lordcacill Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 So, just a few days ago uTorrent froze on me and it hasn't been able to function properly since. Meaning that every time I run the program, it freezes. Now, I do have Iolo System Mechanic Professional and when I ran uTorrent in the past, I turned the FW off as it tended to slow down my connection significantly and ran with no problems whatsoever with the FW turned off (by this I mean completely exited the service). So, I have ruled out the FW as the cause of my annoyance as I uninstalled it and the problem persisted. I have checked for viruses and spyware and came up empty on both counts.I have played with various settings in an attempt to get it to connect to a very active tracker with no success (I saw no seeds in uTorrent when the site tracker was reading well into the 8000's of seeds.) And in some cases, turning various incomplete torrents on triggered the freezing. This I find interesting as the torrents are not a "third party redistributed/regurgitated torrent" but one right from the people who made it. I also have acquired things from them in the past with much success and little trouble, so this makes me wonder as well.I am able to turn the program off in a 'forced manner' meaning right-click close or task manager end process. I get, when I turn the program on about 2 seconds of time to stop my torrents before it freezes again.Any help on this issue would be rather useful as the last time this happened, I had to do a system restore to fix the issue. (My computer needed it anyway so it wasn't a big deal then.)
Firon Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Can you please post a HijackThis log?Your system doesn't slow down when ut freezes, does it? Is the CPU use normal too?Are you saving any torrents to drives that don't exist anymore, perhaps?
lordcacill Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 Link for HijackThis please. Also, no system slowdown, my CPU usage is normal, (It's like the computer killed the program and forgot that it had done so) I haven't changed where I've been saving the torrents since I configured it; the drive is only half-filled so space is not an issue. (Well over 20 GB free and I'm only getting 100MB or so files on occasion and I move them to my second storage drive, from my primary storage drive (lots of storage is good for keeping track of files and things.) I keep my finished download folder separate from my downloading folder so I don't accidentally move an unfinished file. (I did it once and fixed the problem immediately so it wouldn't happen again.)In addition, this is also affecting new torrents, not just old ones. But it seems that the older ones are more likely to cause the freeze when they are actively trying to download. (Saving to a non-OS related drive BTW and this hasn't given me trouble either as it is a storage drive that I just recently checked for errors and defragmented. I have defragmented it in the past and this has never had a real impact on performance other than making it faster for me to get to my files.)

Firon Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Uninstall iolo and I bet the problems will go away...
lordcacill Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 Hopefully, you didn't put any money on that bet...Unfortunately, I just tried this, and it did not work; the freezing still occurred. Therefore, iolo can be completely ruled out as it wasn't even installed when it occurred this time. I utterly removed iolo from my computer, restarted, and waited for everything to finish loading. I double checked to make sure iolo was totally removed, and it was, before activating uTorrent. I turned it on, and normally it takes less than five seconds for me to get my seed number and connect to the torrents. This did not occur. I activated one of the torrents that I knew had frozen uTorrent before and as I hoped it wouldn't, it froze.Quite the conundrum we have here. Any additional thoughts? I tried both BitTorrent and Azureus as well, they also had the exact same problem. So, there must be something else affecting my ability to connect to trackers and get seeds. As you can probably guess, I do have a working internet connection. (;p) A little more software info that might be of some use: Vista Ultimate SP1, Registry Booster 2 (UniBlue; cleans up the registry, and did get my computer up and running faster than the norm as well, rather pleased with it) was run a few days ago. This may or may not have had something to do with it. But I didn't encounter any problems with it until several days after I had run it. Other than that, virus scans, spybot S&D run, and cleaned up my OS drive by removing some old games I hadn't played in a while. (uTorrent is actually run and saves on my secondary hard drive, so I don't think any of that would matter.)The only thing I can imagine that I can do, would be to uninstall the program, reinstall, (hopefully solving the problem and my progress on torrents in the process) and try that. If you think this might solve it, tell me how I can save my progress on my current torrents, as last time i couldn't salvage anything as uTorrent was on my OS drive (which i had to sys restore). >.< Not to mention i have one at 92.5% and i really don't want to download it all again.
