ImranM847
I'm using utorrent 1.7.7 on windows vista. I was getting disk overload error and noticed using disk statistics that cache was filling to default 32MB and then displaying disk overload. After increasing disk cache, file will continue to download only to cache size (now 500MB on 2GB RAM). then display disk overload again. Only ~5MB of download is actually being written to disk within first few seconds of download...then nothing. Disk cache settings are all checked except for "write out untouched blocks," "write out finished pieces," and "remove old blocks from cache." Any help would be greatly appreciated...this issue is new to me and I couldn't find a thread quite like it.
GTHK
Is µT still writing while the cache fills? Disk overload usually means something on the computer is transfering data to the drive too slow. What kind of drive are you using? I suppose you could try increasing the cache more and see if it buys enough time for you drive.
jewelisheaven
Write out finished pieces will not stop uT from writing to disk... unless there is some other software involved. It changed the dump data mechanic to work every 20 seconds. This reduces load on the hard drive... but may increase RAM usage in the interim. To solve the Disk Overload problem be sure your hard drive controllers (Device Manager from System Properties) is set to UDMA mode, not PIO. You may need to remove the controller and reinstall it and reboot for it to take effect.
Firon
Re-enable write out finished pieces.
joeykrim
I had this exact same problem on my brand new laptop running Vista and uTorrent 1.7.7. I tried all sorts of settings and eventually ended up with disk overload or it filling up the cache and not writing out. I've updated to the 1.8beta and disabled Windows cache. Fixed the problem! Just my two cents from my personal experience.
ImranM847
I have now enabled "write finished pieces," but no change. The downloads will still continue, but only writing to cache, not to disk. Disk is UDMA already. The overload issue is not the hard disk not keeping up to speed, I'm assuming its because the cache fills and the disk is never written to. This creates the same error as if the disk was too slow, right? Thanks to everyone for their input. Any other ideas?

GTHK
Nero Scout and Google Desktop are known to interfere with file operations, try disabling them and see if that fixes it.
ImranM847
Google Desktop is a greedy bitch...Killed that and everything works fine! Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the help. GTHK, the cache is dumping to disk as we speak.
Decio
Hi there,I've always used utorrent and since I've started using seedboxes I have the occasional disk overload problem which I assume has to do with crappy HDDs. Until now capping my download speed at reasonable levels, specially when downloading very large files and increasing disk cache a bit has managed to keep the situation under control. I recently got a 1 Gbit box though. It's running on Windows 2003 as my previous seedbox. It's completely clean as I've done a reinstall. Right now I'm using Utorrent 1.8.1 but I had the same results with 1.8.2. I just re-downloaded the previous version as it was working fine on my other machine.The difference is that, in this case, I have the exact same problem as the original poster. That's why I used this thread.RAM usage by Utorrent just keeps increasing and parts are not getting writtent to disk. What happens is that I may be downloading at, say, 15 MBs... If a file is small enough there won't be enough time for the Disk Overload message to pop-up but, in fact, almost nothing is being written to the disk. It then stalls at 99.9% and takes an eternity to write all the remaining parts to disk. In practice, it's as if downloading had been done 20 times slower. Oh... and of course all upload completely stops while any file at all ( no matter its size ) is being downloaded. This a brand "new" OVH dedicated server. I haven't instaled anything on it but Utorrent and HijackThis. I really don't know what to do. I tried all the options I have set on my other server. Nothing works.I don't know if this matters cause as I said I didn't install anything on the server but here is a log of hijackthis when Utorrent was running:"Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 10:05:17 AM, on 2/16/2009Platform: Windows 2003 SP2 (WinNT 5.02.3790)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16735)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\copSSH\bin\cygrunsrv.exeC:\Program Files\copSSH\bin\sshd.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\rdpclip.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Programas\Utorrent\utorrent.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Programas\hijackthis_v2.0.2\HijackThis.exeR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = res://shdoclc.dll/softAdmin.htmR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://shdoclc.dll/softAdmin.htmR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = res://shdoclc.dll/softAdmin.htmR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXEO4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-456457572-1154603874-159771370-1004\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SvcCOPSSH')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-456457572-1154603874-159771370-1004\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'SvcCOPSSH')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'SYSTEM')O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'Default user')O16 - DPF: {6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C} (WUWebControl Class) - http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/V5Controls/en/x86/client/wuweb_site.cab?1203702471989O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{39EC4656-0492-4516-A0CD-C42313BCECD5}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{5A092EC2-ECF9-4FB7-8DFF-726F2B3541EB}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{65BB07EC-E711-41D4-9019-507B29CF617C}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{816DD7C2-6E3C-46E0-A1D8-44A52F6676FA}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{84C2E04A-2E1D-4F3C-AF5E-FBD6C950A0F1}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{897BCACA-CC2E-43ED-B9FD-D8C4FB598349}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8B748694-2551-41D2-B37F-D4232E7798C3}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{93FF0EE6-27E3-42D5-8F2C-3FBBE2A3AFE0}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{ACFDB169-721E-4BA9-9D3E-C89ABFC58FD0}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B9FE3630-1B12-4F04-B8EE-BAD9A29EAD07}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C28C0337-7FAC-48D8-B3B6-7CF6C3EB63ED}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C34C8190-1F59-4760-834B-9E623DC3A24A}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{D5711804-3D6A-45C9-B47B-A1AE42C26702}: NameServer = 213.186.33.99O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{39EC4656-0492-4516-A0CD-C42313BCECD5}: NameServer = 10.48.100.2O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - ATI Technologies Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeO23 - Service: Openssh SSHD (copSSHD) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\copSSH\bin\cygrunsrv.exe--End of file - 4938 bytes"Might this be a faulty HDD?
