RSS downloader - issues list (also Features & possibly some Bugs)

Recommended Posts

Here is a copy of a list of mine, summing the issues I can remenbered/see in the current RSS implementation . It includes both features and bugs.
I hope a more-integrated-GUI will result from that. Random thoughts (nice-to-have…) are here too.
In [] I notes – B/F – for Bugs/Features and 1-3 for priorities, 1 – being the highest.

Comments will be nice ...

1. Parsing issue with multiple episodes' names like S04E13E14 http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=332104#p332104 (1) [very rare, B3]
2. Opening RSS URL in browser after/while downloading " (2) [useful, removed, F1]
3. Mark Episodes (re-instate) with the following two icons (instead/in-addition to the RSS icon) – latest-24-hours (clock icon) , and favorites (V icon) This is now reflected only in the "?" button per-favorite, and will help a lot! You can also make a new column for it, so people can sort by it… [very useful, removed, F1]
4. History list – be able to find a record by inputting the first letter (like in the releases) or maybe use filter box [nice to have, F3]
5. History list – enhance it with more info (URLs etc) and be able to "open in browser" [useful, F2]
6. Logging/status – try to have less "spam" there. Repeated notifications – should be limited . I suggest add an option for that. If it's possible to track them, I suggest to stop after X times (only the logging) , and renew after the first successful scan (good for timeouts). [nice to have, F2]
7. Logging/status – reflect timeouts in the RSS feed's icon (like keep showing the first icon w/o the "))" and color it red http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=345200#p345200 [useful, F1] You can also reflect "unable to load" condition with the same red icon near a release in the releases view itself [nice-to-have,F3]
8. Add sample feed(s) to promote the issue… http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=332299#p332299 [nice-to-have,F3]
9. GUI–integration – re-instate the RSS button for opening releases dialog. Use the same button for feed's edit if you like, by (for example) double-click or one click on it, or shift-click http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=338817#p338817 [needed, removed, F1]
10. Auto show cat list if feeds are defined http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=347678#p347678 – check if this still works ..[b1]
11. Fix the bug of remembering scroll position in the releases views http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=343983#p343983 [b3] but also relate to a feature of remembering the (approximate) position in the scroll AFTER a new RSS scan . This way you can, for example, position the view around the letter "s" , and see the new "stargate…" releases pop up … [F2]
12. Verify that the RSS "added on" time is really the ADDED on time. If you changed this to "published time" – add a new column for it http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=330109#p330109 [useful, B1]
13. Remember the last selection/position in RSS fav/history http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=327770#p327770 [F3]
14. Add "good news" RSS events to the logger (=downloads) [nice-to-have, F2]
15. After disabling a feed, the "update-all" still shows it's episodes http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=327280#p327280 [b2]
16. GUI–integration – double click a feed (cat) will open its edit box [nice to have, F3]
17. GUI – sorting (bug?) – sorted column mark (arrow/shade) in RSS view is not kept between sessions (an old discussion… same for the regular view) http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=348736#p348736 [try hard to find a solution, like M$ did… F1/B1]
18. GUI-integration (my thoughts, on how to completely re-integrate your new design…) – split the "feeds" category-pane to two tabs (!) – "feeds"/"favorites". Similar to feeds, Favorites will also have "all" and individual items/icons. Icons – new ones, or RSS like, possibly showing the same "v" icon if filter result is positive. [Most wanted…, F1]
The possible actions on them will be:
a. click-select - show the releases (now also marked with "v". like the "?" button)
b. double-click – open the old style edit dialog for one, and if "all" – for all, as now.
c. Sorting possible, with drag & drop (like today!) Also for feeds!
d. Right-click options: edit/add/delete/disable/enable
e. (optional) have a "history" category for them, and change the list view to show it in the list view (or just double-click to open it).
Note: selection of RSS cat view (feeds/favs) by Radio Buttons is possible too, or even an extra lower-pane-tab for favs, so feeds+FAVs+releases can be seen together...

