andyjc67 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 i have got slow downloads and i am using vista with netgear next n dg 834n router and bt no limit broadband and still speeds ate slow and i share files speed is on a average of 5k/b no faster please help
Switeck Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I think BT ISP in UK has very recently started throttling BitTorrent traffic, particularly during afternoon-evening hours (about 4 PM to Midnight). Are your download AND upload speeds equally bad at around 1 am to 7 am?
andyjc67 Posted January 20, 2008 Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 my speeds are very slow as far as i am aware from when i get up till about 1am then they speed up but they do not indrematically some do but not all of them as some are still only about 15 - 25 k/b the other thing i was thinking of doing was changing my isp provider which would be a good choice a few reviews say eclipse or zen but i do not now any one using these and where i live we do not have digital lines so can not get telewest or bluyonder
jewelisheaven Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Can you list / provide which steps you have already gone through in Ultima's How-To? Also listing your current settings for the Speed Guide (Ctrl-G) and Ctrl-P -> BitTorrent and Ctrl-P -> Connection "limits" fields would help.
andyjc67 Posted January 20, 2008 Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 i am using port 45682 and i have put port forwarding on and i went to google and put in how to icrese download speen in utorrent and it linked me to this page www.johntp.com/2006/04/19/how-to-increase-download-speeds-of-utorrent/ and did all settings as it said as i have 8meg download worked it out or is just my isp provider
jewelisheaven Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 hmm? Are you saying that WORKED or DID NOT WORK? I like his application of "upload slots = 1 + upload cap / 6" presumably to keep 6 KiBps upload PER PEER per slot... but it doesn't work with too many active torrents. Splitting your upload means MAX_UPLOAD / (torrents * slots) and IMNSHO should ALWAYS > 5 KiBps. I try to keep it at 10 as sometimes I see speeds in excess of 100 KiBps for peers where I upload > 10 KiBps.
Switeck Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 3 KiloBYTES/sec per upload slot is perfectly fine, especially with innumerable BitComet clients out there that love to give sub download KiloBYTE/sec speeds. While seeding, it's best to be higher if possible...even just enough to max out your upload speed. While downloading, you can draw more attention with more upload slots running at ~3 KiloBYTES/sec than fewer at ~5 KiloBYTES/sec.
andyjc67 Posted January 25, 2008 Author Report Posted January 25, 2008 is utorrent better than other torrent softwarecan you tell how to do settings and what they are i am using latest utorrent so i now they are rightis it ok running vistai am thinking of going to virgin broadband from bt ?i am using a netgear routeri still have slow downloads like at the moment it is between 1kbs - 5kbsAndy
jewelisheaven Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 Better is relative. What metric are you using to measure? Have you read the Setup Guide (Guides link #3)? Vista has been supported for a while. I think both providers have had problems mentioned on the forum, search yourself. Netgear like most consumer hardware can misbehave if you are overloading it. What are your current settings in the Speed Guide as well as any error messages you are seeing?
andyjc67 Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 in the speed test guide it says it is okbut i have recently done fresh install and have not touched utorrent left it standard to when you have downloaded it only thing changed port number not adjusted any of the arameters ie max download and upload or pecentage etcthis is why i would like to now if it is set up and any tweeks so i can get fast downloads.this is why i thought of changing isp as well as so many people say problems with btthanks andy
jewelisheaven Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 OK. If you haven't setup the Speed Guide drop-down for your connection (upload speed from the speed test should be closest xx/NUMBER you see) you're probably choking your connection. If you look at the Speed tab, and scale to 5 or 30 seconds, do you see a relatively horizontal line for uploads or does it make peaks and valleys alot?
andyjc67 Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 right i have done thatin the speed tap i have a stepping peak then underneath it there is another red line with gaps inbebteen like dashes and the peak has now leveled out and is staying at the top
jewelisheaven Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 This is a 10 minute log of data transfer. You see the limit for uploads is 50 KiBps, and that hovers around there when not interrupted. You also see temporary drop-outs of the connection. The second picture shows 1 hour of data transfer, peaking with downloads up to 93 KiBps and uploads hovering around 50 KiBps.So you see in this graph the download is highly variable but the upload is relatively constan
andyjc67 Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 the broadband i have 8mb download with 720kb upload limit and unlimited ussage which they say is not capped
jewelisheaven Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 So your graph is hovering ~ 80 KiBps then? What is your upload limit set at? Can you check your download for 2-5 minutes while downloading http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ ? If it can reach 5-600 KiBps in uT, then the problem lies with the swarms and the peers not being able to stay connected. Trying to get around this with Ctrl-P -> BitTorrent "Forced" Encryption and "disallow legacy connections" would be the next step... Does it help?
andyjc67 Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 no i have 8mb dowload subscibed with bti am still only getting 11.6kb download speed
Switeck Posted January 30, 2008 Report Posted January 30, 2008 British Telecom Central (BT Central for short) throttles BitTorrent traffic heavily during peak evening hours...roughly about 4 PM to midnight. During those times, download speeds are probably limited to 15 KiloBYTES/sec MAX counting overheads. But what are your upload speeds doing, both during peak hours and other times of the day?If upload speeds are higher than download speeds, then this suggest possible other problems as well!
