Need help opening port

Lost

Recommended Posts

I have tried repeatedly for days to allow uTorrent an open port but no joy. Tried the guides at portfoward multiple times, looked through the forums and am just not getting it. I'm running Vista Business and Comodo 3.02 w/ TDS DSL for a provider.

The router is Asus WL520G, I followed, to the best of my ability, the guides at portfoward

including their Comodo guide. There are some differences between as they are using an older version w/ somewhat different GUI but i think i got it. The router guide seems pretty straight forward, that is after the 10th time, including setting up a static ip. I just took a quick look at your guide and will try using it. One question though, if I exit Comodo does that mean the firewall is not protecting? If so then its not the firewall as i did try that.

Nope, exiting doesn't mean it's not protecting. Uninstalling does. Which brings up a good point... If you're willing to disable the firewall temporarily, can you uninstall Comodo so that we can knock off some potential culprits?

When you set your computer's static IP up, did you set it outside of the router's DHCP range? What mode are you using?

Right now i'm on a different partition using XP, Comodo is on my main partition which is Vista, and Comodo is not in "Remove Programs." Is it still protecting? I used 1 of the IP's indicated by portforward. Not sure what you mean "What mode...?"

If your dual booting, and it's not on Vista, then it's not protecting. Also, you need to make sure the IPA is outside your routers DHCP range. Look for the DHCP range and pick an address outside it, it may also be displayed as a starting number and the number of allowed clients. If you can't find it, try using an address with a high number (200-254) or a low number (2-99).

Hi GTHK and thanks for the help. When you guys say the static address needs to be outside of my routers DHCP i'm kind of w/ you but... So when i look at the DHCP section of the router it says that the pool starts at .........2 and ends at .........254. When i did the static IP exercise on portforward it listed .........136, 137 etc. If i attempt to set a static IP address in the Asus of ........256 it says 255 is the end of the line. I assume that i'm missing something cause that means 192.168.1.255 is the only option. Further down the page for DHCP is a place to assign a manual IP address by entering the MAC address and IP address. I tried this but still no joy. Can you guys shed some more light for me?

Thanks again.

255 is a broadcast address and can't be used. Narrow your DHCP range (either by reducing the number of allowed clients, or entering a range, depending on your hardware), I doubt you have 254 computers set to dynamic ;).

Hmmmmm, are you sure you set the address correctly on both your computer and the router? Can you try bypassing the router as a test, and see if that fixes your problem? And if it doesn't, while bypassing the router, can you try the following websites to see if your modem has some internal configuration?

http://192.168.1.1

http://192.168.1.100

http://192.168.1.254

http://192.168.100.1

http://192.168.100.100

http://192.168.100.254

Ok, some updates. I jacked in directly to the modem still no joy. At work we have Comcst and there I am able to get the green light so it appears to be an issue w/ TDS or my configuring.

In the interim MrSofty hosed my primary partition, which is Vista, w/ a forced update and now I am locked in the endless loop of 3 of 3 0% complete -> reboot ad nausea. I have a strong suspicion this is a deliberate game MS is playing. Oh and just to be clear my Vista is totally legit, came w/ my new Lenovo Z61t.
