outeredge Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Haven't used this before. Everything appears to be setup correctly and I am able to download but the speeds are very slow. Download is 4 - 17kbs upload is max is 22kbs. I have the following information according to the other posts.1. uTorrent network status is green.2. port checker selected port 13440. I have tried multiple ports reconfiguring both uTorrent and the router.3. net.max_halfopen manual changed from 8 to 7.4. OS is Windows Vista5. Norton security disabled6. router is a Belkin F5D7230-4. Modem is a Surfboard SB4100.7. ISP is Charter Communication.8. 10mbs Cable connection.9. Speed tests: download 9601kbs, upload 314kbs (from the site it states this may not be accurate for upload), 15ms latency.10. Computer is a homemade model.CPU: AMD Phenom 9500 quad-core 2.21GHz4 Gigs ram.Don't remember the motherboard model or manufacturer (Asus??). Nvidia 8600 GT Video card. As stated I can't get download speeds faster than 17kbs. I can download from other web sites with Download Accelerator and it tops out around 1200kbs. Slowest rate no matter what has been around 300kbs. I have been reading the forum and tried pretty much everything listed. I would be greatful for any help. Also, could I use Download Accelerator to download through this site and how would I set that up?Thanks.
thelittlefire Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 If it's not a Download Limited problem, for which you should refer to the http://utorrent.com/faq.php then it's possible your current settings don't work on Charter due to ISP mangling. Check out the sticky at the index of this forum "if you have speed problems..." suggested fixes may work for you... you may need to set your Ctrl-G settings lower and definitely try lower connections per torrent. Try lowering halfopen even more. Have you tried without the belkin between you and your surfboard?
Firon Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Uninstall Norton, don't just disable it.http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992#p258232
Switeck Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Your router (Belkin F5D7230-4) and modem (Surfboard SB4100) are both notorious for limitations either in number of connections or stability issues...that will probably require you to use fewer connections than recommended by uTorrent's Speed Guide (CTRL+G) for xx/256k upload.Try my 2nd link in my signature, and choose the 320 kilobits/second upload setting. You may still need to reduce both per-torrent and global max as low as 50...and reduce half open connections as well possibly as low as 2.This is on top of disabling other connection-making features in uTorrent...such as DHT, UPnP, Local Peer Discovery, and Resolve IPs.
outeredge Posted August 12, 2008 Author Report Posted August 12, 2008 Thanks all for responding. I've tried all your suggestions but have seen little to no change in the download or upload speed. By-passing the router surprisingly did nothing. I've changed per-torrent and global max to everything from 25 to 200. I've reduced half open connections one at a time from 8 to 2, testing each time. No change. I've uninstalled Norton and disable any protection windows offers. I even had a neighbor that is a line repairman for Charter come by and check the lines. everything is clean and spot on where it should be.Any other suggestions? Thanks again.
Switeck Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Try forced encryption and disable legacy connections. It could be your ISP is hostile towards your connections.
outeredge Posted August 13, 2008 Author Report Posted August 13, 2008 Thanks. Tried that. No improvement. I'm cursed.
Switeck Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 I don't deem it likely, but something to try just for learning more about your computer is HijackThis! and Process Explorer. There may be hostile commercial software running in the background screwing with uTorrent. Process Explorer's DLL view for uTorrent might show what's linking into uTorrent.1st link in my signature explains this better...I hope. There's also this too:http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Avoid_traffic_shapingOnline tester for ISP throttling: Glasnost
outeredge Posted August 19, 2008 Author Report Posted August 19, 2008 Hi all. Thanks for the help so far but I'm not succeeding with my speed issues. I've played around with multiple combinations of the preferences. Ran Hijackthis and spybot search and destroy (these have been well loved tools for years). I'm stumped. Speed tests out at 1000kbs and I can download close to that speed with other programs. With uTorrent best I can get is around 55kbs. I have been downloading a 4 gig file for over a week and it is just at 80% complete. If anyone has any other idea's please let me know. Thanks again.
Switeck Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Try testing your download speed max in uTorrent by downloading the OpenOffice test torrent mentioned in the 1st link in my signature.
