uTorrent stopping my internet to work

Hi. I have the latest version of uTorrent installed on my computer, and every time my computer is downloading a torrent, my computer is unable to connect to any websites whatsoever. I also have this in the tracker status on uTorrent

"An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient bugger space or because the queue was full."

As soon as my download is finished, or I turn off uTorrent, everything goes back to normal. I have peerguardian and ZoneAlarm both installed, and have tried it without both running, but to no avail

Can anyone help with this problem please?

Sorry for the duplicate post - but i noticed this newer thread after i replied to an older one:

I have this same problem, but only on my desktop (running Home premium) not on my laptop (Vista Business):

On the desktop, having utorrent running, even with no great activity, then neither firefox nor IE will load pages.

I have updated to latest beta (no better) turned off QOS and UPNP in router (ditto) and lowered my global connections (only when very very low - 15 global max - does my browsing return)

I'm getting the same error message for the tracker status in utorrent (although 'buffer space' rather than 'bugger space' as quoted above ), and my browser isn't functioning properly. Need to click links four or five times to work; when pages do come up, it's often with no style sheet. I generally use Firefox, but it's much the same in IE. This all occurs whether utorrent is on or not, and whether the firewall (ZA) is on or not.

I read in another thread a suggestion for registry changes, but I'm reluctant to do that, especially when this problem has only just occurred and everything was running fine for a long period of time before that. I haven't changed any settings recently in utorrent or Firefox, and certainly haven't been in the registry.

If, as was suggested in the older thread by Firon, something's messing with the connection, does that mean virus? If it's just settings, why would it change when it's functioned fine previously?

Thanks.

Yeah, I did have net.max_halfopen on a non-default setting. It's set to default now though and no difference. Besides, utorrent's been working fine with it on the non-default for a couple of months. Thanks for the suggestion.

... but Microsoft's Patch Tuesday included a SEVERE fix for remote-exploit based in the networking subsystem which would of course reset tcpip.sys... the main patch people apply to get more connections faster post winME... that's why I suggested it ;)

Ah, jewelisheaven, you just leapt several rungs up the ladder of techno-familiarity. No idea what most of that means. But, I guess the fundamental point is that, while I may not have changed anything, MS update has. So, given the half-open setting didn't make a difference, what's my next move?

Follow the How-To. Or you can post a picture of your current Speed Guide settings. If your half-open was set non-standard and a bit high, I bet your other settings are also high for your connection. The more connections you let/tell uT to use the more it will, and on low-quality/crappy consumer hardware you will feel it. You will also hear the dedicated support staff tell you ZoneAlarm is junk. If you have a hardware firewall (read as: ISP -> modem -> router -> computers) your need for a software firewall is... reduced by ORDERS of magnitude. Given the specific error you are/were seeing is covered @ http://utorrent.com/faq.php#Incompatible_Software that was why I jumped to that conclusion. If you have not rebooted, re-logged in, etc there is no guarantee the setting took. I say this with great empathy for a non-working computer, but the simple fact reports of problems increasing by 400% after the recent MS patch and reports of resolution after re-setting or re-applying patches which were installed previously suggests the problem is not with uT. However if the problem does persist and perhaps the new changes made to protect against exploits in the networking stack HAVE altered uT's ability to function, the reports to ascertain such must include all the previous suggested fixes from thepre-made guides and Ultima's rollup How-To.

The problem is with your Router most likely.

What Router do you use?

Here's my situation, and how i fixed it.

Using a Linksys Router with factory firmware (it means that's a bad thing)

Connections limit is aprox 90~100 for the router, anything more than that the router will LOCK UP, and will require a button reset in the router box, even if it doesn't lock up webpages will go real slow, and even worse for secure web pages

Firefox is more susceptible to this than IE, since FireFox uses average 20 connections

So in utorrent i set Max Global to 70, giving me about 20+ free room to spare for regular web browsing and gaming.

then i set the rest for 10 (peer per torrent) and 10 (slots per torrent)

and then for Queueing 7 active torrent, and 5 download

meaning 70 / 7 = 10 so each torrent gets 10 peer/seed and 10 slots 1 for each of those peer/seed

and on the Queue side it means out of 7 working torrents 5 are for download, 2 are for upload

if you change the 5 to a 3 then you'll have 3 downloads (leeching) and 4 uploads (seeding)

by the way if you leave the above settings both Unlimited for download /upload speed, then the connection usually reaches 5Mbits download and 2.5 Mbits upload (and this is Mbits, not Mbytes)

so set the Global speed accordingly to match your ISP connection.

I'm on a 10Mbit so speed itself doesn't affect me at all, the router was my problem.

Linksys might be bad for connection handling, but it's the best in regards to features, and reliability compared to other router brands like Dlink, 3com, Neargear, Belkling, etc, etc

Copy paste is your friend. It does not help individual users with their problems. Of the minority of people who fileshare, even a smaller minority will have connections comparable to yours so your settings do not help them.

Thanks, folks. And sorry jewelisheaven, bit embarrassed that the answers were right there in the guides. Appreciate the gentle prods in that direction. I do generally look before posting.

AllGamer, followed your advice on the connections. I've got a Dlink which I configured from a couple of tutorials. No good, you say?

Can't say as I've experienced any issues with mine except for an annoying habit of defaulting to an old username and password whenever the power goes off. But then, ignorance is bliss. I regularly discover that I am trundling along on the equivalent of an old bicycle, while others seem to be driving ferraris. My brother recently informed me that he was getting 800 kB/s downloads just when I was pretty pleased with myself for getting a consistent 50.
