Slow connection to internet

I am using ADSL modem 1.5 Mpbs. I am downloading 2 files with uTorrent,

Download average 485B/s Max 42KB/s

Upload average 430B/s Max 40KB/s These figures are from Bandwidth monitor.

My connection to the internet web pages has become very slow as compared to previously. For example I go to web site of a newspaper, this takes a few seconds, and going from page to page at 6 seconds or longer. Previously it was almost instantaneous. I don't at this moment want to stop my downloads as it has been 5 days waiting for any peers!! I am using Windows 98se and MS Internet Explorer 6..

Can this problem have anything to do with the downloading of files? The server says it is alright at their end. If any one can help I will be very grateful.

How many connections per torrent and global connections are you allowing?

Win 98SE is limited to 100 connections -- and that counts all attempting connections, incoming connections, and stable connections towards that 100 limit.

Exceed 100, and Win 98SE will start crawling.

Don't be so pasimistic... I have it set to 500 (400 of them to uT) , and I don't complain... It has more to do with the PC-CPU then the OS, and I have a slow PIII ...

Are you behind a router ? shared Internet using ICS ?

Windows98se. Pentium 4.

In addition I listen to streaming music program from USA (VivaLaVoce.com) and it keeps on being disconnected, This has only happened recently. at the same time as the difficulty with the internet. No router no shared internet.

And I am only downloading 2 torrents at the same time.
