Drowned world Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 I recently installed the bitorrent client and tried to download movies, but after a little while I'd get the Error: Access is denied message. After a few days of trying, I uninstalled it and installed Utorrent instead, but again the same problem occurs (though the downloads did get a bit further...buy like 1%!) I don't have google/MSN desktop installed, though I do have the google search toolbar on my internet explorer - is this the same thing? I read somewhere else that I should try adjusting my port access on my firewall program, so I did, but again no luck. Now, I'm new to the whole torrent thing so I may be overlooking a simple matter, I've tried reading all the posts I could find on this matter but each time the situation is a little different from mine and more to the point, I don't understand half the jargon! So as a newbie, I'm asking for someone to help me get started on this, and go easy on me pls! Cheers
Switeck Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 You've got "hostile" commercial software on your computer that is locking out uTorrent from accessing files that uTorrent made!Roxio and Nero are prime suspects...their media indexers are notoriously bad.
Drowned world Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 I don't have either Roxio or Nero on my PC...could is be some other 'hostile' software? As a side note, I have just recently recovered my computer, so I have very little programs installed, and even these were from the recovery disks by the computer company.
Firon Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Just post a HijackThis log. Easiest way to find out.
Drowned world Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 What exactly is a HijackThis log? As I said before, a novice I am!
Drowned world Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 Is this what you mean? I've never heard of this program before, watched a short video on it just now. Firon Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Make sure that your iTunes media library (and any folders it uses) are NOT any of your µTorrent download folders.Failing that, it could be Zone Alarm's fault, as it's a really weird firewall that breaks tons of stuff at random.
Drowned world Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 No itunes library or folders in Utorrent folders, I guess is may just be zonealarm, darn! Thanks for all your help anyway
Firon Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 If you're NOT running as admin, it could just be a permissions problem.
Drowned world Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 I am running as admin, but I've just read a post which recommended trying the client Vuze (formerly Azureus) and it seems to be working! Been downloading for a while now without the error message appearing, I wonder why it works with this client and not the others. Has it got something to do with it being written Java (I saw it on wikipedia)? I have no idea why I think this since I know nothing about computers, but something at the back of my head is ticking away
Firon Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Can you go back and try removing Zone Alarm? I'd like to test the theory.I'd also say to check Filemon and see what happens when utorrent gets denied on a particular file. This is a lot easier to do with only one torrent running (and no other app doing disk stuff)
Drowned world Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 I had someone else install zone alarm for me so I have no idea how to reinstall it if I wiped it off, but I reckon it may have something to do with it. Just one final question, does downloading slow down the more torrents I have downloading at the same time? Or does it not matter as I am uploading as I am downloading?
Switeck Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 Running more torrents at once than I recommend in my speed guide (2nd link in my signature) will likely see TOTAL download speed drop. So individual torrent speeds will drop even faster...Do note that it may be possible for the active torrents I recommend to all be downloading torrents...but the average speed per downloading torrents will probably be lower that way unless they each have lots of seeds.
