timcupery Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 My question is about how uTorrent handles torrents with separate individual files.I'm downloading a torrent of the individual-files-in-a-folder variety, and it's 99.5% completed with no more seeders for two days. When I look at download progress in the "files" tab in uTorrent's bottom window, it shows that all but one of the files have fully downloaded, the remaining 0.5% of the torrent that hasn't yet finished downloading is all from only one of the files. All but one of the files displays as an unbroken blue line, while the one file that hasn't finished downloading has some spots marked in red, showing the portions of the file that haven't finished downloading. However, I can't open any of the files from the torrent, the computer programs associated with the filetypes simply can't read those files. I've tried copying the files to another directory, and even onto my USB-key and opening on another computer, in case there's some sort of access-limitation.Is there any finalizing-of-files that uTorrent does after downloading an entire torrent, such that none of the files will be readable until uTorrent has finalized the download of the entire group?Or, are the files in the torrent simply corrupted and wouldn't be readable even if/when the last 0.5% of the torrent completes? Thanks for any help here.
jewelisheaven Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 The Files under the Files tab that don't say 100% aren't finished yet and can't be opened. Copying complete files removes any access uT has on them but it doesn't make them complete and playable.
timcupery Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 Sorry, I could have been a bit more clear, with more info, in my previous post.jewelishheaven - I'm talking specifically about files that show 100% downloaded under the files tab - the % column says 100% along with the display being an unbroken blue line.Ultima - I've tried fully exiting uTorrent, but the files can't be read even after restarting my computer. So my problem is that there are some files that uTorrent says are 100% downloaded, but nonetheless cannot be read by programs that read that file type. With one of these torrents where I've experienced such issues, there a small text file that is 100% downloaded and CAN be read, but other, larger files that are also 100% downloaded can't be read. This has happened to me with multiple torrents, as well. But I've also encountered other torrents where I can open an individual file cleanly once it's 100% downloaded, while the torrent as a whole is still unfinished. So there's not a consistent pattern here, and I'm lost as to what's going on.
jewelisheaven Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Got any media indexers running? or "desktop search" engines?
timcupery Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 No special indexers (e.g., Google Desktop). Although I believe that my hard drive is setup (under WinXP) to "index files for faster searching." I think if this were the problem, I should still be able to copy the files to another volume or usb key and open them there, but even when I do that the files that are 100% downloaded are still unreadable.
jewelisheaven Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 The best way to check from here would be a HiJackThis log.
timcupery Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 Would I need to re-download everything in order to view such a log? Or can I go in and check retroactively?
CZroe Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Is it possible that you downloaded a fake or "dummy" torrent meant to waste your time and bandwidth? Are there any comments on the torrent?
Ultima Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 @timcupery: HijackThis generates a log any time you choose to generate one, so a reinstall/redownload won't be necessary.
