werni
I've been using uTorrent for some months and I've never seen anything like that.Today when I looked at list of connections (I don't have an english version - I just mean the second tab in the lower part of screen) I saw a host with my hostname (the one I set in windows) connected to me and downloading. I'm connected to internet through LAN.I'm thinking whether that happened because someone from inside my LAN connected with my uTorrent but is it a good guessing? He was dowloading a file wanted only by few hundreds or thousands of people over the entire internet.I hope I didn't replicate any old topic.I enclose logs made by HijackThis and Process Explorer. If anybody is interested I may send him a list of connections at that time and even a screenshot (I didn't enclosed them because of issues of privacy - mine and connected ones). My version is 1.7.7 .I. jewelisheaven
If you turn OFF "resolve IP"... in Peers tab, at bottom of right-click context menu is the IP from your LAN?? For ex: 192.168.0.XXX ? DNS isn't really that important. I'm not sure how they were able to spoof your DNS, but it really isn't a big problem In your process list, other than the extra DNS servers... you have a nice Server 2K3 SP2 machine (man I haven't touched sk3 since RTM ><)
werni
Thanks for hint.I'd really love to see that host's IP but described situation didn't happen again So I'm still watching my peers list and hope that if it recures I'll be there
pabouk
I am not sure if it is good idea to revive this old thread but I have come across the same problem and I have an explanation for the occurrence I observed. In the list of peers I have seen my own hostname (FQDN). My IP address is private! The IP address of the peer 222.253.85.10 has nothing to do with my IP addresses (private and public). Then I realised that the IP address resolves to "localhost" in reverse DNS!http://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslookup?la=en&host=222.253.85.10&submit=ResolveDNSWatch > Reverse DNS Lookup for 222.253.85.10Searching for 10.85.253.222.in-addr.arpa. It seems that this trick could be used for example for bypassing SMTP MTA anti-relay control and sending spam.I think it is a bug in uTorrrent that it rewrites localhost retrieved by reverse DNS lookup to my FQDN. It is certainly wrong and misleading in the described case.pabouk
DreadWingKnight
It's just a misconfiguration in the DNS server.Malicious or not is another debate.
pabouk
The IP address belongs to IP ranges of known Vietnamese spam sources. See http://www.h-online.com/security/Naming-trick-opens-mail-servers--/news/113946What about the bug in µTorrent which incorrectly translates "localhost" from reverse DNS lookup to my host FQDN? µTorrent should probably show just the IP address or some notification like "wrong DNS record" when there is an incorrect reverse DNS record. Anyway I think that it would be better if µTorrent stops trying to translate the names form reverse DNS lookup. The problem was observed on the last but one build of µTorrent 2.0 - build 16407. pabouk
The workaround is clear.I just thought that someone would be interested in listing it as a known bug though minor one so excuse me for troubling
moogly
Not a bug. uT displays what the DNS server says.
