Citsme Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 Hi. I'm new to this and I have downloaded the manuals and printed the Beginner's Guide but I can't find a quick answer to a couple of questions regarding seeding.First, what is the difference between seeding and queued seeding?Next, how long should I leave a torrent I have finished downloading active in utorrent? I know there is a percentage expected but how do I determine when I have reached that?My problem is that my hard drive is filling up quite quickly as I am learning the file conversion part of this at the same time! I promise to read everything I have printed but I really need to know how long I should leave the torrents active so I can get rid of some. If it goes by ratio then I have one over 9.Regarding another post I was reading, what does a * in the # column mean?Thank you for your time! It's appreciated.
Switeck Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Heck, a ratio of ~1.1 means you've given back everything you've taken probably even counting hash files and time delays.A queued seeding torrent isn't actually active. It just means "this one goes next".You can only upload so much at once, so it does no good to upload extremely slowly...instead limited torrents are allowed to run at once.A good rule-of-thumb for seeding:Any torrent with lots of seeds per peer doesn't need you to keep it alive OR fast, so even a ratio of maybe 0.8 might be ok if you're desperate. Check back later when seeds may be fewer and you can do more good.Any torrent you have a higher ratio on is also fine to be stopped, if the tracker reports at least 1 seed.I think a * in the # column means a queued (not yet active) seed torrent.2nd link in my signature can confirm whether your settings match your connection. They're a lot more conservative on global and per-torrent connection max...but actually a tiny bit higher on active torrents at once for some speeds.
Ultima Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 * means finished downloading but not yet reached the seeding goal. This and queued seeding are described in the manual.
Citsme Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 Thank you both for your replies. Switeck, I see there is a lot to learn here! I looked at your Recommended uTorrent Settings link and didn't understand it . . . at all! I have already downloaded the User Manual, Ultima, and I will be reading that asap while my files are burning. I needed to get an answer right away about how long to leave a finished downloaded torrent active as I want to give back at least what is expected if not more and then clear up my shrinking hard drive!Your time and answers are appreciated. I will revisit the links above after reading the manual so that I actually understand them! Thanks again.
Harold Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 There isn't much to understandJust apply the settings
Ultima Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 That's besides the point. Citsme WANTS to understand, so while "just apply[ing] the settings" is sufficient for you, it isn't for Citsme -- nothing wrong with that. There's no need to deter learning.
okeee Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 What's a seeding goal, i can't find it in the guides.
Switeck Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Thank you both for your replies. Switeck, I see there is a lot to learn here! I looked at your Recommended uTorrent Settings link and didn't understand it . . . at all!I'll add my reply to the 2nd link in my signature rather than here...since that way it'll probably be more universally read. It's a VERY LONG REPLY...and I'm still working on it. Ok, it now exists as the LAST post to my 2nd link in my signature...on page 3.
DreadWingKnight Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Search for "goal" in the user manual.
okeee Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 I did and there were only descriptions of how to reach seeding goal, not what a seeding goal is.
thelittlefire Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 Queueing settings are the default values your torrents will shoot for before rotating out of the queue.
