Internet Security Programs

Hi,

I've been using McAfee but it completely screws up µtorrent for me, it won't let µtorrent shut down properly.

I have also used Avira and AVG but they have the same effect on µtorrent.

I was hoping if anyone could suggest a good AV program that won't screw up my µtorrent.

AVG isn't security is it? I've only heard of their AV offering (free of course). Are you sure it's not another 3rd party app on the Incompatible Software c/o FAQ? Can you click Ultima's How-To for troubleshooting and go to the bottom where it talks about Process Explorere DLL list and HiJackThis so others can see what else may be causing the troubles?

avast! was the most highly rated freeware app I saw on pcworld.com, loosing points for its "confusing interface", seems fine to me, just don't use P2P shield and anything else you don't need. Kaspersky was the highest rated payware, apparently when tested by another company with the heuristic detection and stuff cranked up it detected the most problems, I liked it a lot. If you use Kaspersky Internet Security though don't use the Web scanner or firewall components. If you need a firewall I think Firon recommends the freeware Comodo for their firewall. I haven't played with it yet. Their beta AV sucks though, µT's alphas were more stable.

Listen to jewelisheaven though, finding other problems will save time, if their are any.

I read all of the guides and troubleshooters, nothing helps. I even uninstalled McAfee completely and ran "naked" (only had windows firewall still up) and still Windows wouldn't let µtorrent shut down properly and that would always result in my files going through the checking process....takes forever.

I don't have enough HJT experience yet to say anything for sure, best to wait for jewelisheaven or Ultima, there are a few things I wouldn't have though like the Google Toolbar, but I don't think those would cause any harm. You didn't post a Process Explorer list with DLL list though :/

get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, Ctrl+D (to show the lower DLL pane), select the µTorrent process from the list, Ctrl+S (and save the list somewhere you'll find easily -- like the Desktop), then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here

DOH! Here's a question I should have asked before. Are you sure it's not just terminating prematurely? By default uT closes after 10 seconds, but due to the changes to checking they added the Ctrl-P -> Advanced option bt.graceful_shutdown which tells uT to wait until everything finishes up to close. Next I'd double check with your current setup with that option enabled if uT goes through checking upon restart. How many torrents do you have running ? People have reported problems with uT holding up due to tracker problems... but I don't know :(

On to the log: Is that Airgo process necessary for your internet to work?? If not I have no clue why it thinks it needs to be a service. Indeed, indeed.. AntiSpyware you say :/ I've never tried it. But I'd imagine as long as it's not showing up in the DLL list it shouldn't be causing troubles. As an aside, do you have intermittent red Torrent Status icons? Have you tried uninstalling this spam fighter? Does it do the same as the avg mail scanner? Whenever one feels the need to have multiple programs which perform the same function, that's a sign they need to cleanup unused programs, in my opinion heh.

The thing with this type of troubleshooting, if it never worked before, it makes most sense removing things until it DOES.... if however there is no problem (the reason for changing the advanced option and checking now...) that means it's not an incompatibility. You dig?

First of all, thank you jewelisheaven and GTHK for your help :)

Ok, that Airgo proces is a part of my wireless LAN i think.(I'm at home but we got 3 computers)

Oh, and I put the gracefull shutdown option on in µtorrent.

Little bit of info, I shut down µtorrent yesterday but I had no torrents in it and it shutdown perfectly so I don't know whats happening and I do indeed sometimes have "red torrent status icons". I'm using(I don't know if I can say this here) Th. P.r.t. B.y as a tracker. :P

Also, the files I usualy download are pretty big, as in 7-8 GB worth, maybe thats a problem? I dunno, I hope you guys can help me out some more :)

Well, when my µtorrent is completely empty (e.g. no torrents downloading or seeding) µtorrent shutsdown properly but when I'm downloading a file, µtorrent doesn't shutdown properly and windows gives me a "Program is not responding" error. At this point I can only choose between "Cancel" and "End now", both of which screw up µtorrent.

If I choose either one it takes µtorrent 5min+ to shutdown IF it shutsdown at all...sometimes I just have to press the reset button.

Quick question:

Downloading torrent files to an external Drive wouldn't cause this problem right?

µtorrent is under my C:\ but I download to my F:\ (which is the external drive).

Hmm. K that makes sense. When no torrents are in there there is no internet activity. If one of these other apps is monitoring internet activity something could be choking up the close :/

WHERE you save data shouldn't matter... but it's easy to test . If you save to the internal drive does the freeze still occur?

See, the fact uT DOES close after a time means it's not the problem of uT but something still in there.

Make another Process Explorer DLL list please. Are both SpamFighter and IDM no longer in there?

Well bully. Good, the onlything which shouldn't be there is that creative thing, but i guess it's harmless.

Hmm you run your windows on a separate c: partition from your programs? How organized :D

It's about time to start->run->services.msc and turn off avg i guess ? Also be sure spamfighter is no longer there. Sorry but I'm stumped.

OK, we're getting somewhere....I hope.

Anyways, µtorrent just shutdown properly and my files resumed their downloads like good files would.

The things I did were:

*Turning of AVG in the services.msc

*downloading those files to my D:\ (not the external one)

I don't know what did the trick but I'm not one to complain, gonna test this out some more.

Anyways, thank you GTHK, DreadWingKnight and espescialy jewelisheaven for sticking with for as long as you have, apreciate it :)

will keep you updated on what happens next ;)

Edit:

Ready to LOL?

Ok,it seems like it was my External Drive that was screwing up µtorrent because I just rebooted again while some files were downloading to my D:\ (F:\ being the external one) and when I logged back on, TADA, al was fine...and AVG was still running(didn't turn it off in services.msc).

The funny part being....it took me 3 days to figure that out....haha, please shoot me.

If anyone ever again has a problem like this...let em sweat for 3 days =D
