manual move torrent data after complete download

NkD

Recommended Posts

my wish list on this best torrent klient ever:

1.

in popup menu (right click on torrent line) will be command "move to...". When i click it then will be open dialog when i select folder i want move selected torrent data (*.avi etc..) and i can continue seeding from new location. (torrent file dont move)

I know, that is global setting in the utorrent menu, but that is setting for all torrent and i want move avi file to other place and game to other place etc...

2.

when i select torrent and set tabbed dialog on files, i can open avi from it when i do right click and select open. I wish double click setting (optionaly) for this function do same thing.

P.S. Please exuse me my English, is'nt good

I've been doing that way, but I think #1 would be a good idea to implement into uTorrent. You don't have to go to the trouble of stopping the torrent, moving it manually through windows, then going back and giving uTorrent the new location, and starting it up again. Getting it done in one fell swoop would be a very nice feature IMHO. :-)

I know about all that jazz... but I have 7 drives in all and a default/temporary download location for all my torrents simply does not work for me, and the functionality in the persistent labels isn't exactly what I'm looking for. I guess I'm kind of fickle about where I want my downloads, since I usually just point it to a temporary location on the drive I want it and cut/paste it later. The difference between what's being suggested here and using labels is that the move is manual and available to change after the download has started and/or completed. The feature would be a somewhat lazy feature, to be sure, but seeing as how the functionality to move downloads after they are completed is already there, I don't think coding it in would be a huge ordeal, and it would be helpful [to me at least] ^^;;

Hi all,

Fewer seeds is a BIG problem for older torrents! Above issue is part of the problem!

I think this feature is a MUST if uTorrent want's to grow; bcz every computer user organizes files in a way that he needs, and he will do that anyway to avoid mess; meaning deleting .torrent and moving the data, resulting in fewer seeds.

Constraining someone to use a centralized point of file organization is very limited. I think the program should be flexible and adoptive to be used by wide audience. Forcing every one to use Labes although it's a great feature is a Communist approach of "Everyone for under one ruler", trust me it creates unhappiness, I know, I learned in a Soviet school.

in popup menu (right click on torrent line) will be command "move to...". When i click it then will be open dialog when i select folder i want move selected torrent data (*.avi etc..) and i can continue seeding from new location. (torrent file dont move)

I suggest:

instead of "move to..."

"Path > Label 1

> Label 2

> Custom...

"

PLUS "Path Column"

These 2 will be a killer.

I fully support that "automated move feature" mentionned at the beginning of the post.

I understand this is achievable with labels, but when torrent downloading is triggered automatically, the full download is finished before I would have time to put a label on it!

I would really like to be able to do it afterwards when the download is finished, exactly like Islseur suggested, something like right click to identified labels which move to file and keep on seeding from the new location. :)

Thanks !!!

Edit: actually using the built-in RSS reader and automatic label creation would do the trick but currently I use TVTAD :( so my torrents are just generic and no labels are applied!

actually.. i'd like to see this functionailty built into Set Download Location..

There must be some code in uTorrent that:

1) Upon completeion of torrent, and if move_completed_to_another_dir is true

2) close all file handles

3) move files

4) resume seeding

so why not just hook this code into set download location? As soon as a new location is chosen, move the files!

This could be a configurable option:

When Set Download Location is clicked...

(*) ...do not move files (old method)

( ) ...always ask to move files

( ) ...ask if leeching, move if seeding

( ) ...always move

This topic is quite old but it is still relevant, perhaps even more so now.

The request was for an integrated way to move a torrent's data to a new location.

Firon replied that one can move the directory manually, and then use the "Set download location" option to redirect a loaded torrent to this new location.

However, I cannot find this option anywhere (1.7.2). Was it removed?

The way it is now, I have to delete a torrent, move the files, and add the torrent again using the new directory. Apart from being not the quickest solution, it has three drawbacks.

1) it will cause the torrent to rehash unless you check "skip hash check" (but who knows whether the hashing is needed?)

2) it will erase the download/upload figures for this torrent, and hence reset the ratio

3) this functionality is not apparent. A new user will start looking for a way to relocate a torrent's data, but will only find "remove torrent" and "add torrent (no default save)". The latter option is not meant for adding torrents that have already been downloaded, so either the user will give up and stop seeding, or try it and discover that it actually works. There is uncertainty here and a cloud of mystery surrounds the 'sharing' aspect of torrent applications. When I first got acquainted

with bittorrent, I downloaded a few torrents, moved the files to the place of my preference, and that was that. It was a mystery to me how I could keep sharing those files. The reason for that, is because the functionality for doing that is not advertized, not readily apparent.

What I'm saying is that failing to provide with a clear solution for an important use case is simply bad interface design.

"Relocate this torrents data"/"Set data location" and "Add a torrent for seeding" should be top-level gui commands. Given that the implementation of the latter is no different from adding a torrent for downloading, it could suffice to just clarify the menu commands ("Add a torrent (seeding or downloading)...") and add a text-label "Please select the location to be used for saving this torrent's files or for loading any existing files for seeding/saving."

Also, to the average user it is not clear what the hash check is good for, so he doesn't know whether to skip it or not. It would be better to couple the hash check option (or at least the default value) to some use case related option that the user can identify with, such as whether the user is saving or 'loading'.

Also, I don't get the difference between "Add torrent..." and "Add torrent (no default save)... as both bring up a "save as" dialog.

Anyway, you can significantly enhance the (new) user's experience of this software with some easy interface enhancements that take an insignificant amount of time to implement.

greetings, xen.

Thanx. I've searched frantically for this option but somehow the 'advanced' submenu didn't catch my attention. This is not an advanced option, this is a most basic option!

