Utorrent stopped downloading & uploading ? Help please !

I've been using utorrent with no problems at all for the past 3-4 months. Originally was using version 1.7.5 . About a month ago was prompted to upgrade to 1.7.6 which I did and everything was still cool and working. Prompted again maybe a couple days ago to upgrade to 1.7.7 which I did. It was about this time stuffed stopped working. The torrents that were active did finish, but everything since then has stopped. At this point, no downloading or uploading is happening. Like other topics in this troubleshooting section, I've picked torrents that have lots of seeds...even picked one torrent that is supposed to be hosted by utorrent itself, and it won't download. At the moment, the torrent I have currently is showing a torrent status of "connection closed by peer". I'de sure appreciate some help on getting this going again... I really miss it ! Update... (keep in mind I'm a "newbie" when it comes to PC's). Tried a couple of the suggestions in other threads here... modifying the DHT settings within Utorrent, removing Utorrent from my Windows Firewall, readding it back in, but no difference.

Tried uninstalling Utorrent, redownloaded version 1.7.7 and installed... still no difference...

One user said he had luck using "bitcomet". So I downloaded and installed it, and it too is acting the same way as Utorrent... the torrent just sits there showing 0 (0) peers and 0 (0) seeds.

I'm running Vista Home Premium. My PC came bundled with Norton IS, but I've never done anything at all with it... (it's out of date). My modem is a Zoom ADSL X5 that was configured by my ISP .

Can any of the more knowledgeable folks (or the administrator) offer some step-by-step instructions I can try that can be followed by a newbie like myself ? This issue started when I upgraded to the 1.7.7 version of Utorrent...and reading the other threads here, it looks like A LOT of us are having similar issues. Everything else on my PC appears to be working fine.

To the administrator than commented on the file I was trying to download that was supposed to be hosted by Utorrent... I'de have to dig back through the pages where I found it... it might have been a Mininova file that they host directly... but the webpage indicated it was a good file to "test" with to make sure other generic torrents would download.

Lastly, one thing that's nagging in the back of my brain... a week, maybe two weeks ago while browsing Mininova (I think I was hunting for <movie1> or <movie2>) and reading comments, one person commented a warning to avoid the torrent because there was something in it that would change a setting on your PC that would effectively stop all downloading and uploading.... which of course is what alot of us are experiencing. It was passing comment that I really didn't make note of, but I know I read it. I'll have to go back to all the torrents and see if I can find that comment again. Don't know if it's related... I'm kinda grasping at straws as I'm not sure where to turn to next.

Anyone ?

Hey all,

I have the exact same problem. Everything fine, until I decide to update to 1.7.7. Then everything stops.

The only change was the upgrade, so that cuts through a lot of issues, I guess.

Anyone else fix this problem yet?

Vista, working over a Linksys router with DSL. Like I said, everything was working fine (actually in the middle of a download) when I upgraded, then nothing.

Yes, same problem for this torrent newbie ... "Everything fine, until I decide to update to 1.7.7" and "the torrent just sits there showing 0 (0) peers and 0 (0) seeds".

I don't remember the sequence of clicks, but I got a message that I needed to fix or setup port forwarding. I got to www.portforward.com/... and a section on uTorrent that showed screens for vers 1.2.

I did not think to find out why I needed vers 1.7.7 before upgrading to it. I have uTorrent-1.6-install.exe and will go back to that.

Thanks for this forum.

Hello Firon,

I uninstalled the 6month trial version of Norton IS that I mentioned in my earlier posting (but keep in mind this was not an issue before I upgraded to Utorrent 1.7.7).

I also uninstalled the Bitcomet (which also wasn't working), and again uninstalled utorrent. Re-downloaded utorrent 1.7.7 (again) and absolutely nothing has changed... still shows 0 (0) seeds and 0 (0) peers. I tested the port forwarding at it was OK.

So at this point, I've lost the 90 days of Norton IS that still remained, and still no ability to get utorrent working.

What else can I try ?

Just tried it... no change. 0 (0) seeds, 0 (0) peers. The download arrow is "red". There are four trackers for this torrent... as it rolls through each one, the tracker status is "connection closed by peer".

Headin' to bed now.

Remember, I'm a newbie... can you post the steps required to generate the "highjackthis" log ?

I'm not really a believer in coincidence... since my problems started with 1.7.7 (same as all these other folks posting similiar problems), it seems unlikely to me that my ISP would choose that exact moment to start blocking peer-to-peer traffic. I'll contact them Monday, but I'm sure they are not blocking anything...

Another thing that's nagging me, is that my gut tells that there was a "comment" post on one of the torrents (movie or music, I can't recall), but I seem to recall the comment mentioned the TCPIP.SYS file being affected, resulting in no uploading or downloading. I can't find the torrent anymore (maybe you folks have the ability to search for a string in all the comments to find it ?)... What is the TCPIP.SYS file and what does it do ? Is there anything in the 'register' that could cause this that I could check for you ?

... Do you recognize this "mouse suite" entry C:\Windows\System32\ico.exe? C:\Windows\System32\Pelmiced.exe looks like mal/ad/crap-ware.

You sure that Lenovo Client Security doesn't mess with internet packets? "Security" suggests it provies firewall-like features, which of course need to be configured to allow uT through.

...And that's not even counting the http://utorrent.com/faq.php#Incompatible_software on your computer.

Posted

I'm guessing the "mouse-suite" came with the machine when I bought it...don't know what it is otherwise.

The "Lenova Client Security" also came bundled on the PC... but like the mouse-suite above, it was all on there and utorrent was working prior to the 1.7.7 update.

You also mentioned some "incompatible software" on my machine... I followed the link, but it gave no real insight. What are software are you seeing that's incompatible. I haven't downloaded any new software recently, other than after utorrent stopped working and my attempts to get it going again.

Joe

p.s. I just reviewed what is under Lenova Client Security and it's all little stuff like passwords, screen-savers, etc. Small stuff... nothing that would be dealing with firewalls or anything utorrent would utilize.

p.p.s. The "PELMICED.EXE" you mentioned above is for the scroll button on my mouse... why do you think it is something harmful ? Same for the ICE.EXE, it is also related to my mouse.

Hello --

I solved the "nothing is happening" problem by

1 - uninstalling uTorrent

2 - deleting all instances of "utorrent" in the registry

3 - re-installing uTorrent 1.7.7

Downloading works now.

L Mehl
