funkjunkie
I installed uTorrent today and have spent a considerable amount of time trying to get it to work. My problem is that I have not been able to get port-forwarding to work.I first tried to manually port-forward, but all my attempts have been unsuccessful. I set up a static IP address, and followed all instructions from portforward.com, but nothing seemed to work. I have the free version of ZoneAlarm firewall on my computer, so I disabled it thinking it may be blocking traffic, but this made no difference.I then tried to use uPnP instead. My Netgear router now shows my IP address and port used by uTorrent on its uPnP settings, but still when I do the uTorrent port-forward check it says the port is not open. The status light at the bottom of uTorrent is yellow, although it turned red once.I am running Windows XP, and have a wireless connection. The connection is through D-LINK DSL-302G and Netgear WGR-614v7. Before you tell me I shouldn't have 2 routers, it was set up by my flatmate. And uTorrent works fine for her, although she got a computer-literate friend to set it up for her. She uses uPnP.Anyone have any bright ideas as to why it's not happening for me? DreadWingKnight
I have the free version of ZoneAlarm firewall on my computer, so I disabled it thinking it may be blocking traffic, but this made no difference. Its hooks are still there until and unless you actually uninstall it.UPnP can only forward ports in the router nearest to your machine. Any routers farther out than that MUST be manually configured.
funkjunkie
I have fiddled with the settings of both the routers... tried a lot of combinations of settings... but what I don't understand is why I can't get it to work when someone else using the same internet connection is able to. jewelisheaven
Computers are different.. they have different setups. Have you compared a Process Explorer or HiJackThis logs between them? The setup on the router would be similar... forward PORT to IP, simple. But the PORT and IP MUST differ if both computers are to use the router simultaneously. funkjunkie
I am trying again to manually port-forward. I just cannot get the port to open! I really have no idea why it's not working. I uninstalled Zonealarm, and made sure that windows firewall listed utorrent as an exception, and also instructed it to have my chosen port as an exception. I configured the portforwarding on both routers, and still it's not working. I made sure that the ports and IP addresses of the other computer using uTorrent are different. Firon
Being behind two routers is a pain.Your best bet is to set the first router to act as a switch, then only have the other router working as a router.
funkjunkie
Yea... I'm sure that this is my problem, but I haven't been able to fix it. I was told by my flatmate that the DLINK router "does nothing" (in her words) so I assumed it was Bridging... I'm not so sure this is the case now though (I'm certainly not much of a computer expert, but I'm fairly sure after looking at the settings and trying to decipher them that both routers are doing a job). I tried to set up chain port-forwarding but still no luck. I may have to get her computer-literate friend to come and set me up. I'm just frustrated that I haven't been able to do it myself And I don't want to fiddle too much as I may stuff up the internet for my flatmates.UPDATE...Finally got chain portforwarding to work, and it's going now.
