Seejak
Pretty simple question - when I am uploading or 'seeding,' do I have to pay my isp for the broadband used? (I know very little about bittorrent)
DreadWingKnight
Bandwidth used is bandwidth used.If you have to pay for what you use, then it's that simple.
Seejak
So, forgive me for being dense, but when I leave uTorrent running after I've downloaded everything, am I paying for bandwidth?
Switeck
Since you seem to be in New Zealand, I fear the answer may be yes.You probably have a metered internet service which charges you EXTRA if you exceed some tiny amount of bandwidth used per month.uTorrent uses a LOT of bandwidth, if given a chance.1 GigaBYTE of bandwidth is only ~12-13 KiloBYTES/second running 1 day straight. And if that's your upload speed, even your download speed will likely be ~0.2 KiloBYTES/second to keep the upload going while seeding. That's normally a tiny amount, but over a day that's about 17 MegaBYTES.
hermanm
There was a guy in the news who was using Bittorent on his cell-phone broadband. His bill came out to be 50,000 euros that next month.
jewelisheaven
Check your ISP's FUP or AUP, or call them up and ask them "Am I limited to a specific quota for downloading and uploading?"hermanm, it's not hard to link http://torrentfreak.com/man-downloads-tv-shows-and-collects-54000-cellphone-bill-071225/
