve upload bandwidth before creating a new seeder on the swarm). If you are downloading a torrent and switch to the Pieces tab, There IS a column with # of peers who have said piece (I think its availability), but you may need to right click on the column header to enable it.
eXeel Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 I can't see anything like Availability in there, and it isn't among the ones I can add to the rows. Those I see in there, doesn't seem to have anything to do with availability of pieces, sadly...
jewelisheaven Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Uhm, Oh! you're probably right. I was and have been using the 1.8 pre-beta testing version :/ On that one there is a column called "availability" under the Pieces tab. Sorry about the confusion. The new 1.8 of uT can be found @ http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=31998
geck222 Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Right click the coloum rows along the top of pieces tab. It should show other display options for the chart. This works for other tabs in Utorrent 1.7.5pieces are parts of a file that make a whole. Its like a slice of pie or a puzzle piece. Utorrent is basically assembling these "pieces" into one big file.Availability is how many FULL pieces or files that are in the network of peers and seeders. The more availability the better chance of finishing your download.
eXeel Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 I have 1.6.1, as all 1.7.x is banned from my private tracker and I don't know if 1.8.x alpha is stable enough for me Can I someplace see the new features 1.8 gives? Or is it only possible to see the changes, with bug fixes etc included?
DreadWingKnight Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 We don't support 1.6.1, and any private tracker that bans 1.7.x is victim of the lemming effect.
ajones81 Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 The thread linked above (http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=31998) has a list of all changes made so far in 1.8.As for 1.7.x being banned, there are absolutely no problems with the latest stable version (1.7.5). 1.7.1 had a stats reporting problem or something to that effect, but none of the versions after that did. So your private tracker admins are plain lazy/idiotic for not bothering to check out the latest version for themselves and then forcing people to use an unsupported version. The upshot of it all is that either switch to 1.7.5 or no more support here. :/ Sorry, but them's the rules.
eXeel Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 All fair, naturally you can't keep supporting earlier versions Thanks for the link, will think about using the alpha version and then checking back with my tracker to hear more about their reason for 1.7.5 being banned too...Thanks for the response, though you didn't need to, as I can understand from what you're saying, ajones. And you too, Dread Keep up the good work.
ajones81 Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 Well, thanks for understanding, and a response is always warranted, as simply ignoring a poster who's taken the time and effort to register and post is just not civil. We're all trying to help each other here, and part of that means we move with the times and upgrade as and when new versions come out, unless there are excellent reasons not to (never been the case for me so far).Talking to the tracker admins and letting them know how you feel is the first step to take when they make such decisions out of ignorance or plain laziness.Re. the alpha, I recommend running it self-contained in order to try it out. While it may be exceptionally stable for an alpha, it is after all an alpha and not even a beta, so caution is advised in case you're planning to use it as your main client. If you come across any issues, don't forget to post them in that 1.8 thread I mentioned above. The devs are monitoring that thread and respond on a regular basis, as will be clear if you care to glance at any of the 40-odd pages (and counting). No requests in that thread though please, there's a section in this forum for that.Cheers and have a nice day!
