Very, Very strange speed issue with Verizon Fios

Hello everyone. I currently have Verizon Fios fiber internet service with a confirmed 30mbit down, 5mbit up connection. I get these speeds 100% consistently as verified by speedtest.net My problem is that when I am downloading and uploading torrents using utorrent, my internet browsing speed is slower than dialup. This is insane for a super quick connection like mine. I also have not downloaded at a higher speed than 260kb even when only downloading one torrent. I initially though that my linksys router was to blame so I wired my pc directly to the internet bypassing the router. The problems still exist and just about nothings changed. I am soo upset and hope you guys can help. Thanks.

First thanks for the write-up:), but I have a feeling you're overloading your connection. Hmm there is no xx/5Mbit option in the Speed Guide. What are your current settings. They should be around 560KiBps upload, which can be divided into no-more-than 187 slots... 13 slots and 13 torrents are a pretty good average of that... of which you can change it to suit your will. If you set your connection to xx/2Mbit does that affect your speeds at all on the torrents you are trying. ALSO to verify you are not being shaped for torrent traffic (in general, or at this specific time) you should try out the OpenOffice or Slackware torrents from the How-To.

Please keep your posts to one thread. As you see in the sticky and searching for WRT* on the forum there's many options available the three most popular that i've heard are Hyper-WRT, DD-WRT, and Tomato... it's all up to personal preference I guess, they're all modified linux kernels. If you really want to know, read around first, then experiment with the firmware but BE SURE to backup the existing one incase something goes wrong. Other questions/problems/concerns? Please report back with your settings, experienced behaviour on the test torrent and additional steps you've taken.

Ok, so I changed the speed guide settings to xxx/2mbit as its closest to what I am looking at. Now my web browsing and speedtest results have increased dramatically. Only problem is that my download speeds have decreased as well prob due to the fact that the software thinks I am just trying to download everything without sharing. This is still pathetic considering that I have fios. What a waste, I should of kept my cable modem. What else do you recommend?

Ok, where can I find the openoffice torrent? I am so down now, maybe I will go from 30/5 mbit to a 20/20 package from verizon as I may benefit from the better upload speeds. I think I will get a better router as well as although the linksys is not totally responsible as my performance is not great even with it disconnected but I do notice that it cannot handle the speeds of my older dlink. Thanks so much.

In the How-To, or from http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/. Since it is homed on multiple servers it will maximize ANY of the speed you've got available. I'd make sure you have some semblance of downloading... If you're big into sharing why not go 20 Mbit synchronous :P Remember those packages are generally only for urban centers, not even suburbs have them yet. I'd check to see what kind of speeds you can see right now. Think about it this way, if they gouge you when you pay 120 a month, how much more do you think they'll gouge you @ 180 a month.
