Longtime torrenter suddenly experiencing a "ghost" firewall

I've been using utorrent for years, portforwading and all through my router with no problems at all, the router is connected to a cable modem with no router funcions. I have windows XP and was running utorrent 1.7.7, everything was fine up until a week ago.

Suddently I found my utorrent not accepting incoming connections (yellow flag). I tried the usual: restarting the router, changing the forwarded ports, etc., with no luck. Then I connected the PC directly to the cable modem, still no connections no matter what port I tried. That is right, I even tried software to check for open ports connected directly to my modem and there are non (at least to that sofware: Superscan)

My windows firewall is off, and I have a norton internet security firewall that allows all utorrent connections, but just in case I turned that firewall off as well. Still no incomming connections. I called my ISP a few times, tried to catch a service guy offguard, but all of them said the same, there is no firewall or service "limiter" on their end...

I have to say, I had a yellow flag but I could still connect to other peers, perhaps not to all of them but to some. My download speed was clearly reduced by this, upload wasnt that affected, but my 128kbps up is crap anyway. After coming to this forum and following ALL troubleshooting guides and hints, and reading similar posts I am convinced my ISP throttles my connection... but I am here in hopes of finding an answer and a solution.

What helped so far, is that I upgraded to utorrent 1.8 beta. Now I dont get a yellow but a red flag, but, connections to peers have increased a lot, and so has my DL speed. So there wouldnt be much reason for me to complain other than the red flag itself, but, I still cant connect to some seeds which sucks when I get an unreachable good-connection seed on a 1-seed/no leechers torrent, and I have to actually find some other people willing to leech, and to whom I can connect, so they serve as a bridge.

Sorry for the long post, if you have any insights or suggestions pelase write them down. Any software I can run to try and debug this problem, anyway I could know if my PC has installed malicious spyware or something that might be acting as a hidden firewall, or anyway I could do to test/confirm if my ISP is really disrupting my torrent connections. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Well firewalls may come with browser toolbars, or bundled in antivirus or other security suites. If you want someone to look at your programs, check out http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992 and follow the procedure for HiJackThis and copy-paste the logfile below.

It's possible I guess the ISP updated the modem's firmware to include a firewall... if you login to it or view the status is there a part which offers "Bridge Mode"? Is it listed @ http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm ? What is your modem make/model. Remember any program-specific firewall rules you made yourself may need to be updated... If you try the old port you forwarded in 1.8 does the red icon go away? Have you tried http://canyouseeme.org also on the old and new ports?

Sometimes it's also useful to try a known working torrent http://slackware.com/torrents/ to see if those peers show up as "I" (incoming) in the Peers tab Flags column.

thanks a lot for taking the time to reply and help. About your suggestions:

> What is your modem make/model?

its a WebSTAR DPC2100 by Scientific Atlanta. It aint listed in the router/firewall list on portforward.com. I access it through http://192.168.100.1/ and there are no configurable options, or at least they have been locked by my ISP, so even though I can see the basic cable modem information, I cant tell if it has a bridge mode or not.

> Have you tried http://canyouseeme.org?

I have, old and new ports that I have tried return the same error, for example the result for port 34900 is:

Error: I could not see your service on [my external IP] on port (34900)

Reason: Connection timed out

No matter what port I try on utorrent 1.8, the red icon stays.

> try a known working torrent to see if those peers show up as "I".

I tried a torrent from http://slackware.com/torrents (ISO disc 1), after a while I am connected to 35/125 seeds and 4/48 other leechers, there are no "I" flags whatsoever, all of them are either D E, D XE, DS E, DS XE, and one UDO XE. This torrent is maxing out my bandwidth (as I guess should be expected).

> follow the procedure for HiJackThis and copy-paste the logfile below.

I got a log from HiJackThis, and another one from Process Explorer as well, they are kind of long but I'll paste them below in separate post replies anyway.... well, I cant double post, so I'll just add HiJackThis's log below.

thanks for looking at this and any other suggestions are welcomed.

Ok, I will try uninstalling Norton... alhough I never had a problem with norton before and I had this system configuration for 2 years now, I havent even upgraded Norton in at least 8 months so I dont really think this could be it, but given I have no other suggestions at the time I'll try it.

jewelisheaven or anyone else, do you see anything weird on my HiJackThis log?

I'm still not getting any incoming connections, download and upload speeds seem to be fine after I upgraded to 1.80. When I still had 1.7.7 speeds were fine after utorrent started, but after few hours all torrents started loosing connections and went into red, couldnt connect to their trackers. With 1.80 that doesnt happen anymore, I dont know if this could shed some light on this case.

"after few hours all torrents started loosing connections and went into red, couldnt connect to their trackers"

...usually means your settings are too aggressive and something is (slowly?) overloading.

Many/most people don't list their ISP when posting problems here, yet many of the speed problems ARE ISP-caused. So doing a search for your ISP, which you yourself never mentioned, turns up little.

Other people on the same ISP have posted here with speed problems before. They too were told by the ISP that there was no throttling going on...or something to that effect. :P

In your HijackThis! log, what's this?:

C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe

That looks like something to do with MCE...

Sorry :( I remembered why I didn't respond immediately. There are differing reports of whether O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OfcpfwSvcs.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\OfcpfwSvcs.exe is BAD-ware. I would double check. And in all honesty, I'd start by turning off some of that stuff on run with start->run->msconfig

You can start with "DISC" and all that suite. I don't think anything from Symantec not labelled as firewall would be running, but you should double check that too.
