kifo
Hi I am new here. I have been using Azureus for quite a while and when I found out about this light client μtorrent, I thought I should give it a try. After browsing through the forum here for tips on μtorrent settings, I adjusted my preferences and decided to check out how the 2 clients actually compared. Here is 2 screenshots which I compared the download speed between using μtorrent and Azureus. The same files are downloaded and uploaded in both of them. The screencaps are taken after the torrents have stabilised (approx 20mins?). As you can see, for some reason, the bloated software Azureus is much faster than lightweight μtorrent.Am I missing something important in my μtorrent preference settings to account for the speed reduction? Firon
You cannot run both at the same time...http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=2000http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#Why_are_my_torrents_going_so_slow.3F
bailej03
On that note of running both at the same time, my brother on another port of our router is running Azureus... configured correctly and using a different port, but could this cause problems too...should we use the same client? Firon
It's not because of the different clients, it's because you're spreading your upload across multiple clients/torrents, which reduces overall speeds (less upload per slot = less download from other peers). You may also choke your connection if you don't have QoS on your router. But yes, he should use µTorrent, because Azureus sucks
kifo
Thanks!Well no I was not running both at the same time. I first started with μTorrent and tried to adjust the settings since the downloads were pretty slow. Even after playing with the preferences, it didn't improve much so I decided to shut it down and change back to Azureus to see perhaps if the torrents were slow anyway. Although the downloads still weren't very good with Azureus, they are much better than what I am getting with μTorrent. So in fact the μTorrent screenshot was taken after I had shut down Azureus and restarted μTorrent to reconfirm that it is indeed slower. So I am just wondering if I had miss out on any of the settings. Firon
Check the two links I gave?
bailej03
Just quickly, what is QoS. I have a DSL 504 Gen II, so I doubt I it... I think the problems I have are that I am downloading torrents which are probably a little old? Although torrentspy says full health... smaller torrents, which presumably ppl are still happy to seed? work perfectly fine at the same time the bigger torrent struggles. kifo
Hi thanks again!Yup, I have set the portforwarding settings and the various other settings concerning max connections etc. I think my ISP does bandwidth traffic shaping and there is nothing I can do about it. In fact, I configure both Azureus and μTorrent to use the same port so it should be an issue here. Since I do not have a problem using Azureus or even the original Bittorrent client, I don't think I have a NAT problem.I am aware that torrent traffic is pretty much dynamic in nature and so I was very careful to make sure that the settings on both the clients were optimised to my best knowledge and the numerous helpful advices offered on this forum as well as Azureus. Please don't take it that I am trying to knock μTorrent or the tremedous effort of the programmer here. I am only trying to find out how I can optimise the performance of the μTorrent client for myself. As of now, the results haven't proved themselves yet. Hence if anyone can offer any pointers that will be great.
Firon
Well, let's start with the basic question: what's your connection speed and your actual max upload (in KiB/s)?
bailej03
Sorry thought u saw that on general thread... I should have stayed there.1500/256kbsMAX upload...20kB/s
Firon
20 KiB/s is rather lower for 256kbit O.o YOu sure that's the right amount? Run a speedtest on http://dslreports.com/stest to make sure. And well, set µT's upload cap to 80% of that.
bailej03
Not sure, I have 1500 down, 256 max up... in Australia.I got the 20kB/s upload setting from 1c3d0g's guide.
1c3d0g
You could also use 85% of your upload, which would bring you close to 22 kB/s.
