izzy Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Hi I read the router FAQ and the wiki pages and am currently doing the fixes listed for known bad routers witch is good for now.But since it says the best thing to do is buy a better router. To try to make it easier and because I was thinking about upgrading any way I wanted to know if any one knows about any known compatibility or performance issues in utorrent or P2P in general with the linksys model WRT600N its a Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router. The specs can be found here http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1175237911752&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=1175290404B02#widgetI want this router mainly for the fact that it has the Dual-Band Wireless-N for my wireless the gigabit for my wired PCS and the usb storage link for my external hard drive. So I was wondering if any one knows any thing about this router that would be particularly bad with using it with P2P because as far as the router it self goes it does every thing else I want it to do so any feedback would be appreciated thanks.
jewelisheaven Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Generally speaking... WIRELESS IS BAD. It is less reliable than a wired connection and no matter the bandwidth / frequency it doesn't support as many concurrent connections (not that you should need them mind you, recommended settings for tweaking configurations regularly come up with < 20 connections per torrent and multiply that by the # of torrents the Speed Guide suggests for global settings)... As long as you setup your uT to not overtax the hardware, you should be good to go. It is in the instances where it locks up / your modem resets automatically from your ISP.. where limiting connections even LOWER than the Speed Guide recommends usually resolves the problem.
izzy Posted January 13, 2008 Author Report Posted January 13, 2008 thanks for responding yes thats certainly true with wireless I only wanted the wireless for my laptop that has a N card.So I could send stuff from my desktop to my laptop over wireless at N speeds. But you are right that I planed to only run utorent or other P2P on my desktop that has a gigabit Ethernet card for its connection witch is why I wanted it to have gigabit. So If I only use the desktop running the wired gigabit Ethernet with P2P and use the wireless only to send things from the desktop to my laptop then do you know about any other performance issues specific to the linksys WRT600N router that would be an issue with P2P.That would put it on the list of bad routers for P2P.Also about the speed guide I read all the FAQS and the help files on it and set it up the right way and it works I think but other then the speed guide is their any other settings I need to change in utorrent to make it faster or now that everything is set the way the help files and faq says to set it.Than are any slow download speeds I get just the result of the people I connect to not having any more upload bandwidth available or are their other settings not listed in any of the help files FAQS or wikis that will make my downloads faster.since all of my utorrent settings are currently set the way utorent.com says to set them by using the settings the Speed Guide recommends than are their any secret settings that will speed up downloads.because as you know lots of other people my say they have ways to make downloads faster but I only want things that work and at the same wont make me a lecher as its not nice and many trackers and seeders don't like seeing people the don't do their fair share to share the files that they take the time to seed and some I hear will even disconnect you if you have a bad share ratio. And would limiting connections even lower than the Speed Guide recommends or lowering any settings lower then the Speed Guide recommends make my downloads any faster like would it really help a lot with the download speeds to do things like just never download more than one file at a time or does it not matter if you download more than one file as long as like you said I don't overtax my hardware than is it fine.thanks again.
jewelisheaven Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 What kind of speeds are you getting on torrents? What speed do you get on the test torrents in the How-To? What are your speed test results? Without this information ANY answer from anyone is a BEST-GUESS estimate. :/
izzy Posted January 13, 2008 Author Report Posted January 13, 2008 ok I just redid the how to speed test and they said download speed of 4599.52 kbps or 574.94 KBps upload 603.92 kbps or 75.49 KBps.But I did well over a dozen speed tests and the high test set downloads as high as 725 KBps to 750 KBps and uploads almost as high as 78 KBps.And so to be safe my speed guide is set to xx/512 as the faq says to round down as the next one up is xx/640 and that would be too much to be safe.As for the test torrents I consistantly got an average download speed of about 600.00 kbps but mostly more. With it spikeing as high as 650.00 to 670.00 kbps but never going lower than 554.00 kbps but the funny thing is with normal torrents from the internet like with the one thats running now that I am only downloading the one file with no others downloading or seeding and I am haveing trouble keeping and maintaining an average download speed of more than 20 to 25 kbps with it going as low as 1.xx or 0.xx and not normaly spikeing much higher than 35 kbps.Any time it gets much higher than 35 kbps its no more than a few seconds. And it says that it has 17 seeds and 90 peers so I dont think its just a case of a dead turrent. Also I know I did the how to fixes corectly becase I did the test if port is forwarded properly from speed guide and it said OK! port 26329 is open and accepting connections You will be able to receive incoming BitTorrent connections. And port 26329 was the port speed guide gave me so I followed the faq to get that result. So thats how I was able to pass the test with OK! port 26329 is open and accepting connections as the result. So with those as my results that is why I was asking about if the slow download speeds I was geting was due to the seeds and peers I was connecting to just haveing some very low upload speeds avalable or upload issues in general on their side or if I thair is more I need to do other than speed guide or what can be found in the utorrent.com help files faqs guides or wikis linked or refernced in utorrent.com.As I dont want to just try random things that might not work or worse yet make it worse and I want to be good and try to keep a good share ratio.Any ideas would be great or do I just need to get the new linksys WRT600N router as pluging it directly with out a router is just not an option for me.So the best I can do is try to get the best router. At least as far as the router part is concerned.Let me know what you think now that you know my speed numbers.I am very greatfull for any opinons thanks.
