dcsquare
I've been using utorrent with Vista32 SP1 for 2 months now. No problem if I connect my computer directly to the cable modem. utorrent is connectible.I now added a router, to share my internet connection. Linksys WRT54GL, with dd-wrt std v24. The computer with utorrent is added to DMZ.The port for utorrent is 51525.The following happens:- azureus at port 51525: all OK (on internal test and µTorrent Port Checker)- bitcomet at port 51525: all OK - ftp server (Filezilla) at port 51525: all OK- utorrent at port 51525: NOT CONNECTIBLE. RED EXCLAMATION MARK!!!!!Answers:- no, the applications weren't running at the same time.- I'm using Avast Home, without the P2P module- utorrent added as an exception in Windows Firewall- no other firewall is turned on (not even in the router)What really baffles me is that the damn thing works if I connect directly to the internet, but not when behind a router... and is the only application that refuses to work behind my router. Switeck
Disable DMZ on the router and try manually forwarding individual ports.Give uTorrent and the other applications a re-test.It's possible the other applications are silently making a firewall rule in Window's firewall? GTHK
And if you manually forward ports disable UPnP on µTorrent.
dcsquare
Disabled DMZ. Forwarded manually port 55555. Disabled UPnP in utorrent. Results:Vuze (Azureus): OKFTP server: OKutorrent: not connectible (Listen error). Please bear with me with a logic attempt:1. utorrent works fine without a router2. utorrent is not connectible with a router (either by DMZ or port forwarding)Note: I haven't changed *anything* in the system. I simply unplugged the computer from the cable modem and connected it to the router.1+2=> the problem is the router (any complicated problem has a simple, albeit wrong, solution).3. all applications, including torrent clients, work properly behind the router4. I've tried 2 other routers (Asus and AT) and all applications, including torrent clients, work properly behind them5. utorrent is not connectible behind *any* router 3+4+5=> the problem is utorrent
Firon
You sure you disabled UPnP on all the other clients? You might be better off leaving it on.Also, DD-WRT is really... shit as an alternative firmware. Tomato is better (it works). That was my and Ultima's experience. And there's still the possibility that Avast is silently blocking utorrent.
Ultima
Just be wary of Tomato v1.20 for the time being -- it includes a version of dnsmasq that attempts to mitigate/prevent the recently-revealed DNS cache poisoning issue. Unfortunately, it probably wasn't tested thoroughly, because it causes DNS resolving dropouts for many users (myself included). Tomato v1.19 has been rock solid (I've reverted to it for now), but I'm still waiting for v1.21, which should fix the DNS issues.
dcsquare
Well, boys and girls, today utorrent died (I've been using it without a router, cause I haven't been able to make it work behind a router. Now it says "Listen error" regardless of what port I'm using... and I'm NOT behind a router.I've uninstalled avast (the A/V I'be been using with utorrent for 3 years now) and disabled windows firewall. DreadWingKnight
Listen error regardless of what port you use tells me that there's something on your system blocking uT's ability to open its listener.Whatever it is, it needs to be dealt with. Firon
Have you tried disabling UPnP and forwarding manually? This also generally entails setting a static IP for your PC outside of the DHCP range.
dcsquare
Whatever is blocking utorrent is beyond my ability. Windows firewall and defender disabled, no AV, and the running processes don't seem to have anything to do with utorrent.I really don't know what I can do more.@Firon: I don't understand: how can I manually forward ports if the computer is connected directly to the cable modem? Firon
I'd re-enable Windows defender, remove any exceptions for utorrent and recreate them. Then try what I said in the post before.
dcsquare
Firon: We have a problem communicating: the computer is connected directly to the cable modem. As in directly to the ISP. I have no control whatsoever on the ISP's hardware, to open/close ports, change IP or whatever. The only thing I can do is change the DN servers (using OpenDNS btw). So UPnP, NAT, port forwarding etc are no longer valid subjects for discussion.I did re-enable Windows Defender and Windows firewall, reset the Windows firewall and re-added utorrent as exception. Nor connectible. So I reinstalled avast and switched to another torrent client. That works. I do think I spent too much time already (weeks) trying to solve this problem.Thank you very much to all that tried to help me.
Ultima
I doubt the HijackThis log you provided contains the full process list, as Vista definitely requires more than just those processes/services running. Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, Ctrl+D (to show the lower DLL pane), select the µTorrent process from the list, Ctrl+S (and save the list somewhere you'll find easily -- like the Desktop), then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here. And make sure it's displaying processes from all users (in the View menu).
Switeck
Process Explorer's DLL list will show us once and for all if there's any 'injected' DLLs interfering with uTorrent. Like viruses, trojans, and bad commercial software.

dcsquare
I disabled windows search: same result - listen errorI already tried uninstalling avast and the problem remained, so it was not the AV.The Bonjour Namespace Provider is installed by iTunes and most of Adobe apps from CS3. I disable it right after install (it has something to do with advertising computer's services on the network).
Firon
I'm at a loss... I assume that running µTorrent as admin doesn't help?
Ultima
Indeed, this seems like a very odd one.I don't mean to insult anyone's knowledge here, but were I experiencing the issue, I would consider reinstalling Windows entirely. It's often a long/annoying process, but I don't see any reason µTorrent would be misbehaving (while other clients aren't) other than potentially hidden malware (think: rootkit-hidden -- the HijackThis and Process Explorer logs aren't revealing anything obvious). Yes, µTorrent's not perfect, but it hasn't been known to just fail with a listening error without outside influence either :/At any rate, just for kicks, try enabling all of the logging options in µTorrent's Logger tab context menu. Grab TCPView from sysinternals.com and run it, then restart µTorrent.- Does TCPView show any other application binding to µTorrent's listening port?- Does anything remotely interesting come up in µTorrent's Logger tab? Switeck
Why does Apple Bonjour inject a DLL into uTorrent.exe space?
thelittlefire
Bonjour is one of those "helpful" services ... zero-configuration with its ups AND downs. Unless it's listening on the port I haven't seen anything similar except recently when MyWebSearch went bonkers.Using HJT to remove the hooks promptly broke Firefox. However IE was unaffected... so I reverted the changes and Firefox worked again after a reboot.
dcsquare
Just an idea: is utorrent trying to use the IPv6? And how do I tell utorrent to ignore the IPv6? Firon
Now THAT is strange. Can you try closing ut, going into %AppData%\uTorrent and deleting settings.dat (and .old)? Then restart it.If that doesn't help, does running as admin make any difference?
