andromedaglxy Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 I have utorrent 1.7.7 and today for the first time it says disk overload at 100% so I came in here and read the faq's and it said to change the cache size which I have done but it seems the larger the number I put in the fuller it gets? What should I do?
jewelisheaven Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 The disk cache uses RAM as additional buffer to accomodate a slower disk. Can youcheck your Device Manager for your IDE/ATA/SCSI hard drive controllers to check for "current transfer mode"?? It should NOT be PIO.. if it is, it has to be changed back to DMA(x).
andromedaglxy Posted February 12, 2008 Author Report Posted February 12, 2008 Thanks for your help. I just checked and DMA is turned on. Any other thoughts?
Ultima Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 What kind of drive are you transferring data on? What does your disk cache settings page look like?
andromedaglxy Posted February 12, 2008 Author Report Posted February 12, 2008 I don't know what kind of drive I'm pretty dumb with these things. How do I find out? I have it set at 600 right now and its using 596 and still increasing. Every box is chceked right now, I have been changing them to see if it made a difference.
Ultima Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#How_do_I_modify_the_disk_cache_options.3FYou haven't read the FAQ carefully enough. Nowhere in the FAQ does it say that you should check every single option. The main problem-causer: write out finished pieces immediately. Disable it.
andromedaglxy Posted February 12, 2008 Author Report Posted February 12, 2008 Ok I re-read the troubleshooting and I have disabled write out untouched blocks, write out finished pieces immediately, and remove old blocks from the cache. I also changed the setting to 800 now and it is still increasing and it at 669 at the moment.
Ultima Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, File > Save, save the file, open, copy and paste here.

jewelisheaven Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 I'm sorry but WHAT is increasing? uT memory usage will increase XX MB in addition to base RAM usage for the cache. Check the Speed tab Disk Statistics to see how much of the RAM reported in Windows Task Manager is actually the disk cache.
