Too Long to Download a Block

I use uTorrent 1.7.7. I've noticed that quite often I will get all of the blocks of a piece but one (e.g., 127 out of 128) and that uTorrent will sit there with that one piece showing light blue (download started but not finished) for a very long time even though the block has multiple availability. It will then finally turn the block white (not started) and the quickly rerequest the block, go light blue, and then complete the download.

Is there any way to adjust the timeout that uTorrent waits before it rerequests such a block? It can be most annoying especially when I wind up with a dozen or more pieces in the same state. Thanks for any help.

Not much to do actually. If the availability of that specific piece increases dramatically during the download of it (say it's a 4 MiB piece) it receives less priority. I do know some changes to the piece picker were made for 1.8, but I'm not sure how wide-reaching they are.

I can imagine also this case being valid for situations where the peers are all bottlenecked from a(several) slow seeds... where as each piece is sent out from the seed it rapidly goes from low to high-availability. You can always try out the 1.8 beta from the download page and run it self-contained http://utorrent.com/faq.php#How_can_I_share_my_torrents_between_user_profiles.3F to test it out on a torrent to see if you see any better performance.

Thanks. I did try 1.8 beta, but the fireworks ;) convinced me to go back to 1.7.7. It would be nice if you could point at the offending block in the chart of the piece, click on it, and have uTorrent re-request it (I can just imagine the programmers cringing at that suggestion).

Please help us solve your fireworks problem...so we can get your other problem (piece available but not downloading) solved.

There's a fair chance the problems are related, as the very things that prevents 100% download (often software firewalls and messed-up routers) can also cause fireworks shows.

Fireworks?! Another easter egg... awesome.

Oh you meant something breaking... more description would be useful. And don't be hating on 1.8 just because it's new. When it hits RC it will resolve many if not all outstanding bloating issues uT has... and uses less RAM (% depends on # of torrents loaded).

There are two currently: one relating to window resizing, and one relating to torrent selection.(Both fixed b.10054) 1.8 includes fixes to all previous reported resource leakage. Point being: if you can, upgrade. 1.7 is fine but over time it bloats. Once the window resize leak is done, 1.8 will be a tight ship. Additionally it has extra features... and it's only 255KiB (increase of 40 over 1.7 line).