edit:
19. When doing right-click->add to vaforite on a release - it should select/focus on the newly added release and show it's own dialog-fields for editing [b2]
20. Add RSS feed & edit feed - pop up multiple dialogs when pressed more then once [b3]
21. With a long - scrollable feeds' list - after a lower feed is selected & viewed in the main view - next run of uTorrent will keep the selection, but will nit auto-scroll so you can see it. [b3]
22. Trying to set RSS interval (rss.update_interval) to a high number (201234/2000/200/60) results in a 10 min interval ... seems that it just might not be not wroking at all ? [b1]
23. Pop up with "add feed " dialog when double clicking "all feeds". This will enable pop-up favorites again for the RSS button click .
24. Showing the "descritpion" in the viewer http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=368421#p368421
25. Being able to control if to DL private torrents http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=368421#p368421[F3]
25a. Be able to create post-processing/filter/rules related to internal torrent data [F1]
26. Auto add label for torrents DLed from feed (auto & manual) - using the feed name or some user defined string composed from it as a parameter http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=45096[F3]
27. Use also a global filter for for favorites http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=52232[F3]
28. Improved smart episodes filter - prioritize by resolution (with stopping option to the previous/lower one) http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=52232[F2]
29. Make it possible to define multiple feeds per filter and not just single one or all (like in formats) [F2]

edit2:
30. http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=62951 - enable update feed for disabled ones[b2]
31. Deleted...
32. Support parsing of episodes with "date" anotation-format and not SxEy (by GTHK) [F3]

edit3:
33. A simple RSS reader - Enable viewing of only the active RSS releases/favorites in feed(s), w/o any history/completed downloads. [F1]
34. Add the option to define a per-feed interval and days for the RSS scan. [F3]
35. Cancel the label control in advanced rss.feed_as_default_label, and make a checkbox near the "label" edit box to do that (gray-out the edit box).
36. RSS feed "|" bug http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=75400 [b3]

edit4:
37. Add Pt I/II/III notation to the smart Ep filter -> http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=93414 [F2]
37a. Add "WEB-DL5.1/"WEB-DL/WEB-DL2.0" to the formats' list/options http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=70126 [F1]

edit5:
38. Add improved scheduling by "Day of the week". The scanning will start at a specific day of the week, regardless of the time you edit-in your TV show http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=95520 [F1]
39. Save scanning operation: use the local PC time and scan ONLY if there are any favorite scheduled to search for atm. [F1]
40. RSS does not comply to "minimal interval" (maybe due to errors in feeds time stamps?). http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=95562 [b3]
41. User definable episodes' format . Like <text1>"X"<text2>["Y"] e.e - "1"of8-"8"of8
or pt*|part*"1"-pt*"8"|part*"8"
example: BBC.Human.Planet.1of8.Oceans.HDTV.x264.AC3.MVGroup.org.mkv [F3]

edit6 (17-may-2011):
42. A user cannot define a reasonable relative Download Path for favorite . It is referencing the install directory, instead of the user defined default download directory . Better yet - make the root a separate user-definable setting. http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=678360#p678360[b2/F2]
43. Make it possible to use system environment variable %xxxx% as a download path definition (or part of it) [F3]

44. Option to make none-RSS downloads use the RSS filers/rules as the destination folder. http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=601866#p601866 [F1]

edit7 (20-Aug-2011):

45. Make it possible to re-size the left favorites column width [F2]

46. Make it possible to sort the left favorites column by favorite name [F2]

47. Make it possible to import favorite (rss.dat formated file?) or export selected favorites into an rss.dat like file

edit8 (24-Dec-2011):

48. RSS data is not being saved for new "added" favorite, unless you specifically click it (left pane) first [b1]

49. uTorrent does not support 3 digits' episode #s http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=109982 [b2]

edit9 (1-Jul-2012):
50. RSS downloader: When you are not using alias, a feed name that includes "|" screws up uTorrent URL parser. Internally in the rss.dat file you see two "|" being used :(http://www.imagebam.com/image/d835b8199491943 http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=663594#p663594 (see also 36 above) [b3]
51. Anime episodes are not being detected by the smart filter (<name> <number>, w/o a season #) [F2]

edit10 (29-Oct-2013):
52. RSS matcher fails for episodes > 100 http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=142810 [b2]

edit10 (4-Apr-2014):
53. Add a "favorite" column in RSS history tab, so that it will be easy for the user to know what filter was activated per any history/downloaded line! [F2]

I like it!

