octagonpeg
I actually did read those posts before I Listed my request....Delete the two files was the listed solution. I did delete the two fiels and then took a oo and aly settings were still way they were before I deleted them. THAT is why I asked for soem additional input. IF I unistall the program, an re-install it, would the settings be as they were originally?I saw a video on UTUBE by someone who himself saw a video by someone else about changng ports, changing other stettings and such, but he had no idea what they meant. I don't either and wonder if I screwed up my settings. so I want to start fresh.I am no an expert so I am asking for help here. I know computers very wellbut this torrent aport, and such is totally alien to me. so a little help please..... Thanks
DreadWingKnight
Was uTorrent running when you deleted the two settings files?
Sikker
What do I do if I do not have these files?- Yes I have read the FAQ, and yes I am looking in the right directory (where my uTorrent installation is), but neither "settings.dat" nor "settings.dat.old" exists (I even did a search for them in my programs directory). My uTorrent is messed up somehow. My internet cannot properly start up new pages, and downloads have become an impossibility. So I really need to have it reset. Also I suspect that setting the "net.max_halfopen" to 50 might be the root of some of the problems. Would the experts here consider this likely? DreadWingKnight
- Yes I have read the FAQ, and yes I am looking in the right directory (where my uTorrent installation is)No you are NOT looking in the right directory.%appdata%\utorrent is where you SHOULD be looking%programfiles%\utorrent is were you are currently looking. Firon
You need to lower net.max_halfopen to 8 or less.
Sikker
Thank you for the replies. I never knew %appdata%\utorrent was a valid path in explorer ... but yes - that was where the files where. Thanks. What exactly are the consequences of having lower net.max_halfopen = 50 (when that odd program the overrides the default windows settings has been applied). Does it screw up something and then what does it actually screw up?
Firon
Lower it to 8. That is why your internet "stops working" when you torrent.
DreadWingKnight
Having it at 50 is just too damn high.Reducing it down to 8 solves the problems caused by MS re-patching the limit.uT's default is 8. Reducing the halfopen reduces the ramp-up speed. Over the course of a torrent, it affects about 30-60 seconds of speed.
Switeck
It may even INCREASE download time in rare cases if your connection's spending so much bandwidth spamming connections instead of trying to download/upload with the ones it's already got. Sikker
Thanks for all the replies. µTorrent is back to normal (before all trackers were dead as well - now they are nice and blue/green), my internet is working again and I am NEVER messing with the settings again ... :-)
