ryuken3k
I got the I/O device error while downloading to an external hard drive. Can I still salvage the data I downloaded and is there something wrong with my external drive?
Ultima
What was the exact error message? Can you still access the data? If so, you can try copying it over to another drive and try resuming the download from there (after you use Advanced > Set Download Location... in the torrent corresponding job's context menu). ryuken3k
I think the error was 'Error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error' If I tried again, I downloaded the file on to the external hard drive. I just wanna know if the problem lies in the torrent or my external hard drive.
DreadWingKnight
drive letter change?
ajones81
If you're unsure about the external drive, run a chkdsk /r on it.The "I/O device" mentioned in the error clearly indicates a problem with the drive, not the torrent. As DWK noted above, the drive letter might have changed if you disconnected and then reconnected it. Best thing to do if that's the case is to go to Start / Run / Diskmgmt.msc, right-click the external drive and change it's drive letter back to what it was earlier. Then force-recheck the torrent and continue.
ryuken3k
um...how exactly do I perform a disk check on an external hard drive? Could someone please give me the steps for this procedure?
ajones81
I guess Start / Run / Cmd / "Chkdsk X: /R" should do the trick (without the quotes, of course), where X: is your external disk's letter.
ryuken3k
I got the message "Access Denied" after typing chkdsk X: /R
DreadWingKnight
is X: the letter for your external drive?
ajones81
:| In the Cmd window, just try typing X: (I did say replace 'X' with your drive's actual letter!)Do you still get that message? Can you even browse the device in Explorer? ryuken3k
I get the X: message thing! xD. I tried manually disk checking the external hard drive drive by going to My Computer right clicking it and going to Properties but thats taking forever. And yes, I still get that message. ajones81
Ok, let me spell it out for you. Go to Explorer. Look at the external drive connected to your PC. It should be listed like My External Drive (X: ), right? Now it'll not be X: in the brackets (usually), but something like D:, E: etc.So when I said in the Cmd window type Chkdsk X: /R, replace X: with the letter you saw in the step above. Can't make it simpler, sorry. :|P.S. It will take time. Go do something else and let it finish!
ryuken3k
Dude, I knew what you were trying to explain a while ago about the whole "X" thing. Its just that I kept getting the "access denied" BS. I got that message because I went to the Properties/Tools section by right clicking my external hard drive and disk checking from there, but now I can disk check from the cmd window. Thanks for your help though! If many others were as patient and respectful like you, the world would be a better place.
