bionicone Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 ____________________UPDATE____________________________________I think torrenting is running fine now, i just cannot find a good torrent to run, ill keep everyone posted with my problems and such.... xDCurrent torrent speed now 668.1kbps.... so maybe this router is working good __________________________________________________________________I currently upgraded to Comcast High Speed internet ( 8.0 mbps) and for the first few days I had to run directly connected my my pc because my old router was not compatible with the new internet connect I had... torrenting was great I ran at 200kbps-800kbps all the time. The I got a new router ( Linksys54G) and Torrenting sucked... I couldn't torrent more then 10kbps... I found the thing on the forum about the Firmware and such and I was like oh no so i traded it in for my new router (D-Link WBR-2310) sadly the torrent speeds aren't much better now, im running at roughly 20-60kbps now and thats still far lower then I feel it should be.When i check to see if the port is working ( here http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=34741) i get an error, this is for every port i have tried, no less then 30 ports(forwarding them all))Any ideas?Just so we can get passed the retard questionsYes i did port forward and everything. and i did give myself a static ipThanks for reading and I hope i can fix this.
jewelisheaven Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I think you'd have gone better to stay with the 54G, the firmwares are alternative for a reason, AND they add features to boot. You need to make sure the router is working with your correct PORT (Ctrl-G) to your correct IP (start->run->cmd /k ipconfig /all). If you go back to directly connecting the modem to your computer do you get the same speeds as before. Theoretical maximum for 8 Mbit down is ~ 800 KiBps so that's pretty nice. You can check with http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ to be sure you've not been put on shaping profiles or a limited plan due to usage.
bionicone Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 Well torrenting the file you link, im currently torrenting at 200kbps, so thats cool...The thing about the 54G is that im not the only one that uses the router and having it down for even more then 15 minutes would make my fathers company lose several hundreds of dollars. I was about to change the firmware but i was nerves so i didn't. I dont have a limited plan due to usage.... yet ( only had it 4 days)
jewelisheaven Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Ahh, indeed it's best to setup testing systems out of production. What that does suggest is that when the peers can sustain it, your line does not get worse than 2 Mbit download with torrents. Since you're using a business line and it's shared I would also recommend checking out Ctrl-P -> Scheduler options to make uT not run 24/7. It's kinda rude for you to ALWAYS be leeching data off a line you're not paying for Due to the necessity for having a LAN behind a single IP, a router is commonplace these days, but without some independent verification re-checking torrenting speeds without the router, you'll have to check online to see what's slowing it down.
Firon Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 lol, your dad should be using something way more reliable (like a cisco IOS router) if he'd lose that much money. In fact, he shouldn't have anything at all depending on a standard home connection
jewelisheaven Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Be nice Firon. Many businesses start out on home connections... static home connections usually, but without a large enough demand for a web presence and without enough need to pump out data (read as: storage or download links) why can't it. Cisco routers ... there's a reason they're not called consumer
bionicone Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 well first I would like to say thanks for all the information , the reason we are on a lower grade connection is because we run the business out of the home and Comcast will not provide a better connection for are area... and my dad is to cheap for 12mb lol. I could get free Cisco routers( older routers) from my cisco program at school but I don't want to get on the teachers bad side if she finds out. Just for an FYI, im cisco certified and not only am I torrenting for my pleasure but I am torrenting and learning other routing technique's for a future career. any advice for increasing my torrent speeds would be good. (also can someone find me a good Crysis torrent =D i cannot find one i torrent well) xD
Firon Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Well, the problem with 54G routers is that they keep track of dead connections for too long, so they end up slowing down/crashing with torrents. That's why the third party firmware is required.
bionicone Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 Well everyone, I was just looking at my Loval Area Connection and it States IPV6 is limited, i dont think that is correct, should it be limited or not? and if not how can i change that?
