uTorrent - Crashes / Red Stop icon / Browsing freezes - needs reboot

Hi all,

Please bear with me as I try to outline all of the above in context, and I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions to help me try to fix this.

Up until about 2 weeks ago, uTorrent was running perfectly using version 1.7.6. Then, all of a sudden, uTorrent seemed to freeze up after being opened for varying times, but typically, after about 20 minutes maximum, all torrents would have the 'red arrow pointing down' icon next to them, all torrents stopped, and I could not even launch a browser - essentially, the whole system required a reboot, whereupon browsing functions returned to normal as well as everything else.

I downloaded version 1.7.7 - same thing occurred, so I went to version 1.8 (build 11564) and the same thing still occurred.

I double checked all speed settings, using Ultima's excellent guide, and all was well, and I went through Switek's equally helpful troubleshooting step by step, but everything was as it should be.

I thought perhaps it might be the modem, so I bought a new Web Excel AL2108P (Billion 5200 - same thing, diff badge), and all seemed ok - speed was back up to normal levels (averaging 200 - 400 kbps up to nearly 900kbps) and stability seemed to be back as well.

I configured the new modem as per the connection wizard, and entered the previous port fowarded number I'd used with the previous Dynalink RTA1335 (Port 35060), and the new IP number of the Web Excel modem - 192.168.1.254, as you can see here in the below screenshot:

uTorrentPortSetting.jpg

Unfortunately, I'm either entering incorrect values or something else is wrong, because the little red Network Status icon is predominantly displayed at the bottom of the torrent screen as you can see here below:

uTorrentRedNotConnectableIcon.jpg

Two things do not make much sense to me though:

1) The Network Connection icon has changed briefly to Green for a few minutes, then back to the Yellow Triangle, and since 4.00am this morning, has been mainly on the Red Circle, occasionally switching between that and the Yellow Triangle.

2) Speed seems unaffected, as you can see by the download speed indicated beside the Red Circle Network Connection screenshot above.

I would dearly like to get the Green Tick Network Connection icon displayed, as it was all the time up until two weeks ago.

The only thing that has really been downloaded into the computer was SP3 couple of weeks ago.

I am running NOD32 2.7, and for over a year now I've followed Switek's Step by Step guide with respect to listing uTorrent as an exclusion in IMON, as you can see here below:

uTorrentExclusioninNOD32.jpg

To be safe - especially with SP3 seemingly causing so many unusual situations with other applications for other people, I uninstalled NOD32 and re-installed it, along with uTorrent, during which I upgraded to the 1.7.7 and then 1.8 version, which I currently am running.

Again, this torrent freezing / browser freezing situation, which required a computer reboot seems to have the speed back at this time, but the Network Connection icon is what I'm concerned about as it indicates something does need to be corrected.

Please also find below the Hijack This log and Process Explorer log.

If there's any other tests or logs I could run, or anything else I might be able to advise you of or display for you here, please let me know and I'll be happy to do so.

We still need to know:

- EVERYTHING you've tried so far, including ANYTHING listed here. Yes, an explicit list would be helpful (DHT settings, etc).

- What the port checker from the Speed Guide writes

- What the Speed Guide shows your settings to be (press Ctrl+G in µTorrent)

- What you have net.max_halfopen set to (Preferences > Advanced in µTorrent)

Hello Ultima,

Here is the information (hopefully) you have requested - if you require anymore, please advise what and where to go to retrieve it for you. Sorry for the length of this, but hopefully it has the information which might assist you and others.

Also, further to the above post, as per the below screenshot, the uTorrent Network Icon turned Green for about 3 or 4 minutes just before, then reverted back to the Yellow Triangle - and will likely change to the Red Circle later on .... it is really strange & perplexing as to why the Green Network icon is not fully solid all the time.