If there is no difference between two menu options when a certain configuration flag is set, you should hide or disable one of the options. The only option that should remain is "Add torrent"

If there is a difference between two menu options, then the difference should be clear. One option should read "Add torrent (default save)" and the other "Add torrent (no default save)".

Well, that's my opinion. It's your turf. Good luck.

I dont know how much effort it will take but, i think if we want to solve the old downloads seed problem we need this feature, at least for me.

I usually have my media library and some p2p download folders. Every few days i've downloaded something i go in those folders pick up files, clean em and put the good ones in my library, result: if the file is beeing used it gets copied and most of all, if it wasnt active uTorrent cant find it anymore... now i should go for every file to find the torrent between 500+ in the client and go search its new location, that's lame, should be an automatic feature:

i'm asking to add an option to set a preferred location (like other p2p clients do) where utorrent will look for files, keep an index of ashes and file names like others do and so, if someone moves the data u can automaticaly reindex the torrent.

With this me and many others would share so much more! If i wouldnt give a damn i would just delete torrents, move data to my library and give up, but since i do i'm asking this feature to help the comunity.

Personally I think it would be a feature that would make a big difference on the number of seeders. I also have no idea how to code but if the program already does it in one fashion where you have to stop the seed why cant you just make it more in the fore front so really dumb users like me who have been deleting the torrents will see an option and choose it over deletion?

Over one year since I posted in this thread. The admins/coders clearly don't care, so it's pretty much a waste of time to keep it up. But I will add my updated opinion here, for the sake of discussion and the one chance that it will ring some bells with someone.

- For new torrent users, torrenting is a strange thing to do. There are many guides out there that alleviate this strain, but ultimately it depends entirely on the user gaining an understanding of how the system (at least locally) works. The user must gain an understanding of: the nature of the .torrent file, the nature of the relation between torrent file and data, the concept of (re)hashing. By making stuff more automatic (e.g. automatic search, match, index and rehash relocated data folders based on torrents loaded in the client) you increase the barrier to understanding. How will you teach a user that deleting a torrent file will not delete the data, when moving the data will keep the link intact? The user might come to understand the system keeps torrents and data linked at all times. This is an area of uncertainty that every knew user experiences: "what does "delete torrent" mean?". There is a practical obstacle here. The given menu option would better be described as "remove torrent from list of loaded torrents" but that's a bit long for a menu. Etc. The user must gain an understanding of torrents being indexes to local data (while loaded into the client), and you promote that understanding by keeping operations as simple as possible.

Even an option "relocate data" is ambiguous, because what will happen? It's not clear unless you know what is happening from prior experience or knowledge. There would have to be a dialog that says "This action will bla bla bla" and then offer a folder-selection dialog. But it's not the task of the program to explain how the program works. I realize there could be one-time dialogues giving information, but you have to fancy that, and I think the utorrent designers want to keep it lean and mean. And I think I agree with them. It is the task of the accompanying documentation to explain the underlying concepts and metaphors of the program. The program itself should focus on clean, efficient and effective functionality.

So what I'm saying is: it's tough luck, but most users are not serious about using computer programs (ie. not reading documentation). So we have to deal with people who slack it, but that is imo not a good reason to go screw up your interface design.

And one final thing: having 500+ torrents loaded is imo NOT a good reason for having this functionality. No one on earth has the bandwidth to meaningfully support 500+ torrents, and even if you do, imo you shouldn't. For the average user a torrent system usually gravitates to having maybe 20 torrents loaded (those are unsupported numbers) and maybe 6 active at one time. If you are an active seeder and seed your own torrents that you uploaded and you have great upload bandwidth, this may be a problem but that's how it is.

One viable option would be to include an option for utorrent to actively search a certain folder hierarchy (on manual command) and try to match, link and hash the data found that matches loaded torrents. But I wouldn't do this, if I were the utorrent coders. If you are the uploading power user that needs 30+ active torrents, you should also be the power user that keeps his torrent stash separated from his media library, duplicating content as necessary, and that keeps his torrent stash on a volume and location that doesn't change between system installs (my data folder is *always* "m:\data", my torrents in "m:\data\download\torrents", etc.) and who backs up his utorrent application data ("C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\uTorrent") before doing reinstalls.

I just think there is no proper way to 'fix' the problem of limited seeders. As evidenced by public tracker statistics, the seeder to leecher ratio is increasing as the years go by. People are getting educated. RARELY do I find an unseeded torrent for which there is no alternative. I try to support the unpopular torrents I uploaded myself, and that is all I can do. As it is, the torrent system works like a charm. My experience is even better with public trackers than with private trackers. I find private trackers to be not worth the hassle, and their policies sometimes make seeding impossible. Public popular torrents are usually well seeded, with good seeder to leecher ratio's. I see no reason at all to change the system. I might fancy communication systems between peers, but you really don't want to open the system up to spammers, or to the amount of crap seeders would be getting from leechers. Torrenting is a mass interfacing system, and you really don't want to have unfiltered messages going between anonymous users.

So, that is my stand on the issue. Hopefully, I have brought some understanding. If the admins want to take these arguments and put them in some "READ THIS FIRST" topic in the Feature Requests forum, be my guest, but either rephrase it in your own words or please give credit where credit is due. But this probably won't happen, so whatever.

... You are obviously frustrated, but your rant does not relate to any of the options in uT 1.8 for checking data location. Set Download Location's only flaw IMO is that some people may not DIRECTLY click on the file/folder they want, and assume it's like the add dialog. This is usually a quick fix though. In 1.8 there was added the ability to relocate individual files in multi-file torrents (similar to Azureus' implementation), Files tab, right-click, Relocate.

Torrent database is rejected, for reasons including some that you point out.

I have hundreds of torrents loaded... but I don't run them all at once. Hopefully when advanced seeding rules are added some of your ideas will become moot.
