Just wondering...

is it bad manners if i deliberately restrict upload speeds on torrents just to download them faster. Don't get me wrong, i restore the "unlimited" upload speeds once I'm completed and seed the torrent to at least get it to 1.0. But i was wondering if this is an acceptable practice. if it isn't than i'll stop it at once, but i just want to know if I'm cheating the system or what I'm doing is bad for the community?

;) sure thing. If you have other questions there's several guides already made about bittorrent on this and other sites ( http://utorrent.com/guides.php and http://dessent.net/btfaq/#what come to mind) and of course there's the manual which Ultima compiled for uTorrent (Press F1 from within uTorrent 1.8) for a description of all the uT GUI elements and some Q&A about various topics.

It's "stupid" because it can mean you take many times longer to download the torrent than it would otherwise. Other peers reward who upload fast(er) to them. Admittedly, they can only upload as fast as they allow too...but often a peer that wasn't uploading to you at all may upload 4x as much back as you give them.

Just as it is bad to set upload too low, setting it too high for your connection isn't good either...it hurts your download speed, actually reduces upload speed from real max, and can make web surfing slow to impossible. That's why it pays to know what your connection is capable of, both down and up!

2nd link in my signature gives uTorrent settings based on upload bandwidth max (found by speed tests).