1) Make 100% sure you read the setup guide properly and in its entirety - Read as fully as possible

2) Set your firewall up properly, if applicable (find some settings guides here) - Not applicable

3) Select the correct upload speed in the Setup Guide (included in setup guide, but just to be sure) - Done, as per screenshot and double checked

4) If you already have a rule/exception created for µTorrent in your firewall, try removing and recreating it - Rule / Exception created, deleted and recreated in NOD32, as well as NOD32 being disabled for torrenting

5) Read the entire FAQ - Done - could not find anything there specifically dealing with this situation

6) Search the forums for similar problems, using keywords and such - Done and applied some hints for different areas of my enquiry like Speed Guide settings and Port Forwarding - still, Network Icon is not solid green

7) Use the newest version of µTorrent (latest beta if there's a public beta testing build available) - Done, as per screenshot, updated to 1.8 late last week

Many thanks for yours and Firon's efforts here with this. Before I uninstall both SuperAntiSpyware Pro and NOD32, I disable them completely anyway - i.e. they're not running as applications when I use uTorrent, so would that necessitate them being uninstalled?

I only use SuperAntiSpyware Pro maybe once a week and once the scan / updating is completed, I close the program.

With NOD32, I close it from the Taskbar when I use uTorrent - still, I will uninstall both of them if you think either might be causing conflicts with uTorrent.

Anyway, this is what I've managed to find out for Ultima's requests:

- What the port checker from the Speed Guide writes:

uTorrentPortChecker.jpg

With this, I follow the instructions to the absolute letter - the default Modem settings for the Web Excel units is the Billion 5200 - I go to that modem, do the Port Forward and configure exactly as per the Port Forward.com site's suggestion - as you can see in my initial post and screenshot there.

- What the Speed Guide shows your settings to be (press Ctrl+G in µTorrent):

uTorrentSpeedGuideSettings.jpg

Again, using the next LOWEST setting (768k) on my total upload speed which tops out at 860k using Speedtest.net and zdnet.com.au's broadband speed tests, uTorrent has applied applicable settings here.

Also note that the Network Icon is now the Red Circle ... this lasted for about 10 minutes and is now the Yellow Triangle.

- What you have net.max_halfopen set to (Preferences > Advanced in µTorrent):

uTorrentnet_max_halfopenSettings.jpg

With this shot, I noticed that two values are empty - those being the "net.bind_ip" & the "net.outgoing_ip" settings ... Are they supposed to be like that or if not, are you able to advise on what values should be there and how or where do I go about applying those values?

Lastly, please find below, screenshots of pretty much the entire Modem settings -maybe some are relevent to the above? If not, my apologies.

Sorry for the length of this post, but the Forum doesn't allow separate postings from the last one a member makes, hence the length of this one.

The plan I'm on allows for 40GB On Peak / 110GB Off Peak usage (Off Peak for this plan is from 1.00am to 7.00am), so the Scheduler function comes in very handy.

It is currently just after 5.30am on Sunday here in Queensland, Australia at the moment and I've been watching uTorrent change its Network status from Green to Yellow - back and forth after a few minutes on each.

Since I've been watching it, the Network Status icon has not changed to the Red Circle - not to say it hasn't at some time in the last few hours reverted to Red, it's just that it hasn't appeared in the last 30 minutes I've been up and watching it.

Please see the below screenshots, firstly of when the Network Indicator icon is Green, then Yellow, and please note the time of each - I screenshot the change only a few seconds after it switched from Green network status to Yellow Triangle network status.

Also, since this new modem was installed 24hours ago, and since I've been switching off NOD32 when torrenting, browsing remains unaffected and I do not have to reboot to regain other PC functionality, but the Torrent arrows still turn Red, rather than staying Blue, and the question of the Network Status is still very much one I would like to solve, because something is obviously not right here.

Also Speed is not the issue here - as seen from one of the previous screenshots, as well as here, I have not got a problem (I don't believe) with my speed - just the connection of the Torrents & Network Status of the application.

Just another aside - two of the torrents shown in previous screenshots have finished, but again, rather than reverting to Green seeding status, they retain the Red arrow status indicating a tracker error.

Not one torrent in the last week or so since this whole problem started has turned Green when they've finished and are seeding.

- Your ISP places you behind some transparent proxy, it seems, so the port checker may be inaccurate.

- I see many indications that you still haven't followed the link's suggestions. DHT is still enabled. net.max_halfopen still at default. Global max connections still very high. Overloaded connections happen because of bad settings, which causes slow browsing and apparent port-forwarding issues.
