tracker problems

i've been using utorrent for ages and have been able to make adjustments to keep things going smoothly... until now.

i'm using 1.7.7 through a router, with zonealarm, nod, pg2, sp3, tcpip patch, port forwarded, encryption and legacy on... you name it.

for the past 2 weeks i'm getting 'connection closed by peer' and 'offline'.

i've troubleshooted everything but to no avail.

but one thing does help. if i restart the client, trackers status shows okay... for a whlie.

then they slowly go red, again. resetting modem and router have no effect.

i'm using mostly private sites, but all trackers seem to be affected, and some more than others.

what gives?

since restarting utorrent seems to temporarily solve the problem, i'm inclined to think the solution must be something to do with the client itself.

i've also done some updates to all the software including windows so that could done something. but then i manually resetted all settings (getting very desperate) and even went back to 1.6.1.

help...

Try an openoffice torrent and see if that tracker goes bad. Also, ditch zonealarm, it's crap. Something that actually works without messing up a lot of computers is Comodo Firewall Pro. Instructions for configuring are in the forum.

actually i've had zonealarm off now and still the same problem.

i'm just running pg2 and nod for obvious reasons.

i've also done almost everything in Ultima's Troubleshooting Guide.

right now the network indicates a green check mark.

12 active torrents, only 2 working downloads (blue), 10 seeding torrents (red) closed or offline.

private tracker status showing unconnectable.

opened the openoffice torrent. it went well.

peeked at 413kB/s, took less than about 6 min, and tracker closed after dl.

tried it again to see the tracker status during the dl, and it just kept updating...

status remained closed and speed slowly increased but didn't peek as fast

(stopped it after 6min, 40kB/s). manual update didn't help.

so i restarted utorrent again and bam...

'everythings gone green'

so its got something to do with the client.

the only thing i can think of is that some update somewhere screwed me up.

could it have been sp3 or a zonealarm update?

right now i'm thinking of a total clean install of sp2 and no updates.

getting desperate...

any other suggestions before i do that.

Furthermore, NOD32 2.7 has something called IMON, which can also act as a firewall (and in some cases, corrupts HTTP requests, resulting in HTTP 400). But that can actually be disabled without uninstalling NOD32.

i got to thank you guys in advance before i forget...

thx.

yeah, i did uninstall zone alarm and,the did the nod 2.7 imon thing from the troubleshooting guide.

still the same.

woke up this morning... all red

restarted utorrent... green.

speeds are also very slow. uploads hover below 20kB/s.

dls... bouncing up and down. never consistent.

btw i use a separate computer for torrents and have no problems accessing the internet from there.

willing to try anything now before i do a clean install of windows.

gonna pick me up a new hd first.

yup...

did those and the direct modem too.

the same...

the only thing that does help and, its only temporary, is restarting the client.

now i need to find out how to save my stats before i reinstall windows.

(i guess thats another thread).

Same thing has been happening to me. Utorrent can't update the tracker and the arrows go red. Tried all the things in the troubleshooting posts. Office torrents go red also. After tracker goes red everything works OK. Speed is fine. Tracker is just not updated. Have lost probably 5 gigs or more on my upload ratios. After closing and restarting utorrent everything is fine. I used to think it was just a tracker site problem, but it's not.

I've been using utorrent for more than 2 years and never noticed a problem until recently. I always upgrade when a new version comes out. Got tired of trackers going red so I tried earlier versions. 1.7.1 does the same thing. I've been running 1.6 for almost 2 days straight with no tracker problems.

One thing I did notice after I had 1.8 running for quite a while before the trackers went red. I stopped the torrents by clicking the stop button, then started them again. In the status line or whatever it said something like it couldn't connent to the tracker because the socket was full. Not sure of the exact wording, but it was something similar to that. Wish I would have taken a sceenshot of it now. Tried duplicating it again to get the exact wording, but it didn't give any error message this time. The difference was the second time the trackers went red after about a half an hour and the first time they went red after a much longer period of time.

I know we aren't the only ones having this problem. I've read other posts from people with the same problem. Tweaking this and tweaking that doesn't help. Version 1.6 updates the trackers fine. Versions 1.7 and 1.8 don't.

Hope this helps a little. Just wanted to let you know I've been having the same problem also. I will be using version 1.6 until this gets fixed. Thanks.

Until told exactly what your connection is speed-wise both down and up...AND told what settings you're using in uTorrent, I'm just going to assume bad settings in uTorrent are causing your problems. :P

I've been having what appears to be the same problem. I'm seeding a number of torrents which all come from the same private site. When I leave utorrent to seed for a while, I usually come back to find all of my seeds are showing the red upload arrow and the tracker status says "offline (timed out)". A quick restart usually fixes the problem, but that screws my ratio. A few minutes ago I watched the tracker try to update and found that they timed out during the update. I hope that adds some help...

My settings from the speed guide are for 1 mbit/sec. DHT is disabled. I use PG2 and have other firewalls disabled. I have a Linksys WRT54G and use Comcast as my provider... I've been through the WRT54G fixes and I know Comcast can be a pain. I doubt it's the router or comcast though because right clicking a torrent (pre-1.8) and selecting update tracker worked, whereas the auto-update seemed to be where things fell apart.

Got the responses I figured I would. Problem must be my settings or my firewall or my router, can't be the program.

Why does version 1.6 work fine and versions 1.7 and 1.8 don't?

I'm using the stock security program that comes with XP. Tried it without it on and it does the same thing.

My connection speed is 1.5 mbps down and 768 kbps up.

I'm using the pretty much the stock settings that come with the program. Global max connections 750, max number per torrent 100, number of slots per torrent 8. Tried changing the global max to 250 no help. Tried changing the max half open from 8 to 4 no help. DHT is disabled. IP resolving is disabled. UPnP and NAT-PMP is disabled. Peer resolving country is false. Green checkmark at bottom of the screen, port forwarding is working OK. Max active torrents 9. Max active downloads 8.

When i use version 1.6 it gets all the settings I used from 1.8. Why does 1.6 work just fine with those settings and version 1.8 doesn't? I have uploaded over 13G so far with 1.6 and no tracker problems.

Well, software firewalls on Windows (save for the built-in one) tend to block new

versions of the app until you recreate any and all firewall rules for them.

And try choosing xx/512k from the Speed Guide.
