UPnP: Could not map UPnP Port on this pass, retrying.

Hello everyone,

I am using utorrent version 1.8 (built 11813), Windows XP SP3 and for the purposes of solving this problem I have disabled my antivirus (Eset NOD32 3.0.566.0) and peerguardian. Also, I don't have any software firewalls and I have used TCP/IP patch to patch my system to 100 half-open connections. My router is a Livebox (firmware version v5.10.7-uk). My ISP is Orange in the UK and my connection speed is D: 8128kbps, U: 448kbps.

I had set utorrent to use UPnP to forward ports automatically and everything used to work fine until I decided to start using version 1.8 (I was using version 1.6 before that). More specifically, I have selected the following on utorrent:

Enable UPnP port mapping: YES

Enable NAT-PMP port mapping: YES

Randomize port each start: YES

Add Windows Firewall exception: YES

...it goes without saying that UPnP is enabled in my router's configuration! (i.e. I am no idiot)

When I run utorrent I get the following in my log:

...I check my router's "UPnP router table" and no ports have been opened by UPnP (well, I could figure that from the log, too). I have tried connecting my laptop to different routers but I get the same thing! I have even tried setting "net.upnp_tcp_only=true" as suggested in some other threads, just in case this were a problem with my router but it hasn't changed anything. When I check through uTorrent Port Checker, to see if the port is open, it says:

"Error! Port 27878 does not appear to be open."

Despite all that, some times (but not always), utorrent's status bar has a green tick, saying "Network OK", "Your network connection is working like it should." and I am able to download and upload at full speeds with no port forwarding!!!

This doesn't make any sense... why doesn't this newer version of utorrent register its port forwards properly in the "UPnP router table"? I am reminding everyone that all these problems started the moment I upgraded to version 1.8. I am beginning to regret doing that... 1.6 was a lot more stable for me! There's these fancy ipv6 stuff, but the basics have broken down! I really hope someone can help me out.

PS: Oh and please don't ask me to manually forward the ports to a static IP (I've seen this a lot in previous threads). I really hate it when people suggest that... it's not a solution. UPnP was implemented in utorrent for a reason, so that people use it, not to keep it broken and tell everyone to forward their ports another way! I move my laptop to many different places and I can't possibly set up port forwarding on all these routers.

I am using the latest version of firmware on my router... regardless of that, however, I am telling you that I have tried connecting my laptop to other routers and I have the same problems! Moreover, all of these problems started the moment I installed version 1.8! I was using version 1.6 minutes before installing 1.8 and everything was working perfectly!

Any other ideas?

--- Edit: (since double posts are not allowed) ---

Problem solved! ...I am writing down all my findings; perhaps someone might find them useful in the future. When you close utorrent (right-click on the system tray icon and exit), ports forwarded via upnp are not always released properly (they are not removed from the "UPnP router table". This is a *bug* by the way that should be fixed on some future version. When there are too many such entries, I have found that my router's performance drops dramatically (they sort of clog it down). I occasionally remove these entries manually, when utorrent is not running, to un-clog my system. Apparently, if you do this a few times, the router freaks out and doesn't work with utorrent 1.8's implementation of UPnP. Do not ask me why... I have no idea! Restarting the router will not work. The only thing that will work is to disable UPnP support on the router and re-enable it. I repeat that this is for the Lifebox and that I have been using the latest available firmware (v5.10.7-uk).

OK... so, now, the only thing that remains is for the UPnP address release bug to be resolved by a developer!
