G2Shooter
Just moved into an apartment building and I cannot torrent anymore. I am using utorrent 1.8. I tried tweaking the settings, made sure my port was forwarded correctly, ran the speed test again, etc. to no avail. The torrents never even begin to download. To make sure I was not downloading a private torrent, I downloaded the test file of Open Office that the guide on this site suggests, and the same thing happened, the torrent did not work. On the tracker tab, local peer discovery and peer exchange are listed as working, but the DHT says "waiting for announce..." I don't think the problem is firewall, b/c utorrent worked at home. The only security software I could think of that is blocking it would be spybot, but I don't think so. Any ideas on what the problem is? Thanks for you time and help. DreadWingKnight
What status do you have for the tracker?
G2Shooter
I get a red arrow down--so the guide says this means the torrent is downloading(its not), but there is a tracker error.

G2Shooter
I have multiple trackers, that range from "connection closed by peer," to "offline (timed out)," to "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it," to "Failure Invalid Passkey," also on another torrent I have, DHT/Local Peer/Peer Exchange are listed as "not allowed." Hope this is what you need. Thanks.
DreadWingKnight
What internet security software do you have installed?
G2Shooter
mcafee, lavasoft adware, spybot search and destroy
thelittlefire
Well, what does http://slackware.com/torrents/ torrent say when you do the same thing?
DreadWingKnight
I downloaded the test file of Open Office that the guide on this site suggests, and the same thing happened, the torrent did not work. But as for you having mcafee, you will need to remove and re-create rules in it for uT, as rules in such software are often version-specific. G2Shooter
ok i deleted and redid the rule in macfee allowing utorrent full access. When I download the slackware torrent, DHT is listed as "waiting for announce" Peer Discovery and Peer Exchange are listed as "working" and the tracker is listed as "connection closed by peer." Ultima
"connection closed by peer" indicates that something between you and the tracker is blocking/terminating the connection. Whoever owns the internet connection doesn't want you contacting trackers -- AKA BitTorrent is not allowed on your network.
G2Shooter
so if bitTorrent is not allowed on my network, is there anything I can to do so I can download torrents?
Ultima
Not really, as they're blocking a particularly weak spot in BitTorrent -- tracker communcation.Edit: Apologies, as has been mentioned a VPN or proxy may get around it, but I too have never used a VPN or proxy, so I wouldn't really know. thelittlefire
... sorry to burst your bubble but you may still be able to get torrents IF you can get DHT to bootstrap, and then IF you can get ahold of torrents through MAGNET: URI. Switeck
If DHT won't bootstrap, the trackers might still be accessible through a proxy or VPN.
G2Shooter
what is bootstrap and how do I do that? what is MAGNET: URI?Switeck how can I use a proxy or VPN to access trackers?

G2Shooter
so i guess the only way to torrent is to go to a place with free wifi like starbucks or something?
Switeck
Sure, that's something to try.
G2Shooter
i was messing around with some settings, and I limited the number of incoming connections and limited the upload speed, and now the torrent works, although at a very very slow speed (6 kb/s). Thought I would post this for anyone else who has a similar problem to mine.hopefully this isnt some mess up in the network and I can continue to torrent. thelittlefire
How did you limit it? Do you see http://utorrent.com/faq.php#What_does_Download_Limited_in_the_status_bar_mean.3F ?Switeck's #1 link is the SOP for troubleshooting, and it mentions that step as well as turning off extra features.
