Update question

If I update to 1.8 how does this affect my torrents that are downloading and are seeding... in other words ..will I lose them ???

As long as you're upgrading (instead of going from v1.8 to v1.6...), you have almost nothing to worry about as far as your files are concerned.

Just make sure uTorrent v1.7 is CLOSED and stopped before running v1.8.
