Connection Problems, from green to yellow and now red...

First off, the stats:

Router: WRT54G v3 (FAQ read)

Firmware: DD-WRT v23 SP2 (changes made as shown in FAQ)

Modem: Motorola Surfboard (WAN IP doesn't appear to be "neutered")

OS: XP Home SP2

ISP: Eastlink Cable, 3000/500 based on tests. (Yes it's one of the "bad" ISPs, but I ahven't had problems for 7 months until now.

Static IP: Yes, outside of the DHCP range.

Ports Forwarded: Router says they are, and I know it's to the right computer, but it the utor status still goes to red.

Firewall: No software firewalls (Windows Firewall service is disabled), router firewall active

AV: AVG free (latest versions of Ad-AwareSE Personal, SpybotS&D, Security Task Manager also installed)

utorrent settings

Speed Guide: xx/378K

Encryption: ON, with Legacy transmissions accepted

Port Checker: says nothing is open, when Im connected through the router, or straight into the modem. Every port I try is red.

net.max_halfopen: 8

I've searched through the forums for my router, and tried to various solutions to no avail. The problem started when I added in an additional port forward; my previous ports stopped working right after while the new one worked. I've since removed the new one, and tried numerous ports with no positive results.

- I've rebooted the modem, the router, and my computer. nothing.

- I've upgraded my router firmware, first with Linksys, then DD-WRT (+settings), nothing.

- I've plugged directly into the modem, and all ports are still red, along with my utorrent status.

- I've disabled UPnP, and NAT in utorrent while connected directly to the modem, no help.

(One other thing is that whenever I try to "Repair" my LAN connection through Windows, it can't clear the DNScache. Not sure if this is needed or not, but it too only started happening recently)

OpenOffice Torrent Speeds:

35(43) Seeds, 1(445)Peers, 360KB/s down, 1KB/s up.

Any other suggestions?

EDIT2:

One thing I am just noticing as I continue to poke around router settings is that according the Sys-Info tab of the DD-WRT, my computer is still under DCHP, and under 192.168.1.110. But, I've set up my static IP to 192.168.1.155, and ipconfig shows my IP as such.

So, I tried changing the IP address in the port forward from 155 to 110, just to see, but no, still nothing. I also made sure to reboot my router through the Admin tab after reseting the forward - my IP still says im under DHCP at 110, rather than 155. Now I'm just lost...

I've plugged directly into the modem, and all ports are still red, along with my utorrent status.

This is probably more worrisome than the DHCP vs static IP address issue (for now, anyway). When it comes down to this, it's either a problem with some filtering on your computer (like a software firewall), or the modem. Since you said you don't have any firewall installed, I'm inclined to believe the modem is being retarded, even if it's not behaving exactly like the portforward.com forum post describes (LAN IPs et al).

Just so we can (attempt to) eliminate possibilties...

a) get HijackThis from trendsecure.com, run it, view the log, and post the contents here

B) get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, Ctrl+D (to show the lower DLL pane), select the µTorrent process from the list, Ctrl+S (and save the list somewhere you'll find easily -- like the Desktop), then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here

Should also note that I haven't seen the Red! lately (started up a few large torrents just to test it), and it's gone back to status yellow. However, none of my ports are saying open still, despite being forwarded. If you suspect the modem, I'll also point out that games where I typically don't have bad latency have had massive ploss lately as well, in case it's relevant.

Thanks for the reply :)

Update 3PM EST Monday:

Well, strangely enough, the problem seems to have corrected itself, which makes me believe you were right and it was all my modem/ISPs fault, rather than any settings to do with utorrent or DD-WRT.

Thanks for the help though Ult

Mm... if you want to avoid future troubles with port forwarding, I'd suggest you ditch the modem. Too many users have problems with the brand/model :/

Glad the problems been narrowed down though! Good luck with the port forwarding issues if you decide to stick with the SurfBoard :)
