Very slow download speeds and 'listen error'.

My specs:

Windows - Vista 64bit

Firewall - Windows Defender (Uttorent listed to allow)

ISP - Charter

Router - Linksys WRT54Gv8

Modem - Surfboard

D/L,U/L - ~ 5000KB/sec, 500KB/sec.

Utorrent V 1.8

Things I have done:

-Updated router firmware

-Forwarded ports through router setup

-Created static IP

-Followed numerous setup/troubleshooting guides

-Ran tests and my ISP is not limiting bandwidth for torrent traffic

UTorrent Port Checker indicates my ports are NOT forwarded. I get red 'listen error - you should change the listen port' icon at bottom of UTorrent.

Some questions:

1 - Do I pick random ports or is there a specific port to choose?

2 - One guide says to list a port range from 6881 to 6889. Is that different from the listen port?

3 - In addition to port forwarding, there is also a port triggering option on my router setup page. Is there anything that can be done there?

4 - Is there anything with the static IP that could be tweaked? I don't know much about creating one but I did. It seemed to show up properly. Is there something I might be missing there?

5 - With specs of ~ 5000KB/sec downloads and 500KB/sec uploads, what should be utorrent settings be?

6 - Could Windows Vista 64 bit have anything to do with the problem?

This program use to work and now it doesn't for some reason. I've tried for hours to get it tweaked and I must be missing something. Sorry to have so many questions but I apparently need a lot of hand-holding to get this working properly again. Thanks in advance.

Listen error means either another program is using that port on your computer, or a firewall is messing about. Pick a port number (like 26268), remove the second forwarding rule, and change the ports in the first forwarding rule so that start and end match your listening port.

Thanks for your response. Can you please clarify what you mean by matching the listening port? Do you mean if I choose 26268, the range should be like 26260 through 26270? Just as long as the port range includes the listen port?

Just an update. I thought I maybe had found the problem. Windows Firewall was allowing UTorrent access but had the wrong port listed. I put the listen port # but still it didn't change anything.

Another update. Here is a pic of my router status page. Maybe there's something odd in there?

Status page shows your router is fine. The port you use in µT is the one you enter into the router, use the range (using my port example) 26268-26268 (you only need your listening port forwarded, anything else does nothing).

Thanks again for the reply. Unfortunately, that didn't change anything. I have 'protocol' set to 'both'. Should it be that, or TCP or UDP?

Right now, one file is downloading at about 150 kB/s. Oh, just dropped below 100. Everything else is about 10 kB/s average. I understand it has a lot to do with seeding, but I've downloaded some very popular files that have taken days.

Yes it's both, you removed the second rule right? Two more things, disable UPnP on µTorrent and then reboot the router to make sure it's not screwy. Also, if I recall correctly, Charter messes up BitTorrent traffic. It's still a listen error right? If so, it's a firewall or some other program on your computer. Try disabling the Vista one, the WRT54G has one build in.

Yeah, I removed the second rule. UPnP was already disabled since I read about doing that in another guide. I disabled Windows Firewall and rebooted the router. Unfortunately, still no effect. Maybe its something with my static IP?

I ran the test to see if my IP was limiting torrent traffic and it said it wasn't, nor was Charter on the "bad ISP" list.

The last thing you recommended would not work. The cmd box would pop up and then disappear. I went to cmd.exe and managed to find the log, but no way to copy it.

I spy foreign LSP's. The third log is a notepad file, just open your C: drive and double-click it. What components do you have on AVG? (Ex. E-mail scanner (which is bad)).

LSPs? I take it those are bad? Can they affect torrent traffic? Is there a way to get rid of them?

The winsock_catalog thing doesn't do anything. It doesn't make a text file or anything. I searched C: drive and everywhere else and there isn't one.

As far as AVG, it has A/V, anti-spyware, email-scanner, link scanner, resident shield, and update manager.

You're on Vista right? And LSP's are only bad when they suck. They intercept traffic, useful for firewalls till they block things you want.

Yeah. I am on Vista 64. Should I consider a way to get rid of or disable these LSPs?

My searches suggest it's fine. PE and HJT logs aren't really my forte, which is why I requested the NETSH log. That probably didn't work because of UAC, you'd have to make an admin command prompt and use it there.

Is that HJT out of data? Make sure you have the latest.

After spending hours trying tons of suggestions online, this worked for me:

Delete settings.dat and settings.dat.old from the HIDDEN username\%AppData%\roaming\uTorrent with the client closed.
