Penndarin
Hey, as of late uTorrent, which has always ran great, is slowing my computer down immensely. I don't have any software firewalls and I didn't see anything else in the FAQ section that solved the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, heres my specs:WinXP Pro SP2Intel Pentium D CPU 3GHz2 GB of RAMNVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTHijackThis Results:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 2:00:15 PM, on 4/6/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16608)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXEC:\WINDOWS\CTHELPER.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\CTXFIHLP.EXEC:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG\AirPlusCFG.exeC:\Program Files\ANI\ANIWZCS2 Service\WZCSLDR2.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exeC:\Program Files\Coast to Coast AM Media Center\Coast to Coast AM Media Center.exeC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CTXFISPI.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeG:\Gipetto\SECURITY TOOLS\SPYWARE\ANTI SPYWARE\HijackThis.exeR1 - Ultima
Hm, I don't see anyting immediately suspicious (well, that Creative DLL hooking onto µTorrent is odd, but I don't think it'd cause such problems).Start > Run > devmgmt.mscCheck your primary and secondary IDE ATA/ATAPI controller's properties to see if any of the connected devices' current transfer modes are in PIO. jewelisheaven
:/ Interrupts and not DPCs... I'd try turning off / disabling that creative "media sniffer" and the dlink configurator. It's possible that is conflicting with the built-in windows wireless configurator.ctagent hasn't been fingered for any of these types of usage problems lately even though its injection is .. unexpected. Penndarin
Okay, through msconfig I disabled everything non-essential, mainly the Creative and D-Link stuff. So far, no change. My Primary IDE Channel Properties list Device 0's current transfer mode as "Ultra DMA Mode 4" and Device 1 as "PIO Mode"
GTHK
What are you using on device 1? If it's a hard drive, then there's your problem, PIO uses more CPU, uninstalling the controller and rebooting should kick it back over to DMA/UDMA. Ultima
Regardless of what kind of device it is, PIO is never desirable. Uninstall the controller and restart.
Penndarin
Works great now, thanks a lot. For future reference, what would cause that setting to change on it's own? It wasn't originally like that.
GTHK
I think jewelisheaven wrote that it changes to PIO if there six errors occur, or something like that.
jewelisheaven
It sounds like Ultima actually. I don't do hardware >< I still run a single core processor as my production machine In any case continually switching to PIO suggests something is going bad either with the controller or the hard drive. I'm thinking any tools with that S.M.A.R.T. capability would help diagnose anything wrong.
Ultima
Indeed. I can't recall whether it's read errors, write errors, or a combination of both that count toward the 6 error limit, but yeah.
jewelisheaven
That's disturbing 500 posts in 2 days on the forum >< Do you recall where you read that from Ultima? I'm guessing it was the MS KB but I looked and didn't find anything.
Penndarin
I'll be sure to run some diagnostics, thanks for all the help everyone.