jewelisheaven Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 ... start uninstalling software, or check your RAM. Possibly also a PSU problem if it's random.NOTE: Uninstalling uT won't help you... since you tried another torrent program. This suggests it's not the torrent programs themselves but other programs, or alternatively, hardware either dying or being FUBARd due to power issues.
lordcacill Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 I've started to remove programs that I have put on recently in order to see if one of them inadvertently is causing it. Also, I reproduced the error to get what windows says about the program error.Description: A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.Problem signature: Problem Event Name: AppHangB1 Application Name: uTorrent.exe Application Version: 0.0.0.0 Application Timestamp: 479aab8b Hang Signature: 0c6e Hang Type: 2049 OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Hang Signature 1: bc9d6db40b3e09fa36dd86be03246cc4 Additional Hang Signature 2: dcee Additional Hang Signature 3: c4e0cb8fd84c8e8d4ed654badd56427a Additional Hang Signature 4: b204 Additional Hang Signature 5: ec7d938c54ef2325df49acf2de3e17ba Additional Hang Signature 6: 1990 Additional Hang Signature 7: 0486393263b72b4e9ad1fe1360da68c5If this helps in uncovering the problem, awesome. If not, it's additional insight.Hardware problems are unlikely as this only happened once before and that was right before i had to do a system restore in order to get things working right again. This is an almost 1yr old laptop machine we're dealing with, so the PSU = battery or plugged into the wall through the battery. As it (uTorrent) used to run while unplugged and plugged in, and my battery hasn't gone bad on me (i would have known right away) I'm not so sure it's a PSU issue either. Also, I use way more than 50% of my RAM when I am MMORPGing and listening to music in iTunes. This is a tough problem.UPDATE: Uninstalled a small boatload of programs, and to my not so surprised eye, it didn't work. I'm pretty much down to the core system and programs that came on the computer, so... i'm not exactly sure what to do about it. In other news, I did install BitTorrent to see if I could weasel it to work. I did get it to work... until it tried to connect to a tracker... and when it did it froze. This is where I think the problem is: Once it gets a connection, it freezes for some reason. I even set the processor priority to 'realtime' and it does nothing once that program is frozen. It has no trouble if there are no connected torrents. So, something about it connecting to a tracker freezes it. Any ideas guys? I honestly don't want to System restore to get this to work again, because that was the only thing that worked last time. (but as I mentioned, it needed it, IE didn't work at all. I was using firefox/netscape to access the internet.)
Firon Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Keep iolo uninstalled, remove the adentium antivirus app. Start -> Run -> netsh winsock resetThen reboot and try again.
lordcacill Posted June 20, 2008 Author Report Posted June 20, 2008 that got it to work again, without needing to uninstall iolo to do so. however, now, i'm experiencing other issues, unrelated to utorrent or torrenting in general. so i have to go elsewhere to get those resolved. however, thanks for the help!
Firon Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 Well, winsock reset removes all the LSPs that iolo adds to the system (among other things)... at least, until it readds them.
lordcacill Posted June 23, 2008 Author Report Posted June 23, 2008 took iolo at least 6 months to do that.
Switeck Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 iolo probably recently had a major update...that was majorly bad on your computer.
Raht Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 It is perhaps just a strange coincidence, but I have the same problem now, and it started few days ago.Tough uT can be forcefully shutted down, the process is still in memory, taking somewhat ~14 MBytes of RAM and refusing to get killed. Also, I don't have iolo.I'll post HijackThis when you tell me when to snatch it: before launching uT, while it hangs or after killing the task.
raygun808 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 "Start -> Run -> netsh winsock reset"Firon, youre a lifesaver! I've been searching everything and everywhere and nothing worked. THIS WAS MY FIX! iolo is what the common denominator is here. same exact issue.