Another feature (not technically in the utorrent.exe though)

Why not add a new RSS subforum.

First sticky could be one giving users (new to RSS) some examples of what can be done with filters. I suspect that to the everyday user, RSS has always been to "complicated" (aka steep learning curve?)

Example:

First add your 10 favorite RSS feeds, create a filter like

Filename *.*

Episode 1x01-02

Match always

I would be happy to contribute to such a subforum, and it just might be all that is

needed for RSS usage to take off.

Keep the ideas coming Rafi, the more I read, the more I like it :-)

Cheers,

/R

from IRC:

[18:13] <_rafi_> what do you think about this idea for a new RSS related section in the forum ? http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=352704#p352704

[18:16] <Ultima> I don't think t really warrants a whole new subforum. if need be, he can always create some "RSS Info" thread containing what he thinks would be helpful to users, and we could maybe stickify it if it is indeed helpful

[18:17] <Ultima> ^ IMHO

want to write something helpfull, and they'll stick it ? If you were not on 1.7.7 I would say - revise the RSS guide to 1.8.1 ...

It makes sense but for feeds that are dedicated to specific shows. On other feeds that publish all shows - it's not really needed. BTW, as far as I can remember - the old interface did support interval per feed. also the different time zone of the show and the user can make it difficult . but... I'll add it to my list...

OK rafi you asked for it.... here it goes and I went quickly through the many ones you have and I think these are not in there but up to you, you are the expert here. :/

with a bit more detail

1. make rss filter window less "modal" so that you can resize the left column width in the favorites tab (this has been bugging me for a VERY long time...)

2.search and replace - for example I have all my titles in the favorite left column with a suffix of "720p" and would like to take it off without having to edit each and every one...

3.Sorting - be able to sort the titles in the favorite left column

4. Import/export. Be able to export the RSS list and filters and import it in another PC etc... without messy copy of files.

This would be especially awesome for automation when u want to know when the file is completed and put in the directory only THEN. Perhaps have the default download directory remain for these filtered/rss downloaded torrents, and have a checkbox "move when completed to xxxx directory " per filter.

I'm all for the display of a sorted list of RSS/favorite downloads, the current implementation is so messy, and it's easy to miss if you have multiple requests for the same file. So an alpha sort would be great.

Additionally I would like an option to show when (if) the rule has ever been actioned - I know that I must have many entries in my list for old or outdated items and the ability to make them 'inactive' or to delete them would be of great use.

I am also in favour of being able to save on completion to a specific location - i download many items which i have to copy & paste at a later date, instead of the system automatically doing it - even if it were save a copy to.... in addition to saving the file to it's normal download location - that would remedy any seeding issues which may occur

Thanks

It is sortable, sort of... you can drag & drop items in the favorite list up and down. So we can use this till someone will be so kind to even look at the RSS much needed improvements :(

51. Anime episodes are not being detected by the smart filter (<name> <number>, w/o a season #)

A workaround for this is to use my Anime RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/anime-rss-atom-feeds?format=xml

This aggregates torrent links from NyaaTorrents, Animesuki and anime links from KickassTorrents and reformats the titles to use SxE format. Where I can't determine the season automatically I've got a set of overrides to force the season e.g.

"Toaru Kagaku No Railgun 01" -> "Toaru Kagaku No Railgun 1x01"

"Toaru Kagaku No Railgun S 01" -> "Toaru Kagaku No Railgun S 2x01"

It handles episode ranges and discontiguous episodes as well (e.g. for batch releases) and also normalises various formats e.g. "10-bit", "Hi10P" and "10bit" are all normalised to "10bit" to make matching easier.
