db07mufan Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 Hey guys, i've read Martin's post which i dont quite get it wish he could reply here.My line is a 1024kbps DL and 384 kbps ULWhich somewhat translates into 128 kBps DL and 48 kBps upload.I have a Sygate firewall and done all portforwarding, and my Network is OK.I just wnat to ask the optimum settings i should put at...Currently it is atMax UL : 33kBpsMAX DL: 102kBpsGlobal Max Connection : 384Max number peers connected to torrent: 200number of upload slots per torrent : 10what should i set them for, currently im downloading a file with decent seeders 26 seeders 44/100 peersbut the speed i get is around 40kBps download which fluctuates -+3kBps while my upload is stable at around 32kBps.What can be done to increase my speed as it is currently at almost half of its capability.Looking forward to your comments, and thank you µtorrent for making this great software!
Firon Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 Lower your connections/torrent to 75, upload slots to 5.
db07mufan Posted December 23, 2005 Author Report Posted December 23, 2005 thanks, i still get the pathetic download speed.. geez..
Switeck Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Lower your connections per torrent to only 40.Lower uploads slots to 4 (check the allow more upload slots box).Disable DHT.Raise your upload speed 1 KB/sec at a time all the way up to 42 KB/sec and test at each 1 KB/sec interval. You should find a 'sweet spot' which results in the fastest download speeds -- though you may want to reduce upload speed by 1-3 KB/sec below that value if it causes any web surfing slowdowns.
Martin Levac Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 My connection is 6.5mb/900kb cable. Actual max download/upload I've seen on my connection is about 720kB/s DL and 110kB/s UL. I rarely reach max DL but I can usually reach max UL. The highest DL speeds I've ever seen on any torrent is about 350kB/s and that was on very large swarms (more than 5000 peers). I usually get between 70kB/s-150kB/s. That's why I only look at upload speed to determine utorrent settings.Set upload to 70% of your hardware capacity. Set upload slots to give 5kB/s per slot. Set max peers per torrent to 10x upload slots. Yes, disable DHT because it uses 4kB/s by default so you can use that 4k for data instead. Global max is only relevant if you have more than one torrent active so set it to equal or greater than max peers per torrent. Limiting your download is only useful if you actually reach your max download capacity to prevent it from affecting your upload speed back and forth but it's a good idea to monitor it once in a while just in case it does.Your connection: 1024/384 (128kB/48kB)My suggestion:Max UL: 30-35UL slots: 5-7Max peers: 50-100I would also follow Switeck's suggestions to find the sweet spot. Your goal should be to get the highest consistent upload speed (flatline at the limit) and a higher download speed.ML
tonic Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Martin Levac do you mind share your utorrent settings for Port#, Global max connections, Max connection per torrent and diskio.write_queue_size? Thank you
db07mufan Posted December 26, 2005 Author Report Posted December 26, 2005 thanks, yeah martin, perhaps you could share all of your settings for easy reference..Anyways ive tried some tinkering to what martin said, and when i download the POPULAR torrent the win32 install exe, i get 90kbps average which is what im expecting but sadly im uploading at almost 0, 0.1 and 0 respectively.but when i swith to my other torrent the download is at 0kbps and 0.1 up and down, then upload is otherwise at max which is around 40kbps minimally. It has decent seeds around 10+ with 28 peers. What has happened?

1c3d0g Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 db07mufan: set peer.lazy_bitfield = *true in Advanced Options... :/
jroc Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 @Switeck:Add Starpower/RCN to that list, too. But the latest 2-3 versions of uT works wonders. Might be the port im using too that helps. And the thing is, Im not using lazy_bit_field anymore (and I hope I dont have to anymore....) But like Ic3 said, try peer.lazy_bitfield and see if it improves.
Martin Levac Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 OK, all other parameters except those mentioned below are set to default. Keep in mind that these settings apply to my connection, 6.5mb/900kb. Also, I use Win2k Pro SP4 + all updates so I have no problem with network connections.Settings for uTorrent ver 1.3:NETWORK OPTIONSPort#: 32459 (never changed it from install)Random: NOuPnP: YES but doesn't do anything in Win2kGlobal max UL: 70Alternate: 100Global max DL: 0IP to report to tracker: empty (I have no router or hardware firewall so I don't need to put in the IP)TORRENT OPTIONSGlobal max: 1000Per Torrent: 500UL slots: 10 (sometimes I vary between 4-16 but I usually leave it at 10)Use additional UL slots if <90%: YESMax UL/DL torrents: 8 (default)Max DL torrent: 2 (I usually DL only 1 at a time)Scraping: YESPre-Allocate: NODHT: YESDHT new: YESADVANCED OPTIONS(only those I have changed from default)net.max_halfopen: 100bt.connect_speed: 100I'm downloading a pretty slow torrent right now, I barely get 70kB/s DL for my 70kB/s UL. Seeds: 26 of 36(38), Peers: 28 of 55(62). There are no fast seeds and there are only 3 or 4 fast peers with which I'm trading continuously since I started this torrent but even then they're slower than me. It looks like I'm the fastest peer in the swarm because I don't get good speeds from any peer or seed. My share ratio has stayed above 1 throughout. It's like everybody is choking their upload speed or limiting their share ratio. I know it's not my connection or the internet (or the tracker, it's Demonoid) that is slow because I just tested with a few openoffice torrents from this website: http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/index.html and I got over 450kB/s DL on the fastest one (all seeds going full speed).ML
Firon Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 for the record, IP to report to tracker is not for people behind NAT, it's for people behind proxies or on the same local network as the tracker ONLYAnd DHT generally uses about .1-.2 KiB/s, not 4. 4 is just the upper limit that it can use.And 500 connections/torrent is WAY too high, lower that to 100.if you patched your TCPIP.sys to 100, your net.max_halfopen should be 70, not 100.
Martin Levac Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Win2k doesn't need a TCPIP.SYS patch, it's WinXP that needs a patch.ML
Firon Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Right. Didn't pay close enough attention.
db07mufan Posted January 8, 2006 Author Report Posted January 8, 2006 what do i add?Starpower/RCN?whats the value
n00binator Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Hey guys heres My speed test results.. any details on how i could tweak uttorrent to get the most out of my connection? As you can see My Upstream is seriously lacking next to my downstream.
jewelisheaven Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Pretty old revival. Setup uT to use 1Mbit. I'm not sure how fast you'll download in uT. But at least on OpenOffice torrents or Slackware torrents it should hit at least 2 MiBps. If not, go through Ultima's How-To for troubleshooting. To make sure you can keep downloading, that fast also put on an uploading torrent, and you make sure as you increase the upload your download does not decrease. That signifies you hitting your upload limit.
