fluxiontech
I dont think it slows down anything but I could be wrong
DutchDude
PG is a great tool... and it doesn't really slow you down a lot... but ... there is a drawback... it doesn't block other communications except TCP based.... so don't think you're protected ... UDP (and other traffic) will not be checked.... so as long as TCP is the protocol you are using for downloading/uploading you ***might*** be a little safe.... no guarantees though.... Jioxer
Heh.If it doesnt protect UDP and TCP then.. forget it.
Firon
PG2 blocks every protocol. Even ICMP. http://phoenixlabs.org/
hofshi
is p2p the only relevent block list for µtorrent users?
Firon
I use Government, P2P, and Bogon ( http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/bogon.txt )
hofshi
I'm new to PG, can you elaborate on what these additonal two lists do?meanwhile I only have PG running for two days, with the p2p list. I also allowed for it to connect to Zonelabs since I'm running the ZA firewall, but I'm not sure if I should or shouldn't have done so.as I've said - I'm new to this...thanks. Firon
Government is IPs of various government institutions, and Bogon is IPs that aren't supposed to be in use (not every IPv4 address block is actually assigned, like 20% or something is not). If bogon shows up, it's probably someone spoofing
hofshi
Thank you,so for bittorrent stuff I should have all these three blocklists?
Ultima
If you like to stay a little closer to the safe side, then yeah. Otherwise, P2P should work just fine, I think (heh saying you "should" makes it sound imperative to have those specific lists, which it's not =P)
Firon
P2P alone will be enough, the others are just extra.
hofshi
okay, thanks
HoochieMamma
EVERYONE should use Peerguardian, it stops you from downloading corrupt data from anti-p2p organisation, plus stops you from giving out good data to them. Just remember to enable "Allow http" and only need to use the P2P list (you can also set it to auto update every day, startup with windows and hide the icon so you don't have to worry about it). TheBear
I haven't used PeerGuardian in a while as I started using Protowall when PG was going through some issues. How much memory does PG now use while running?
Ultima
I recall having sub-10MB RAM usage, but I believe others in the forum mentioned something around 15MB (if memory serves me right). I haven't used PeerGuardian 2 in a while, though, so my memory's a bit fuzzy.
HoochieMamma
Right now PG (being hidden) is using 1.8 MB of RAM and 7.3MB of Virtual Mem.
spriseris
you might want to consider picking up Protowall or Peerguardian, then using Bluetack's Block List Manager software to generate blocklists. Here's a Block List FAQ on which lists to use if you're interested.I posted this in another message, but this might be helpful to anyone interested. I use Peerguardian2 with Bluetack's blocklist manager. But Peerguardian2 by itself should be probably enough. Using blocklist manager is useful for blocking bogons and a few others that PG doesn't have built in by default.
TheBear
Right now PG (being hidden) is using 1.8 MB of RAM and 7.3MB of Virtual Mem.Is that using the default PG blocklist?
HoochieMamma
Yes. Only the P2P list.
hofshi
@HoochieMamma: can you please explain why "HTTP" should be allowed, and what exactly the drawbacks are in having "HTTP is blocked" as it is by default?thanks.
boo
I'm using 26 blocklist, 11 of them are custom lists and PG2 only takes 2 MB in ram and less than 1% cpu, I have never seen it use full percentage, except when cacheing the blocklists. hofshi
do you block http?
Ultima
If you block HTTP, some websites might get blocked as well. I'd advise you to turn it off, to make life easier.
boo
I advise to have HTTP block turned on.If you get blocks on webpages you trust, right-click on the block in the log window and chose to permently allow the ip or you can also chose to temporary allow the ip.
