Yomi
Someone keeps trying to hack my computer. Norton Antivirus keeps blocking them and alerting me. I've learned that this only happens while I have µTorrent open and running, so I assume they're using it to try to get into my computer. So, my question is, is there any way for me to block all connection to their IP address through µTorrent, or is there at least a way that I can report them? Firon
It's just your firewall giving you a lot of false positives. You should just allow the connections, or tell Norton to shut up about it. Or get a better firewall.
Yomi
I know what you mean, but it's more specific than that. It actually gave me specific times and an IP address of someone who was trying to "intrude" into my computer. It's not something that has happened before. Firon
It's a false positive, dude.
Yomi
Then why, with the hundreds of connections I've made, has this not happened before? If it's my firewall making a mistake, wouldn't it have made it with more than this one person?I actually went back in its history, and it seems that this same IP address has tried numerous times in the past, when I'm sure I had completely different downloads going.Ex. 1 2It doesn't seem like they're just trying to connect with me and Norton is blocking them.My point is that I don't feel comfortable connecting to this IP address, and I just need to know if there's some way that I can block them. I'm sorry for the trouble.
jewelisheaven
If you want to keep from contacting specific IP addresses, that's what the ipfilter.dat is for Many people use it for many things, including blocking access to known malicious peers that waste connection slots or send bad data. http://utorrent.com/faq.php#What_is_ipfilter.dat.3F
Yomi
Thank you. That would help, but there is a bit of a problem. I don't have a program that can create or even read .dat files on my computer. Does that make this impossible?
GTHK
ipfilter.dat, is just a text file, you can open it with notepad.
Yomi
Oh, whoa. I thought I had to make it or something. Is it supposed to be in the data files? If so, I don't have it in there.
jewelisheaven
You create a text file with lines for IP ranges to block. They can be single IPs per line or multiple IPs per line. They must be specified in dotted-decimal notation, no subnetmasking or CIDRFor example, to keep from connecting to yourself (even though uT auto-bans your clientid) you can add:127.0.0.1 #localhost192.168.0.101 #MY IP192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.255 #MY LANNote that all after # is ignored, AND each line must have an entry, a blank line may be postfixed but is not necessary. Yomi
But if I just make a regular text file, won't it be a .txt instead of a .dat, and not work?
GTHK
When saving in notepad.exe, see "Save as type:"? Change it to "All Files" and then use the name "ipfilter.dat".
