JTOUPS
I currently have a Motorola 2210-02 modem & Linksys wrt54G wireless router. I've set up port forwarding in the past, but I'm having trouble this time for some reason. First question: Which setup guide should I follow? The modem or the router? I have tried both, created static Ip, etc....but still have the same problem. On my end, everything seems to be setup perfect (or so I thought.) When I do the Utorrent check to see if my port is being forwarded (open), I get an error message that my port is not open on my external IP....(which looks nothing like my regular IP or static IP.) I did some research throughout the forums but could put my finger on the problem. When I enter the configuration page on my modem, I actually see the external IP loacated under "WAN IP" Any guides to follow, or idea of what's the problem? Thank you for any help! jewelisheaven
If the port checker is saying something different than your external IP it's possible you're put through a proxy. Is it 10.x.x.x 172.16-172.31.x.x or 192.168.x.x ?If your modem does have router functionality, turn it to bridge mode if possible. This means it stops being a firewall and leaves that to your router. In the event you have TWO routers, you have to 1) forward the port from the internet through the first router correct in/out port/ip and then 2) forward from that router, on the correct in/out port/ip. JTOUPS
I'm not at home right now, but the external address was showing 240.xxx.xxx.xxx (I think) It was definitely a 200 number. The port checker is reading the correct external IP, but shouldn't it say my static IP instead of the external IP? And my static IP is: 192.168.2.136Bridge mode on the motorola router, correct? not the linksys. Also, you said this:"In the event you have TWO routers, you have to 1) forward the port from the internet through the first router correct in/out port/ip and then 2) forward from that router, on the correct in/out port/ip"Is there a guide for this? jewelisheaven
Nope. It doesn't care what your internal IP is. Your address is only relevant one link away. I.e. say you have Internet / ISP -> modem -> router -> computer . For the ISP your IP is 201.2.3.4, ask anyone in the internet what your IP is they reply 201.2.3.4. Your modem has an internal IP address of 10.100.1.2, ask anyone in your local cable network what your IP is they will reply with EITHER 201.2.3.4 or possibly 10.100.1.2 if your router isn't also providing firewall/NAT. But once you get to the router, with the external IP of 10.100.1.2 and internal IP of 192.168.2.136 everything either sees you as 192.168.2.136 (everything on the same LAN segment as you (i.e. connected to the router)) or 201.2.3.4.The uT User Manual covers handling double-NAT http://download.utorrent.com/utorrent-help.zip and there's guides .. I think somewhere on portforward.com there is one as well. The main trick is to eliminate one of the routers... makes things MUCH easier.
JTOUPS
I think I understand what you're saying...But by eliminating a router, you don't actually mean completely disconnecting it & bypassing it right?
jewelisheaven
Set it to bridge mode. That turns one of the devices' router functions back into a hub... or is it a repeater >< Been a decade since OSI training.
JTOUPS
Will I set the modem or router to bridged?
jewelisheaven
If you set the router to bridge you may as well take it out, Try the modem first.
