Harry2o Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Hi,just figured out the following phenomenon:With my previous Vista installation I was using ZoneAlarm, so I had to start µtorrent with administrator privileges (which made it run a little longer, but didn't stop it from freezing eventually). Now I am using "PC Tools Firewall Plus" (which is freeware, btw) so I don't have to start it with administrator privileges any more. I thought it was due to the new installation of the new firewall that all of a sudden I could open .torrent files (be it from Windows via double-click or from Firefox after downloading) directly - I didn't have to manually add them from within µtorrent. With my previous installation I always got the message that µtorrent appears to be already running. As I now accidentally started µtorrent with administrator rights, I got that message again. I closed it, started it with normal rights, and viola - I can add .torrents directly Sorry, if this had already been answered, I just wanted to share with the community, that it's not ZoneAlarm's fault, but the administrator rights that caused that message Cheers~Harry
jewelisheaven Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Both sound like sub-par solutions. Is there a reason you want a software firewall? Are you not using a router behind your ISP's connection?... and the problems you report sound unrelated. If you see multiple entries for multiple versions of uT in your RUN, that would make sense that it says "already running"... If you know where uT is running from and you're unable to get a GUI up due to the above message, you can try "path\to\utorrent.exe /BRINGTOFRONT" which will un-hide and un-minimize uT.
Harry2o Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 Just like I said, it doesn't have anything to do with the firewall, as I first suspected. (And of course there is a reason why I use a software firewall).Fact is, if I start µTorrent with administrator privileges and try to open a .torrent file, then it would show me that µTorrent is already running (which it is, of course). Only if I start it with user privileges can I open .torrent files directly (without having to click "Add Torrent").
jewelisheaven Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Yea I don't know how those processes differ.. what about trying to drag torrents into the uT main GUI.. in both administrator and non-administrator privileges?
Krazzy-K Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I installed system mechanics professional 7 and every since uTorrent will not run. I'll open it up and it will not pull the screen up so I'll try again and it says it appears to be running, but when I open task manager it doesn't say that it is running. anyone had trouble with this before?
jewelisheaven Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 If uninstalling System Mechanics lets uT run again... ask them about it in all honesty. They may be motivated enough to look into it since you paid for their professional version... or not. Is there some sort of "protection" it offers which can be made an "exception" for utorrent.exe?
Harry2o Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 what about trying to drag torrents into the uT main GUI.. in both administrator and non-administrator privileges?"Same" result.Draging a .torrent into the main GUI with µtorrent running with administrator privileges stays without effect - simply nothing happens when I drop the file. Works just fine with user privileges.(Note: Tested after upgrading to 1.7.6)
ajones81 Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Sounds like unexpected behaviour. File a bug report?
jewelisheaven Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Not until a log has been posted, lol. If Harry2o or Krazzy-K are still reading, please provide a HiJackThis log to determine the gneral state of your computer. Also check in your msconfig output if there are multiple lines for running utorrent. Or just paste a snippet of a screenshot showing the lines where uTorrent.exe is told to run from.
Harry2o Posted January 20, 2008 Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 I'm still reading.I don't run µTorrent at windows start, I just run it manually. The described behavior (opening .torrent files by double-click or browser download producing the message "already running") appears when I manually start µTorrent with administrator privileges under Vista. So, µtorrent isn't told anywhere where to run from, I just start it manually. If a HiJackThis log will help, I will see about a way how to get it to the ppl who can use it - I don't want my whole system's configuration be posted publicly.
DreadWingKnight Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Post it here, because if people who have the same configuration as you have the same problem, the cause and solution will be the same.
smitz Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 i have the same problem with the latest stable release of utorrent. Following are the details:1. When i run utorrent, utorrent.exe appears under processes in task manager. even if i close it and restart, the GUI doesnt appear.2. The case is the same with ABC torrent client too.3. i tried disabling eset smart security firewall. but no gains.4. i switched firewall to manual mode and allowed all network traffic initiated by utorrent (and ABC)but still the GUI doesnt show up.. can you help me out? its kinda urgent
jewelisheaven Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 ... with uT running, you can try to force the GUI up. . . Is it possible you started it in hide or minimized mode? You need to know where uT is launched from. This should be obvious to you, or you may need to use Process Explorer from sysinternals.com . Type "path\to\utorrent.exe" /BRINGTOFRONT in a command prompt or the run dialog. That will bring up the uT window if any exist. Additionally you may have conflicting uT startup entries... verify from the launch shortcuts you use as well as start->run->msconfig
smitz Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 the uT icon is not displayed in the tray either.. so i guessed the bringtofront thing wouldnt work.. and it didn't.about the startup entries, i dont ahve uT in my startup.. i manually boot it up when i need it.Thankyou for your reply.. but my problem stays
jewelisheaven Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 If uT is running according to task manager ... Try to kill it and double check the shortcut you use with right click -> Properties. Since /BRINGTOFRONT didn't pop up the UI, it's freezing somewhere during the startup.
smitz Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 @jewelisheaven the properties finds target perfectly.. i tried reinstalling and all.. nothing helps@fironyou mean uninstall my antivirus, firewall and every security feature i have? i wonder how thats gonna help cuz its worked perfectly well with everything running till my last boot.
smitz Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 I tried uninstalling Eset Smart security.Ran uT without an antivirus and windows firewall...... the problem stays. Not only with utorrent, but all other torrent clients including ABC, BitSpirit and BitComet.Next, i disabled windows firewall and reinstalled uT. No avail yet.Does my pc have virus or something that's blocking torrent activity?
jewelisheaven Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Good question. Post a HiJackThis log and a DLL list of utorrent.exe from Process Explorer please. (open procexp, Ctrl-L, Ctrl-D, click utorrent.exe, Ctrl-A)... If uT starts up is it actually like DOING anything? Checking the Procexp.exe log will help figure that out.

jewelisheaven Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 I don't see anything injected into uT's process so it has to be external. Unfortunately no I can't tell you at this point what was causing the problem
Ultima Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Try uninstalling TuneUp Utilities. It may well be the WinStyler that's causing the problem.
